Title: rebarrel average cost?
Post by: bankwalker on January 21, 2010, 06:11:14 PM: can any of you guys give me a ballpark figure on the average cost for a rebarrel? ill have the barrel already, and it will be on a mauser action if that makes any sort of difference.

i have emailed a couple local gunsmiths but no replies. and i got a good deal coming up ona barrel for my rifle. but dont wanna jump on it unless i know i can afford to have to put on the action.

Post by: b23 on January 22, 2010, 12:47:52 PM: Just a straight rebarrel no trueing or anything else would probably be in the $700-1000 range including a new barrel depending on the smith. Most good quality barrels are about $350 you could subtract that from that $700-1000.

Give Russ Haydon (253-857-7557) of Russ Haydon's Shooters Supply in Gig Harbor a call. Russ is a extremely nice guy and is ALWAYS more than willing to help a fellow shooter out. If Russ doesn't have what your looking for he will either get it for you or find out who or where to get it.

If you've got the barrel and it's for your mauser and you're not asking for any other work to be done.

Any smith that charges more than $150 would not be the one I'd go to.

You obviously haven't had many rifles rebarreled. Are you are aware new barrels come as blanks and there is a far amount of machining involved????

you will still need to have it set back and headspaced.

If B23 is paying that much, ($700-1000 for a straight barrel swap), I hope he's building rifles that will shoot the the toilet paper out of the hand of a knat at 1,000yds. Last time I checked, most gun smiths aren't getting rich quick.

i like that price. and have had a couple rebarreled rifles with shaw barrels and really like the performance out of the rifles.

Post by: b23 on January 24, 2010, 11:19:12 PM: If you all are getting it done that cheaply for the barrel, blueprinting of the action, chambering and final fitting by all means send all your work to them because that indeed is dang cheap. I'm not sure how they can when all the good barrels cost atleast $300+ just for a barrel blank.

Post by: AWS on January 25, 2010, 09:18:03 AM: Right now Pac-Nor is charging $580 for a complete barrel instalation including Supermatch SS barrel(standard contours), truing action and lapping lugs. They only install their own barrels though.

I had my Rem 600 rebarreled (6x45mm) by them a few years back and it is a tack driver.

I bought a 6x47mm barrel from Shaw and rechamberred it to 6mm/204 and it is a great shooter also.
