Just curious who all from the site is putting in for montana deer, elk, or any drawings this year? Specify what your putting in for Deer, elk, Antelope, Etc. I'm pretty sure i am for deer and antelope but not 100% yet. Good luck in the drawings this year guys.

Deer and antelope

Not this year. Wyoming Oregon and Idaho. Hopefully I can draw something. Points are starting to add up in Oregon and Wyoming..
-
Dear/Elk combo and Sheep, ...thinking about antelope, but that season ends earlier than when we like to go.... but holy crap were there a ton of speedgoats where we hunted last year!
-
Try for the deer/elk combo.. I have 6 points for a elk special permit. I might draw some year.
-
Deer and Elk for me.
-
Due to price increase, don't you have to win the lottery first?

Is that a done deal for 2010? I knew there was a petition or an initiative or something... did it pass for sure?

I dont think it has yet, I just got my stuff in the mail and it looks like it is still the same price. but like anything else that could be subject to change

Deer/ Elk Combo.. I would like to put in for antelope, but Im getting married in Sept.. So I dont know if I'll have extra money..
-
deer/elk combo - if not drawn probably spend my money idaho unless I draw in WA
-
Deer elk Sheep Hunting paradise valley near liveingston private ranch. it will be are first time hunting MT :) hope to get a big buck
-
Deer. Have one point just want another point for next year. They don't have ghost points. If I draw its a DIY around Broadus or returning to Fort Peck area.
-
deer and antelope for me. probably only going to draw antelope though, since I drew deer last year.
-
Trying for Deer and Antelope...hopefully I get one or both

Do you have any preference points for deer?
-
No preference points, unfortunately...but who knows...I'm not picky, and to be honest, its my first year trying for out of state hunts. I'm in it for fun and trying to shoot a second deer, not trying for some of the "hot" areas just a second buck.
-
Ill apply for antelope, Sheep, Goat, Moose
50% odds Ill apply for deer

I drew the Deer A Combo last year with no points, so you're right, it could happen. But to be honest, that was a fluke. You have about an 18% chance of being drawn your first year applying. The antelope draw odds go by unit. Take the draw odds published on MT FWP website and figure your chances of being drawn are about 40% of what is published (the number published is the draw odds for resident and non-resident combined, I think). I put in for 3 areas for antelope last year that had draw odds in the 80-90% range, and I didn't draw. But, I have a point this year, so if I put in for similar areas, I expect to draw this year.
Had a great mule deer hunt last year, by the way.

Seriously, Thank you for the advice. I have a friend that goes to MT every year for everything from Deer to upland birds. He draws either deer, elk, or antelope nearly every year. I am putting in for multiple areas like you had said, and to be honest, if I draw: GREAT, if not...that just means more time to prepare for Washington Mulies! I have not shot a big mulie, and never a whitey, so I'm just hoping for an opportunity at a buck

Last year was my first out of state hunt. I drew Montana Deer A Combo. The hunt was fantastic. My buddy and I both ended up tagging average 4x4 muleys, so no spectacular bucks, but we had a great time and saw tons of bucks.
BTW, for those of you wondering about the prices, I just got my apps in the mail yesterday, and the prices (right now) are the same as last year, so I am sending my stuff in just as quick as I can get a stamp on it, just in case they raise the prices this spring.
GUScottie, if your buddy draws a deer tag every other year as a non-resident, he is probably putting in for the Deer/elk Combo license. If you buy the extra point, you have about a 50% chance of being drawn, but it costs quite a bit more than just the Deer A combo ($643 for Deer/Elk as opposed to $343 for just deer).
I don't put in for both, since I wouldn't have time to hunt both deer and elk properly and make it worth it, but some guys do because it gives them better odds, and they don't mind the extra cost to deer hunt in MT, then they just eat the elk tag. I DO mind the extra cost, so I just take my chances.
Here's a pic of my buddy Tom and I with our MT Deer. We saw bucks like this fairly regularly.

Wish I could... Have looked into it a lot.... I'd do the deer/elk combo and plan for a multi hunt.... Maybe in a few years when my son gets older....
-
Got my applications in the mail thinking about putting in for elk and deer and not wasting my money to hunt in Washington this year.

Not a bad line of thought if you ask me. If PathfinderJR were another year older, we might not be messin' with WA this year either (unless we drew something good).

Thats my thought I have a lot of points built up and really wanna get drawn but the amount of people is ridiculous so I can save lots of money to hunt somewhere that has more animals.
-
Deer, antelope, moose, sheep, Wyoming for deer, antelope, elk point, Utah deer and a group of 5 of will be going to Colorado for deer with 10 points. :IBCOOL:
-
Will have a MT deer tag this year w/ two points. Going to try archery in the nice early Sept. weather 8).
The -12 BS got old in a hurry last time we were over for Thanksgiving.
-
Deer combo, antelope
-
Deer/Elk Combo, hopefully draw this year since we didn't last year and have a point fo rthe combo. Had had great luck of getting every other year until last year. Also applied in Arizona, points in Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Oregon(unless we don't draw Montana then e will apply in OR) Points in Washington but hunt general season westside.
-
Deer/Elk combo. Points only.
-
Deer/Elk combo. Points only.
Can't do points only in MT unless it's something new this year.

I don't see that option either. The only way I know of to garner points in MT is to give them a $643 loan for a few months... :dunno:

Yep And if you only want points then hope you don't draw.
-
Landowner Sponsor Deer and maybe a little Turkey. Have yet to hunt elk there.
Had pretty good results with the Landowner tag. Usually 3 out of 4 years get drawn.. Used to basically guaranteed 10-15 years ago. It's odd because there is the same amount of land in the state but the odds have gone down?? Must be more landowners involved in the program thus changing the numbers..
No matter what I'll be over there even with a Doe tag or two. The fishing, bird hunting, coyote shooting, and turkey hunting are to good to miss on my family's ranch.

Actually, if you only want points, put in for the Deer A Combo. I think last year the odds were better than average, but they were still only barely above 20%. Deer/elk is a 50% draw rate.

Yup, your correct. Made a comment without double checking. Thanks for the correction.
-
You have the option of retaining your points and returning your tags. If not for a death I believe you lose 20-25% of your money. That makes for a spendy point.
-
Deer and Elk combo. We had the hunt from hell last year.Spent more money on Dr. bills and Vet bills in Dillon than on tags.Things this year are bound to be better.

My app came in the mail today ;)

Wow, 41 so far.
