Title: 22-250 loads
Post by: turkey buster on January 23, 2010, 09:05:55 AM: I am going to start loading for my 22-250 but not sure what kinda powder to start with, I am going to be predator hunting yotes/bob cats hopefully I will be loading with ballistic tips not sure what grain bullets yet, so any help would be great

If it's a Remmy it will be a 1-14 and that will limit you on bullet weight. Not really a bad thing unless you're looking to shoot past 600yds.

If you could be a bit more specific it will help you get more specific answers tailored more to your needs.

I used a lot of 40's as well and they worked great but if you hit bone they can be quite messy. I shot an 18 lb bobcat in the chest at 180 yards that did no damage at all to the hide. Shot many coyotes without to many problems. Nothing is absolute though when it comes to that round other than the fact that it puts them to sleep very nicely.

I'm not sure what twist it is, it was a gift from my brother in law, all I really know is it is a custom, mouser action that the father in law had built back in the early 70's,

I havn't been able to go hunting with it much but pigeons at a hundred yards just disappear. I have killed dawgs with other guns using the v-max and it is a great varmint bullet.

You got it. Makes measuring the twist easy huh? Kind of a cool trick. That 250 is just awesome, I was sighted in 1.5" high and could hold dead on out to 340 with the 40 grain blitzking load I was using. i don't have the data any more but basically just a maxed out load from the book. I actually did use a lot of powders but Varget seems like it was the one I used most often. I'll look through my old books and see if I have any notes about old loads.

Post by: MtnMuley on January 23, 2010, 03:13:54 PM: Good powder replies. :) I would recommend using 40 grain v-max bullets if you plan on saving the hides.......especially bobcats. If you're not concerned about hides on the yotes, the 55 gr. v-max is nearly unbeatable. :twocents:

Post by: Jamieb on January 23, 2010, 10:49:39 PM: I shot 55 gr. V-max's for a while but I hated those little tiny flat base bullets. The BT's of the 50 will stand up in the case mouth when seating, you dont have to hold them strait, pinching your fingers. I played around with a bunch of powders and the best with the 50's was H-380 and RL-15. H-380 burns pretty dirty so I went with RL-15. As far as being fur friendly, stay away from major bone and the 50's put a small hole in and most of the time dont exit. They'll make a gross mess if you head shoot a yote.

Post by: Red Dawg on January 24, 2010, 07:49:50 AM: I have noticed h-380 being a dirty powder myself. I haven't had much trouble with the flat bullets in the 22-250. I had a heck a time with them in my hornet but yes boat tails are much more user friendly.

Very accurate through my 22-250 ruger. Deadly on coyotes, to the point I have never had a runner, all have dropped dead in their tracks.
