I am looking to get more serious on elk hunting this year and was wondering if anyone had a good book to read on elk hunting?  Let me know.  Thanks

Mike Eastman's 'Elk Hunting the West' is pretty good -- but it is more rocky mtn oriented.  Not sure that any of them have any great secrets for people that have been elk hunting for years though.

I have not been hunting them for years so that may work..  I have only hunted them a couple years in Eastern WA but this year will be in Idaho so want to take it a little more serious since the chances of getting one is a little better.  Thanks

Cameron Hanes (spelling?) has some good stuff from what I am told.

				Check out Elknut.

Elknuts book, and info from hunters on this site will get you farther than any one book. Eastman's book is good but it doesn't cover the type of hunting that Washington encompasses with greater hunter numbers and less elk. And sometimes more challenging terrain, ie thick brush and reprod like most of the westside. my 2 cents for what it's worth.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and thanks wapiti hunter2 for the link that is exactly what I was looking for..

How do you plan on hunting them (weapon choice and East or West side).

How do you plan on hunting them (weapon choice and East or West side).
Last year I did East with rifle and actually got into them a couple times.  This year I will be a resident in ID so I will be doing OTC Idaho with rifle this year.  So I am going to have to do some heavy scouting since ID is completely new to me...

Eastman's Hunting the West would probably be better for you.  Elknut's "Playbook" is an awsome source but; you mention that you are a rifle hunter.  The Playbook is 90% about hunting during the rut and how to talk to elk.

I recommend "High Pressure Elk Hunting" by Mike Lapinski; I'm reading it now.
Lapinski recommends the following books:
- Radical Elk Hunting Strategies (Lapinki)
 - Successful Big Game Hunting (Duncan Gilchrist
 - Elk Hunting in the Northern Rockies (Ed Wolff)

Sorry I can't offer anything up as I've been mostly focused on archery hunting. I've read and/or watched several excellent books and videos focused on archery hunting if you are interested.

hart wixom offers the most complete books on the subject, to me anyhow...not many pics, but full of knowledge.

Yes, The PlayBook is designed for Aug. Sept. Oct hunts & really directed more towards the bowhunter that needs to read a situation correctly & have elk close for a shot opportunity! There is no book out there today that has the research that this book has when it comes to sounds & when to use them & why the elk are using them! This info covers nearly 30 years of on hands research on OTC Public Lands with near 150 elk taken by hunters like you & I. All techniques are proven & sounds defined & used are accurate for anyones elk hunt! We are not Outfitters, just passionate elk hunters!

Just ordered the playbook.  I am looking forward to some reading.
Thanks!

The Phantom Ghost of Harriet Lou and Backcountry Bowhunting. Both great books the first has several stories and is written by a former outfitter/guide Roland Cheek.

I just started "The Complete Book of Elk Hunting" by Sam Curtis, a rocky mountain elk foundation book. It's really informative so far, lots of info on rifle hunting Montana type terrain. Covers recognizing habitats, understanding behavior, environmental factors, and planning your hunt.  :twocents:

Thanks for the info I will pick that one up next.  I am almost finished reading Mike Eastman's 'Elk Hunting the West' and it has been very helpful.  Hope to read a couple more before I get out scouting.  Thanks again for everyone's help..

Sorry ElkNut I wasn't trying to dissuade anyone from your book.  I have it and along with your CD's learned more about elk hunting in one day than I have in my entire life.  I just don't think your book would be the best for  him since he's hunting late season elk with a rifle.

Hey, no apology needed! For rifle hunting outside the rut I agree there would be other books that would be a better choice! Thanks!

Mike Eastman's 'Elk Hunting the West' is pretty good -- but it is more rocky mtn oriented.  Not sure that any of them have any great secrets for people that have been elk hunting for years though.
:yeah: Thats the best one I have read. Gives you a state by state break down as well

i would also suggest mike lapinski or elk nuts playbook there is some over the counter idaho rut hunts for rifle where the playbook may come in handy

:yeah:  In my experience, anything by the Eastman's is going to be 1. useful 2.  common sense  3.  Written based off real-world field experience.
