I had a person I met in a sporting goods store tell me that croaking frogs attract turkeys, anybody ever hear of such? He said he could imitate a frog croaking and it works.
-
Turkeys will eat small amphibians so it wouldn't surprise me that much that they would be attracted to the sound ... first time I've heard of someone "croaking" a turkey in though ... seems this would be a last resort. Think he might of been "croaking" you in a bit? :chuckle:
-
why not, must be like a dinner bell..please tell me you guys arent going to go get kermit suits...I have yet to try to call turkeys..really sounds like a blast
-
I suggest the guy you were talking too might wear a tin foil hat at home, or he is getting ready to market frog croakers for an upcoming seminar..............hey, Dancer....you wouldn't be in cahoot's with him would ya. :chuckle:
-
There are times I have been sitting in a blind willing to try anything. I have wondered about cricket noises since they eat the heck out of them and grasshoppers.

Funny you mention crickets. On a southern board I 'm on, there was a guy that in his posts promoted himself as an expert turkey hunter, using crickets in front of his blind to attract turkeys, then bragged on it. Needless to say along with all his other goofy posts he has been banned several times, but keeps returning under different names. As soon as someone on the board figures it out that he might be back with a new name, the cricket jokes start. :chuckle:

My daddy used to call in mallards by makin a noise like an ear of corn so I don't have any problem belivein turkeys would come stuttin into croakin frogs.

Its getting deep. :chuckle:
-
The research that is currently going on for turkey diet..(study needing turkey crops) IS looking at amphibians and the type wild turkeys may eat. Also looking at seed types, etc..It will be very interesting. They are even collecting turkey droppings along with crops hunters send in.
-
Hey, how do I get in on marketing these cricket and ears of corn calls to go with my frog call percentage? :dunno:
:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

yeah,knee deep,knee deep :bdid:

In all seriousness, could he have ment that they will shock gobble to croaking frogs, like a locator call? Not so much come into a croaking noise?
-

In all seriousness?...you have got to be kidding.....gut starting to hurt from laughing....nothing personal, just funny is all. Ribet, Ribet......gobble, gobble :chuckle:
-
Now that I've stopped laughing...to answer your question.........No, I don't think that's what he meant.
-
So turkeys dont shock gobbler to non turkey noise's? Like a coyote howl, crow call or even a pig squealer?
-
Of course they shock gobble to other sounds - however, the guy said that they are "attracted" which, to me, implied that if you started croaking like a frog they would not only gobble, but show up...If I slam the door on my truck I might expect one to gobble but I wouldn't expect it to come running to me. Otherwise, I'd just drive down the road, step out and load the shotgun and then start slamming the door of my truck and pretty soon I'd be on my way home with my turkey.
Or, you can get out and start croaking like a frog. Same effect, I think. I wish I would've thought of both of those things a lot sooner. It would have saved me countless hours and countless $$ walking around in the woods with my expensive calls. :chuckle:
-

What Halflife65 said.................
I might add that's why they call it a shock gobble......it's generally a noise that breaks the silence and is LOUD enough to shock a gobbler into gobbling. I really doubt frogs have that ability to make noises that qualify.
-
I agree, like i said, "could he have ment" it is funny though if he really ment they would come running to the dinner bell croak..
I also stated shock gobble and not come a runnin...
Although turkeys do some strange stuff..
-

If you throw in a yelp or a cutt in between croaking helps. :chuckle:
-
This all sounds funny about croaking. The fellow I talked to, gave me the impression if he had a group of turkeys in front of him, and they wouldn't come closer. He would imitate a tree frog. He claimed they love to eat them and some of the birds would come looking for the frog. Where the hens go the gobbler often follows. I didn't get to ask him if it was a spring or fall hunt,as I had to leave.
Kind of like going to a mouse squeak, after calling a coyote in with a predator call.
-
I just bought a new call for my turkey vest based on the new info provided. I'll have my turkey by opening morning now...LOL
The "Croaker" is the ultimate in making that gobbler hungry!
-
That goes nicely with my new decoy!
-

-
Make fun all you want, but you know at least one of us is going to try it just to see, if nothing else is working. :chuckle:
-
I took my wife to the doctor today and was talking with a LPN that is a avid archer. I ask him if he was getting ready for turkey season and he brightened up. I ask what kind of call he used, he replied you aren't going to believe this, but my best call is a frog croak. He said they are crazy for frogs. He got a toy out of a store that as he described it, was a can like devise that you flipped over and it made a frog croak. He said one of his kids will start using it and the turkeys are so focused on it he is off to the side and can draw his bow with out being seen.
This is the second person who has told me about frog croaks attracting turkeys. Both also said the tree frog croak.
-
You need to find an amphibian free zone over there and clear your head..LOL..or you will have me even convinced to actually do a croak. A funny story..went out with a guide and we were locating toms..he says "Lets listen here"...he breaks out his coyote call..Hoooowll..Gobble Gobble Gobble..Right on..He says..They love this thing. I go watch this..Hoo Hoo Hoo..Gobble Gobble Gobble , I go watch this ..MOO MOO MOO..Gobble Gobble Gobble..I also did the famous door slam or dog bark..gobble gobble..He just looked at me shaking his head. It was funny. But to sit by a tree and croak in hopes to lure in a hungry turkey?..not sure the sad part is I will try anything..LOL..well not anything..but most within reason..LOL
-
I put this out, after being told about it, and thought it seemed ridicule's. I thought all the comments were funny, but it got me to thinking that possibly some truth to it. After the second person, I am thinking of keeping my eye open for some thing that will make a real frog sound, to try when I get a flock of birds, or a henned up gobbler will not come in. I am not going to put much emphasis on it, but will be observant to see if it could be one more little tool. I still like my homemade calls.
-
I am going to try it on my small resident flock that passes through my meadow from time to time just to see there reaction, i have lots of hoppers in the summer but i also have a small pond (1ac) that gets overgrown and is full of frogs, the turkeys do stay on that side of the property so it will be fun to see what happens.
-
Yelp using my new patented frog call................shotgun shouldered...see sling.
-
Yelp after using my new patented frog call....you have heard about kissing a frog...right. Well he didn't turn into a prince...lol.
-
Seems he would need to blow in the other end of that frog call to get the croak :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-

Nope..........not's Yelp's style.....he likes those softer, subdued tones. Kind of like glass over slate....only this is a** over ............ :chuckle:

Hot off the shelf...perfect gift for this Turkey season..Forget the Hen Squealer...Try the "The Frog Squealer"..Drives male frogs wild..brings them hopping and croaking, which as we all know drives wild turkeys crazy!

All kidding aside, this thread does have vast ecological significances. Based on that, and the fact that our world is slowly coming to an end with the recent warnings of gobal warming as evidenced by record snowstorms in Washington D.C., I felt compelled to report Yelp and his demeaning racial frog postings to the following..........

I am seeking new memberships to the "Washington State Croakers Association"..our motto is "I hope we croak before you do!" It is made up of turkey hunters that prefer croaking in that gobbler.
We also are starting a youth program called "Tadpolers" and "Toad in the woods" program for the lady croakers out there. All of our local chapters have Super Jump banquets where we raise money for Amphibian habitat here in Washington. Our conservation program wants to increase frogs across the state to benefit wild turkeys.
Daily Memberships are $5 99.9% of the funds go to administration the rest go to entertainment..Also look for Croaker Call TV..coming soon.
I am a marketing genius!
LOL..
OK...I need to go see the shrink and have a double shot..I think I have lost it... :'(

Just got a verbal commitment from TurkeyDancer for the upcoming Tadpoler event at Frogelas. He was kind enough to send some video footage of a recent individual seminar he gave to a potential young tadpoler. Afterward the kid did sign up and forked over his allowance to the NFTF.........
