Title: Downriggers?
Post by: D_morg on February 02, 2010, 06:59:00 AM: I was wondering what's your rigger of choice,and why. I need to get a pair,but cant make up my mined. I don't want to turn this into a mines better than yours thing, I would just like some input thanks.

Having a life time warranty is not a bad thing either.
They come with every thing you need to start using them with exception of the weight. IE: Swivel Mount, Telescoping boom (30" to 60") Scotty line release and all electric connections.

Tom Pollock at Sportco in Tacoma is a certified rep, so atleast you'll have piece of mind for the repairs if ever needed. I got manuals, but man electric is the way to go without a doubt.... That up and down by hand gets to be a pain on manuals when you got a crazy terrain bottom....

havent seen too many people with them bbut i sure like them, scottys are just as good in my book also

Post by: BC CHASER on February 02, 2010, 06:09:35 PM: I just put 4 scotty electrics on my boat. I like the fact that you can get parts for them at just about any sports shop and there are quite a few techs to work on them around. I put the new 175# braided on and it seems to be pretty nice.

Oh and if you get 1106's get the deals that you can pull the ball to the boat without having to turn the downrigger to the side or collapse it. The work really well.

The biggest advantage to the Scottys was their speed. They used to blow everything else away with their speed. Cannon now has the fastest electrics on the market (250' per minute vs. 235 for Scotty)

Scottys were also rated for 20lb weights and Cannons weren't. Now Cannon has the same weight rating.

Scottys aren't as vastly superior as they used to be.

You see allot of Cannons and the like but rarely see Scotty's sitting. There warrenty is so good you can usaully get em fixed on the spot no charge.

If they need fixing, which they rarely do.

Defiance if anyone wants it! :chuckle: Yeah, my mistake. It was dark when I hooked it to the mount at home the night before. I didn't have the pin through correctly. It actually rode about 8 miles to the launch in Gig Harbor, made the journey over to Pt. Defiance but decided to come off the boat when I flipped it over with a ten pound ball hooked to it :bash: Lesson learned. Always make sure the pin is through correctly. :P

Other than that concern, I've always used Scotty's and they've worked great for me.

Here you go Big D.

If you have a boat with higher sides these work great. If your boats low profile or a sled with say 28" sides or lower or it drafts a bit more than others they can suck. The length between rigger pulley and ball is too short and its almost trying to lift the ball rather than pull it to you. I just lift the boom with one hand and grab the release. I also use a 48 inch release so it can be hanging in the boat for ease of clipping and no pull from the ball's weight.
