Title: New Mexico Oryx
Post by: arees on February 05, 2010, 10:57:56 AM
I just got back from a great weekend in New Mexico.  I was lucky enough to draw one on the White Sands Missile Range tags for the Rhodes Canyon area.  I got this one on Sunday morning.

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tgfoitwoods.com%2Fimages%2FOryx_1_small.jpg&hash=68bacc0ee96cd49517dc7c823dede547e0f2b331)

It measured 39 x 39.5 (unofficial measurement by the range staff) making it the longest horns of the weekend.  This was a great experience.  We spotted over 80 animals on Saturday.  I had a nice bull (~36 inches) in my sights early Saturday but decided to hold out to see the rest of the herd.  The rest of the herd never came out of the brush and eventually the one I was considering bolted.

Even though there were 107 hunters in the area, there was plenty of space for us to get away from the crowds.  When I shot mine on Sunday, we had photos done and the animals half way gutted before we saw any other hunter go by.  We spent lots of time glassing from the high points around the range and made several stalks.  Most of them were blown by their excellent eyesight and great hearing.  The Sunday morning hunt was a lucky break.  We had a plan for where we wanted to be to try to find the herds we were seeing on Saturday.  We expected to find them in a place well away from the other hunters.  On the way we found a pair standing off the side of the road.  Sometimes you take what luck gives you.

I hunted with Tim Barraclough of Kiowa Hunting Service.  Having someone along who could judge oryx was a big help.  It also let me fly in and fly out with minimal equipment.

Yes, it was a female.  I may have to go to Namibia to get the matching bull.

Love those long horns the cows have.  I think they make a better trophy.  the bulls are nice and have thick bases, but if you want a dramatic sweeping set of horns for the wall, nothing beats a Gemsbok cow.

congrats on a great trophy!  Nice shot placement too!

I have been enjoying my first steaks from this oryx tonight.  I marinaded them, rubbed them in spices and seared them on the Big Green Egg. :) :) :)  These beasts are excellent on the plate.  Very lean and very tender.

You know I have been pondering on trying to do one of these hunts but finances are not really allowing it at this time... and you certainly are not making things any better....hahaha
