Not a very eye appealing rack. :twocents:
-
What kinda rack is that?
Captive, High Fence, Steroid and supplement influenced genetics.....
Now if that was a wild animal, from free range, at half the size.......
I still wouldn't buy a replica that I had no connection/history to/with....
or claim a connection to just to attract questions I couldn't answer truthfully.... :twocents:
-
Why would somebody buy a mount that somebody else shot? Especially a replica. Besides, the only time the size of the rack counts is when you ethically took the animal, fair chase.
-
there is definitely a huge market out there for replica animals no matter where they were shot. I think that fair chase public land hunters are the minority anymore and lots of people buy these for there place of business or whatever. I wouldn't buy something like that but many out there would for sure.

I may be wrong, but are not a large amount of the mounts in the cabelas stores repo's??

I never thought about that, but they would probably have to be. They have several state record animals in various stores. I would assume that state record animals would be hard to talk a hunter out of. I would never sell a state record for any price, if I shot it.

Cabelas strives to purchase the real thing, so MANY of their mounts are real, and often are local. HOWEVER, the ex- sportsmans whorehouse was filled with replicas. You could see the same animals in all of their stores. I see no need for replicas and am not impressed AT ALL. I can use alot of bondo for 3500 bucks
-
Just don't get the whole replica thing...... I might take the real deal for cheap if it was something like this:

That's good to know, Bone. I wonder how much money they spend on purchasing mounts for each store? There are some impressive trophy's in Cabela's.

That thing is hideous! Whitetail racks aren't supposed to look like that. I wish people would quit trying to grow these "trophy" bucks. I wouldn't pay $3500 to shoot that ugly thing, let a lone buy a replica of it. :mor:

That rack is a reproduction off a deer named Goliath. He died on Dec 6th 2004. Here is a link to more info.

As far as reproductions go there is a sizable market for them. Lot of times Lodges, private collectors etc buy them for display. I see no problem in buying a reproduction and having it mounted. Especially if it is going to display in a place of business.
I have a 203" Double Drop tine reproduction in my shop right now that I bought to mount up as a display when I was in GA. For the last 4 years it has been sitting in a box unfinished because I don't have the time. Am I doing it so I can tell my customers look at this awesome deer I shot. NO, it is just something cool and when it is mounted it will be something cool and nice to look at.
I am not going to mount it and hang it in my house.
I knew a guy back east that every other year he bought a reproduction of a whitetail Rack. Mostly Former Records and had them mounted. I think he had a separate building behind his house that he displayed them.
There are a couple nice reproductions in the Cabela's store down here.

Any idea why a replica would cost that much? Are the antlers made out of gold?

Only if I had a sporting goods-type business to get people to come in the door...

Because it came off of a real animal and wasn't fabricated. It is the largest WT known in the U.S. Also because something like that would be a real pain in the rear end to make a mold of. Big Deer like that back east are in demand.
Out here in the West we have a great deal more variety of animals to hunt. Out East basically Whitetail, Turkey, Wild Boar, and Bear. So Whitetails are a BIG thing back there. Who can grow or produce the biggest is a big thing.

I wonder how many of the Cabelas or any store mounts are shed horns. The last time I was at Cabelas I noticed one of the elk had been chewed on by a rodent?

they have shed mounts in many of their stores...

Not impressed. I dont like the nontypical grown stuff :twocents:

I wouldn't be so nice... I'd just call it what it is... UGLY!!! I wouldn't pay 10 cents for that thing.
-
The fact that it is a reproduction, and someone wants 3500.00 is what makes it unappealing. God knows how rare a non-typical is. We all love antlers, they're beautiful in how they grow. A true record trophy no matter how odd the shape. Gods touch in wildlife art. We as hunters cherish our antlers, sheds and racks alike, but it is unethical to copy and cheapen the real thing.
-
I would still think it is ugly if it was the real thing and wouldn't want it on my wall.
-
So you're saying you would pass it up if it were in your sights? You might have a change in opinion if it were your trophy.
-
No, I wouldn't pass it up. I just wouldn't mount the head and hang it on my wall.
