Post by: turkey slayer on February 09, 2010, 06:50:33 PM
So yesterday headed to Coulee City I seen 5 does and a 2x3. One of the does had about 3 to 4 inches missing off her ears. What do you thing frost bite. The 1st and 3rd is her and the 2ed is the 1 that was standing next to her , look at the difference. She kooked old also :dunno:

I'd say frostbite, or a coyote had a light snack.

Farmer could have trimmed it off when the doe was a fawn. Lots of farmers notch an ear on fawns during hay season when they find them while cutting hay so they can see if they get that deer during hunting season later in its life. :twocents:

Remember that pick Bone had of the buck holding down the doe- I bet some buck tried to get his way with her and she fought so he tried getting a hold of her ear to keep her there but she had so much spunk that it ripped.  :P

Its frostbite. I saw one like that just this weekend also. Its pretty common in open terrain that gets hit by blustery winter weather.

I have wondered this same ? Since october. A youth hunter, I took hunting this year in stevens county 121 shot a whitey doe and her ears where pretty much gone, she had little cone ears.I figured it must be frost bite. :dunno: Only one i have ever seen like that.

I've seen quite a few like that in WY.  Spoke with a VERY selective hunter once who was getting a lot of grief in his camp, he'd killed a little 16" 4pt.  His story?  It jumped up out of the sagebrush running away, and all he saw was that it was "better than an ears length outside the ears".  Too bad for him, the ears were only about 3" long!!
