Title: What we do for our best friends
Post by: Shootmoore on February 13, 2010, 12:52:10 PM: Well I have been sitting here worring about my lab, took him in for surgery today, he developed a bad ear infection that partially ruptured both eardrums. It also caused a syst in his face that was growing huge the last couple days to the point that he could hardly open his mouth. With the surgery, antibotics and medications I am thankfull that my tax returns came a few days ago. They also found a heart murmur and they will need to do more tests but sounds like he will be going on heart meds as well. I get to spend the next 5 days of my vacation cleaning a tube hanging out the side of his face.

Not having a wife or kids I guess my lab becomes my kid as I was worried something fierce about the old boy. I appologize to Galpster for not making it down to help his boy out with shooting but the infection came on fast and needed to get it taken care of before it killed him. It amazes me that I have spent more money on my lab medical than I do for myself. I'm so cheap that I actually extracted a wisdom tooth that broke and became infected on myself (by the way bad idea it hurt like hell) but I don't think twice about paying out the nose for my four legged friend.

I guess the rebuild on my AR and a new 45 will wait till next year.

Sorry starting to ramble on but I did not realize that I was stressing so bad until I got the call that the surgery went well. With the heart murmur there was some concern that the anesthesia could kill him.

My previous lab ended up costing me quite a bit over her life due to a severe ear infection (I ended up with her seeing a dog neurologist). Her face was partially paralyzed at the end of that event. Also ended up with pyometra another time. Serious surgery with that one. She ended up with a full life and ended her days at the house years later passing away on her bed in front of the fire. About as good of a ending as I could have asked for for such a devoted friend.

What this boils down to is family takes care of family. These pups end up working their way into your heart and you feel as though they are your kid. I have and do take care of my pups the same way. I'm glad the surgery went well.

Post by: gasman on February 13, 2010, 07:56:05 PM: I would do any thing for my best friend. Right now he is sitting at my feet farting (it stinks) and waiting for me to mve. As soon as i get up he follows me every where.

I am not single, I have a great wife and two kids but they are older now and do not need, or some times want dad around, but my Buddy always wants me around :IBCOOL:

I hope every thing goes well for him and you and a quick recovery.

Post by: Shootmoore on February 15, 2010, 11:01:47 PM: Speaking of which, does anyone know of any home remedies to keep dogs from getting ear infections? I have tried keeping his ears cleaned but I am loosing the battle. Poor old boy has to surgical tubes coming out of his cheek and it appears to come from ear infections. The outer ears looked clean but apparently the inner ears were infected causing a abscess to form in his cheek.

He appears to be feeling better, although he is getting tired of me using heat packs and warm compresses to get the infection out of his cheek. Hopefully the checkup tomorrow he gets the tubes removed. I tell you one thing, dogs are tuff animals, he acts like its not a problem but I can guarantee I would be miserable with two holes in my cheek with tubes hanging out.
