Title: Duck Calls!
Post by: rainshadow1 on February 19, 2010, 01:56:26 PM
First jump over from predator calls since WAAAAAAAaaaayyyyyy back when I first started!

When I first started turning, I was making everything I could, to start learning. So I made some duck and goose calls with all kinds of different voices. Then I switched to predator calls almost exclusively, with an occasional deer grunt or crow call.

I've been thinking about doing more duck calls, so I started checking out the reeds on the market lately. JC reeds just recently came out with a new Mallard call voice. It's modular, stainless and mylar. I figured out how to tune them and they work really, really nice. I'll wager they're almost bulletproof when it comes to moisture (except for ice, of course.) Loud, excellent hails, cackles, chatter, and quacks. Way better than I'd found in the past.

When I first got them I thought they weren't at all tunable, but I figured out how to tune and adjust them. Kinda backwards from traditional voices. You leave the reed alone and manipulate the soft stainless toneboard. It works really well and it's hard to screw up!

These first 3 units are all single reeds, but I also have double reed units I'm going to be building into some of the next calls.

Take a look at the first 3...

The Laminate bodies should be extremely durable and hold up for many, many years. Not like plastic, but almost! And who wants plastic when you can have a call that looks like this?!?!?

Thanks Guys!

My goal is to inventory these in a few stores for next season...

I've looked at the pricing on the internet.

These are really pretty (but not show), custom, field calls. When I put them in stores I think I'll be trying for $50 to $75 from them...

Here, as from the store owners, I think I'd like to get wholesale for them...

I think for now I'll go $40 for the brass banded call, and $35 for the unbanded calls.

I'm going to do banded calls for the most part, brass, copper, and likely I'll get into some horn, antler, and other creative things in the future.

I'll also be getting into other materials for body and insert, and getting some stuff stabilized.

The middle banded call is sold.

I'll post 3 more tomorrow, (all with tapered brass bands.)

Bumping the bar up on myself a little...

This was fun. It's a woodland camo Spectraply body, stabilized, with a honey cow horn ring and a buffalo horn mouthpiece. The insert is one piece of Buffalo horn.
