Title: Scope/Rifle Pairing Question
Post by: uplandhunter870 on February 19, 2010, 02:57:25 PM
Not sure where this thread is best placed, So Mods feel free to move if its miss placed.

anyhow its that time of year where things are slow and i dont get out much.  i was cleaning guns and gear getting stuff situated for the off-season for some guns and getting other guns and fishing gear ready when i started thinking about this:

I have two hunting rifles, a Rem 700 in 270win (that ive had forever) and a Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 243 (recent acquisition).  i have scopes for both.  Currently i have a Nikon Buckmaster 4-14.5x 40 on the 270 and a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 on the 243.  the 243 is my designated varmit rifle and the 270 is the big game rifle. I arhcery hunt for deer so big game is bear and elk.

was thinking i might want to swap the scopes around and have the monarch on the 270 because of the higher power and larger lense since its a big game rifle and put the buckmaster on the 243 since the longest coyote shot i will ever have is 300yds.

I cant make up my mind, so what would you all do in this situation or are things best the way they are.

thanks
Steve

In my opinion, the scopes are perfect where they are. :)

Yup.. Don't change a thing. -With what you have there. It depends more on the terrain that you hunt and the distances of shots taken. I would even drop the 270 to a brighter but shorter variable power scope. Something like a 3-9x50.

I don't agree with all the others. I would swap them, not because of the difference in power, as the difference between 14x and 16x isn't much. But, I would want the Monarch on the big game rifle, just for the reason that the Monarch is a much better quality scope than the Buckmaster. That's just me though, it kind of depends where your priorities are. To me the elk/bear rifle should have the scope with the better optics. But predators are maybe more of a priority for you than big game, I don't know. Just my opinion, that is what I would do.
