Title: Stupid question!
Post by: mallard79 on February 23, 2010, 06:16:49 PM
:bash:I know I'm gonna get a ton of flack for this but I'm doing it anyway.  I have never hunted coyotes before so I am looking for (public land) somewhere between Cle Elum and Ellensburg, or in the Wenatchee area, to shoot some coyotes.  I don't want anyones honey hole or anything, just pointed in the general direction of some public land worth looking at.  I have a couple areas in mind but am not sure of the access this time of year or if they are worth the drive from Monroe.  Any ideas on wet side areas to look at are welcome too!  PM me with any help you are willing to give.  I would really like to get out w/ someone who knows what they are doing if anyone wants a tag along :dunno:

Also, I don't have the money to drop on a e-caller right now so what are a few good/cheaper mouth calls I should get?

Thanks  :)

give Bearmanric or rainshadow a shout.  i picked up some calls from rick earlier this season and they sound great really impressed and for the set i got it was less than 20.  im sure rainshadow makes some great calls too put i dont have any first hand experience with him.

kind of the wrong time of the year to start chasing dogs in this area. had some friends that went out over the weekend and said they saw a bunch but the dogs werent interested in anything they threw sound wise at them.

Just go out turkey hunting set up a hen decoy and start calling for em. That's how I got my last coyote, came in at 15 yards sneakin up on the deek. 3 1/2" #4's and he was down for the count.  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Thanks for the input everyone!  I'm sure I will have more questions later but this seemed like a good way to get started. :)

For the most part I would agree with your statement. However myself and others who have posted similar requests as new members have been met with responses such as "Use search to read other posts", "Do the legwork yourself.", or "Maybe you should contribute more to the forum before making such requests." To be honest I was pleasantly surprised to see someone with a post count of 2 get such a positive response to his request. Maybe I will have to make another thread to see if I can find some areas to start huntign near where I live.  ;)

I agree Atroxus, i've seen the same thing happen.  Thats why i said people tend to be helpful.....not "are always helpful"  ;)

If your ever out in the Tri-Cities area shoot me a message, we can go shoot some stuff.

allot of the time it is the way that people ask we are not hear to beat people up over asking questions. and also what you ask about, like asking about deer and elk areas well thats a bit diffrent then yote hunting info. and yes we like to see people contribute before asking for areas to hunt because it takes allot for most of us to even find a spot for ourselves but general info most of the time if given without to much bashing  :chuckle: but smart remarks like " However myself and others who have posted similar requests as new members have been met with responses such as "Use search to read other posts", "Do the legwork yourself.", or "Maybe you should contribute more to the forum before making such requests." To be honest I was pleasantly surprised to see someone with a post count of 2 get such a positive response to his request." will not usally help you gain popularity on this site. we like to see people read other posts before asking questions sometimes the topics were discussed very recent. and also people that don't want to work to find a spot and expect other to hand out there info when it has taken allot of foot work and time to find a spot for them. hope this helps you.

I wasn't trying to be a smart-ass. The reason for my post was just to point out a possible reason the OP expected to get flamed. I agree that the majority of people that post on this forum are very nice and helpful. If someone new reads a bit on this forum before posting there are a few people that give the impression that newbies asking for help are likely to catch a bit of of a hard time from some certain people. I was just putting it out there because it can be discouraging to get flak for trying to learn. Granted I caught a lot less on this forum than I did on some others, but it could be the reason that the OP expected to get flamed for his post.
