Title: Which ignition?
Post by: Bowcop on February 25, 2010, 05:18:57 PM
I have a M700ML that is WA legal. I have both nipples, Musket and #11. Which would be the better of the two? The hole for the flame to escape is bigger in the #11 than the Musket. I have been told the Musket cap shoots hotter.

Opionions welcome!

I prefer the musket cap. Never tried the # 11, but i figured more flame is better...

Have used both, never had a problem with either, long as gun is cleaned good and dry powder.

I use a #11 on my remington700 ml.
If you do Remington caps fit the remington nipples the best.  different shape nipple than the TC and Knight and cva nipples.

I think he may be referring to RWS caps, I don't know they are water proof but they are hotter and more reliable than any other #11 I have found. I have not been able to find any locally for a while now. They are made by Dynamit Nobel out of Germany.  :twocents:  I do have a few thousand sittin the safe though :)

Yes definitely the German ones.  You can use either percussion # 11 or muskey.  I perfer musket....hotter.  Name of the game in muzzleloading is going boom, not pop.  The ignition of the powder is paramount.
Go on line and you can find the German caps at Dixie Gun Works....and they don't soak you additional charges for shipping caps like everyone does, because they are a hazard bs.  I just copied the link for you.  If you want #11's, just search percussion caps and the German ones will come up in a list of caps.

If you choose #11 caps, you will need to modify your remington nipple to shoot the RWS, because they don't usually push on far enough by hand.

My experience with RWS - the bolts first fire pushes the nipple further on to the nipple, so if you cycle the bolt and fire a second time it will fire.  I dealt with a gunsmith in Spokane that didn't know that there was a difference in the nipple design for the Remington, and thought they were a Piece of chit, because you always had to grind the nipple to get caps to fit.  I handed him a tin of Remington caps, and said try these where he said lots of chit under his breath, and low and behold it went of on the first time.  So he said it must be a fluke, tried again, BOOM, weird.  He got a bit embarrassed after that.

Anyway point is the Remington #11 work great as do the musket caps.  enjoy

As far as the german caps being waterproof. We soaked one in a cup of water for over 24hrs. pulled it out of the cup and placed it on the gun, and boom. We alway's take a drive down to Bob's in longview and pick some up. As far as the other cap's out there. We never tried soaking anything else, so I'm not sure if they would do the same.
