I recently got permission to hunt some private land on Anderson Island here in Pierce county. Probably not much of a hunt, but a pretty sure harvest as it's either sex there.
Just curious if any one has tried hunting there?
-
Oh, just about everybody calls those deer their pets on that island. Stick to your private land offering. Much of the rest is posted and there's not much public land. Don't hunt the park! If you harvest, I suggest you keep quiet and cover said carcas in your truck. No reason to create altercation at the ferry landing. Lots of tree huggers on that island.

:yeah: for sure. hunters dont seem to be real popular there.
-
Be careful, those deer will eat your lunch if you turn your back to them for one second! Yep, it's like hunting your pet dog in your front yard. The hippies out there will have a lynching party if they catch you hauling one of their precious babies off of the island. Keep it on the Q T!
-
If you're bowhunting, make sure you make a good shot. nothing worse than chasing a cripple into the neighbors rose bushes. There are some BRUISER deer on the islands due to the fact that in much of the private land there isn't any hunting and their main predators are cars. Blacktails have become well adapted to the backyard habitat and I have seen some that you would swear were mule deer based on their racks.
-
I used to own a house on this island and also own other lot on golf course about 15 years ago. I love it there. :chuckle: Sold both Recently. Always see one or more deer EVERY Fking day!

If I chose to actually take the owner up on their offer, I would definitely be using a shotgun or muzzle loader. I'm not an archer and wouldn't want an arrowed deer wandering off across property lines to cause a big hassle.
Thanks for the input.

You could probably just get one to walk into a horse trailer with some apples in the front, drive off the island and dispatch it at your convenience.

Sounds like a nice plan.....

So this post got me thinking, hmmmmm, angry hippies but tame deer......Looked on line and saw that "Andy's Park" is quite a nice little piece of property. Anybody know if this is open to bow hunters? I've looked a bit and haven't figured out if the park is officially a park or what the rules are for the area. Personally, if you want to make the trip and be discreet to not PO the locals I say take your bow and have at it!

Some family friends of mine have 20 acres out there, I went out three times the past season (one afternoon and two mornings). Saw deer two, one each of the mornings I went. I found morning is the best time to go, catch the 5:45am ferry over. One of the deer I didnt see and spooked it about 20 feet in front of me (can you say dense bushes!!!). And the other one I saw, it was just barely legal shooting hours, very heavy cloud cover and it was backed up against same very dark trees. So needless to say it was still too dark and looked like a big stump and I couldn't tell where the legs stopped, chest began and where the neck started. Oh yeah, and it was 45 yards away (too far for my unrifled shotgun) it was staring strait at me (no broadside or quartering shot). We ended up staring at each other for about 3 or 4 minutes, I was hoping she would move and give me a better shot, but no luck.
I dont know the size of the property you have permission on, but on the 20 acres I found I had a chance at 1 deer per day.
As far as the apples go, this property has apple trees everywhere whith fallen apples averywhere, and very few of the apples had bite marks and the deer werent around the apples much. Kinda strange I thought!!
One of the parks I saw, I read the park rules and it said no discharge of firearms, but didn't post anything about hunting. So you might be ok with a bow.
As odd as it sounds for a small piece of property, do a little preseason scouting at the time you would hunt and see what you find. I went out once before the season, and learned a lot the three times I went out about where the deer are and hand out.

I haven't hunted it, but twenty years ago I knew some Nisqually's who used to shoot decent bucks there. They would take a boat from the landing on the Nasty or they would run up Mcallister so they wouldn't have to pull out at Luhrs with multiple deer in their sleds.

Why is everyone so scared of these people? Are you cowards or what? Stand up to them. Carry a side arm and don't be afraid to show it when they get in your face. I am tired of sportsman that submit to their intimidation. Grow a pair and stand up for your selves. Don't be a *censored*.

I agree with you here on a level. How about instead of flashing a side arm why not bear a good argument and educate these people when confronted. It's our right to hunt and I agree with you we shouldnt be ashamed.
Hell ya its our right to be out there hunting but we need to educate as many people and get as many young kids hunting as we can. IMO if someone flashed a gun at a non-hunter they would most likely put MORE effort and $ into getting hunting stopped. Which is not really helping our cause.

Instead of flashing a side arm to a bunny hugging hippy (which is called intimidating with a fire arm, illegal) just pull out your cell phone and call 911 for a cop. Harassment of a lawful hunter is also against the law.. Use the law to your favor..

:yeah:
And after the cop leaves offer to cook the hippie a nice, fresh deer steak dinner over an open fire of old growth logs.

Yeah show them how good life can be  :chuckle: Maybe even throw in some spotted owl, or even some stuffed seagull :chuckle: :chuckle:

Can't argue that, can't you?

This thread started out really funny, WTF, I was LMAO, why does some people allways have to ruin it.

You need to be respectful of the people/friends that were nice enough to let you hunt their land. If they ask you to be descrete, you need to do as they ask. That is a very small community over there and like all small towns, word travels quick. Last thing you want is an anti-hunter giving the land owner who was nice enough to grant you premission, a hard time!! Just be respectful of all involved.
I dont agree with non-hunters stance either, but chances are if an altercation takes place they will be even stronger in their stance and will make it tougher for all hunters.

Well said.

I think that area is firearm restricted (might be wrong on that?), therefore you could use a crossbow.
Skinnyman, rifled slugs should give you better accuracy than 45 yards, especially with a sight other than just the bead.... They are nice and cheap to shoot compared to sabot slugs for rifled barrels, just find one your gun likes.
-
I didn't mean to go looking for a confrontation. The anti's are usually the people that will get right up in your face and at times get physical. I don't kno about you guys, but if someone is in my face, I draw my side arm, then pull out the phone and dial 911. You will be suprised how fast the cops get there. Don't get me wrong. I would be looking for trouble. But these people are unreasonable.
By the way, I do stand up for my rights as a hunter with an intelligent debate.
-
I'm still considering whether or not this opportunity is worth the hassle. The landowner is fine and would love to lower the deer population.
If I go, I would most certainly be as discreet as possible and use all necessary caution and courtesy. As for people who don't like hunters, they would have to trespass on my friends land in order to voice their opinion.
Interesting thoughts that you all have shared and I am grateful.

i'd worry more about pissing the land owner off than anyone else. :twocents: I think its funny to be nice and polite (overly so) to ignorat people.... It seems to get them piss of more than talking to them.... Most of the time they are just mad and itching for a fight so when you don't react as expected it throws them off gaurd.... That said i wouldn't take any grief from some :tree1: that gave me grief about what i do on my own or public property....

Yeah you're probably right...better just PM me with the landowners info and I'll post the pics of the buck that could have been yours :chuckle:
Get out there and hunt that $hit! Sounds like you have a good enough head on your shoulders, do yourself and the landowner a favor and help get the deer population in check! :IBCOOL:

I'm going to head over and check the actual property in a few weeks.
-
Never heard of it... Maby my dad has. :dunno:
-
How large of a piece of property is it?? 1 acre, 50 acres??
-
I think it is somewhere between 15 and 20 acres.
-
Killerbee,
Sent you a PM about Anderson.
-
I just got permission from someone who has some property over there too. As long as you follow the rules and do what your supposed to I don't think there will be problems. They are right, if someone does give you any flack be nice and then call the cops if needed. We have a legal right to hunt. I'm keepin my head down and keepin my new spot to my self so I can continue hunting there for years to come. I've lost too many spots due to development to ruin a spot that is already in a developed area by getting people worked up seems like a bad idea. Hope this one turns out to be a good one.
-
Maybe it's a westside/redneck thing but I would make it well known and probably tell everyone that had a problem with what I had done to kiss my a$$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but that's just me, sometimes I get told I should bite my lip! To many people now days are worried about what other people think and what they might say, I say live your life the way you want to and Joe down the street has a problem with it TOUGH :ass:
-
Sounds like it could be as much as 40 acres.

After scouting all summer and posting a trial cam. We went out on opening morning and my buddy took a healthy huckleberry fed fat doe on the property. He took the doe with a Federal Truball slug out of a 12ga at 25yds. She went about 25yds after the shot and laid down. Perfect double lunger and nothing wasted.
We have only seen a forky other than does but captured a very nice 3x3 on the cam.
I'll be back out there looking for this guy!
