BLKBEARKLR - I will be stationed around Anchorage, so that's probably where I'll be doing my hunting. I'm interested in caribou as well.

Anchorage area sucks for hunting, there is good bear hunting south of there, like said keep in touch and I can link you up with a buddy up there that can take you out hunting. There are some decent areas headed out of Anchorage for moose hunting if you have a quad. Caribou will either be a fly in trip or long drives, but with you being in the airforce they do a lot of fly ins to remote sites that will be a big plus for you.

I have killed three Alaskan moose and none at over 40 yards. This is the thing you need though.

One of the places I wouldn't mind getting stationed at is the Army base at Fairbanks, AK. BLKBEARKLR do you know what the hunting's like up around there?
I was stationed at Wainwright from 92-95, that is where I first started whacking my alaskan critters, I know some sweet places up there. When I was at Anchorage from 2000-2003 I would drive all the way up to fairbanks to go whack moose.
Awesome place wether you are in Anchorage or fairbanks.

Awsome thanks. If I get stationed there I may have to pick your brain. And of course you'd most definately have a place to stay. It all depends on what airframe I fly. Such as they don't have Apaches in Alaska.

Oh so not true, there are moose and bears everywhere around Anchorage. It's incredible how many critters are within spitting distance of Anchorage. If you want a black bear take a hike pretty much anywhere in 14C or anywhere else above treeline in Aug/Sept and you will see dozens/day. As for moose, you can look into taking horses into the drainages of the Chugach range and there are moose EVERYWHERE.
Hunt the last week of the season for the pre-rut and some early rut. I've hired 2 horses for $250 round trip (4 hour trip one way) If you are a guy who likes to hunt around quads than you will be around people regardless of how "far" you get in. People will drive past moose to "get in the furthest" and they expect to drive right up on one of these critters. Tuthfully, when the rut is on it's not hard to kill a moose up there and fat asses on quads can be successful but its better if you get off the machine and walk up drainages.
I've killed 5 moose within 60 miles of downtown Anchorage, theres some real easy to get to areas that dont have any quad access where there are lots of moose. Most of the time they are much higher than you think a moose would be. Probably more at lower elevations than I think but tough to see due to the thickness.
Hunting moose is hard work. If you want to be successful its not hard to kill a moose. Go up in the drainages of the mountains until you are in alders...there will be moose around. The hard part is getting those big *censored*s out of there.
