i just got a savage 17hmr and was wondering if anyone has used duracoat. I want to paint the stock and probably the scope. Is duracoat the way to go or does anyone know of any other way to go about it. I dont want to spray paint because i'm sure that will just scratch off easily. I got the electric blue laminated thumbhole stock and if someone wants it I'll trade for another thumbhole stock if its in good condition. I got the model 93r17 with the bull barrel so i would need a similar stock.
thanks,

I have a rifle or two with duracoat on them, its basically an a epoxy spray and it's very durable if its finished correctly and comes in just about any color or pattern you want. It can be sprayed on metal or plastic surfaces. I would recommend it if your looking to add some color to a firearm I think its the best finish available :twocents:

ive sprayed 3 of my guns with it . if you prep it right it darn neer indestructable
-
so do you spray them yourself? or take them somewhere?

I had my gunsmith in Snohomish do mine, he's pretty good at it. I guess it depends on how sophisticated your patterns are. If you're doing only one color and feel pretty competent in your abilities do it yourself. You need a automotive type airbrush system and you can order the colors and camo kits for Lauer. http://www.lauerweaponry.com/ (http://www.lauerweaponry.com/)
-
Can you get it locally or only mail order?
-
I don't know if a store like Cabela's would have something like Duracoat but you could call and ask. I never ordered any myself my gunsmith either had it in stock at his shop or placed a order with Lauer or Brownells. If you go on the Lauer website you can click a tab that gives the names and numbers of certified sprayers in each state some of them might have colors on hand.

I sprayed one rifle with it and loved it. I bought the kit that came with the cheap-ass harbor freight airbrush and the mix for maybe $50? Make sure you do good prep work. On mine I had sandblasted and parkerized it prior to spraying. They make a wood filler to smooth out wood prior to spraying, I would recommend that for the stock. It is possibly the easiest material to shoot with no drips, very smooth. Tip - instructions say to run the brush at 35 psi, I couldn't get it to even come out, try 50.
If you don't want to go through the hassle of airbrush setup and all that, try Brownells gun kote. A friend of mine has finished multiple guns with it and it holds up pretty good. Dunno how it would do on the stock though.
You must have picked up that boyds stock a few weeks ago when they were on clearance, I almost got one but just couldn't stand that color!

I've heard that they sell it in an aerosol rattle can type application too...
I'm gonna have one of mine done by my gunsmith too one of these days.

its not a boyds stock that i know of. It came with the gun from Cabelas. It was in their add for their last sale that was saturday only. I'll get a pic of it on here tonight or tomorrow if i remember. i'm looking into that hydro dip process also but it seems expensive.

here is the stock if anyone is interested in a trade.

Well that's what I get for assuming lol!
Boyd's was running a sale on Marlin 917v stocks for like 50 bucks a few weeks ago. It was some atrocious color, sky blue laminate I think. Would look okay in a SS rig but not blued.
-
Pretty sure thats a Boyd's stock.
-
Yeah, looks like it.
-
alright. piss on it then. i'll just paint over it.
-
I'd duracoat it if you don't like the look of it...but I would make sure 1st that laminate stock will hold the finish.
-
i'll probably strip it first then sand and prime 3 coats before painting. i'm trying to find someone who can airbrush (not the duracoat.) I need someone who can airbrush flames.......like this.
I love the looks of this.

Talk to Kain on here...I think he does it.
