Title: what type of magazine?
Post by: BIGINNER on March 12, 2010, 11:25:21 AM
whats better,  tube fed mag for a .22 rifle,  or clip fed?

I like clip fed 22lr's.  But only if they don't protrude below the stock of the gun.

I'm not saying it's better, but I'd go with a clip fed magazine.  Pop in a loaded clip and you're ready to go.  You're finished, and you pop it out.  With the tube fed, it's a hassle unloading your gun if you don't want to fire all the rounds.

That is simply unheard of.   :chuckle:

Clips easier to work with and quicker to change out.  You can carry a pocket of clips if your out plinking.

Those are NOT CLIPS!!!!!!!!!  They are MAGAZINES!!!

CLIPS are disposable.  MAGAZINES are not!   CLIPS go in for example, and M1 Garand.  Magazines go in for example a 1911 .45 acp.

I like tubes for .22's only because you can load 15-20rds in most 23+ of .22 shorts

You can buy speed loaders for them, long tubes that let you pour in the rounds...course they don't travel well..

"Don't want to fire all the rounds"??   I don't get it :chuckle:

Thank you, that is one of my pet peaves.  The guys at work get tired of me correcting them all the time so I try and keep quite here about it.

A clip

A Magazine

An easy way to think about it, a mag holds the rounds internally, a clip only holds the rounds together.  There are very few true clips out there ie the M1 Garand is clip fed.  Most clips are what are refered to as "Stripper Clips" ie SKS stripper clips used to load a fixed Magazine SKS..

Back on topic I prefer detachible magazine fed to tube mag. Safer loading and unloading than with the tube fed.

Man that is my peeve too.

The other one that get me is when someone describes their scope as a 3x10x50 as if it had a 3rd dimension.

I think I spend too much time on gun forums.

I would go with a clip. All my guns have clips. I have a 50 round banana clip for my 10-22.   :chuckle:  :chuckle:  :chuckle:

I suspect that you may find the answer dependent on the gun.  Some guns with standard magazines will be more reliable than others with tubular magazines and vice versa.

I like the larger capacity of the tube fed and the fact it is out of the way but I prefer detachable clips for everyday use. keep a couple in a pocket and insert a new one.

thats a tough question I like both and use both, my 2 favorite rimfires are an ruger 77/22mag 77/17hmr and an winchester model 72a the winchester is tube fed and the ruger is magazine fed.

tube fed rifles are a bit easier on your fingers if you plan on doing a lot of shooting.  loading a box magazine over and over gives me sore thumbs.

Jody is the Weasel that made excuses for not Enlisting and while you're away on Duty chases after your Girl, messes with your car etc...the bum that buys gear at the Army/Navy Surplus and pretends to be some kind of Hero...

Shane, I could not agree more.  That irritates me too, everytime I see some describing a scope like that.... :bash:  I always bite my tongue, but still it gets to me.........   Sometimes, for instance someone will just say they have a 4X12 and I know they mean 4-12 X whatever but I almost say something to the effect of "gee, that sure is a compact scope you got there". :P

Anyway, back to the topic.......detachable mag would be preferred over tube feed for me as well.
