Remember to warn the significant other that it's in the freezer. Last thing someone might want to be "surprised" by when they reach for the haggen daz.
-
Heres a couple pics of the kitty.

Nice! That's a pretty cat. Good job.

Very pretty cat... more red than I'm used to seeing. :)

Thanks guys, it was quite a surprise. I was set up in a clear cut trying to call in coyotes (AKA playing with my new spitfire), i was using coyote vocalizations and the lighting jack sound, when a coyote came in at a pretty good pace, but i only just got a glimpse of him at about 75 yards and he gave me the slip without being seen again :'( I sat on that stand for a good hour and nothing else came in.
I sat with the spitfire silenced for 20 min before i decided to call it quits and head back towards the truck. As i was walking back to my truck i came to a bend in the road, something orange had caught my eye about 10-15 yards to my right, but i brushed it off as "orangy colored" bark on a stump, but suddenly a low growl filled the woods. i reanaylized the stump and thats when it moved and i made out the shape of a crouched bobcat. I dont know if it was mad because i wasnt the rabbit it was hoping for, or more likely i was just too close, but needless to say the shotgun reported 3 times. That cat ran off with speed that would put the flash to shame. At this point im not even sure if i hit it, i thought the T shot at that range would have flattened it on the spot. I got more discouraged when i found lots of shot holes in the surrounding branches. i got to the spot where it was when i shot, and found no hair nor blood, only tracks. I analyzed the direction it went and spied it lying beneath a fallen log no more than 10 yards from where i had shot it. and thats the story on my first predator ever.
-
Sounds like you are the luckiest sob alive. That was your first predator hunt?
-
oh no i have been after a stinking coyote for a couple years now, i have got them howling at me before, but they always circled down wind and the wetside being as thick as it is i have never been able to pull the trigger on them. First successful predator hunt tho

Thats good to know for future reference. Im near Graham. The lady i spoke with over the phone told me that the earliest i can get it in down there is saturday the 27th at 10 am. I have it whole in the freezer right now.
I do have a question, bear with me as i have never gone through the sealing process before; the regs say that the skull and pelt must be presented non frozen. Does this mean i cannot bring the cat in whole?
-
you can bring it in whole, they get a little pissed when they cant get to the teeth, and a seal hard to put in...If your going to a taxi take it after you get it sealed,thawed..Best to talk with a taxi ahead of time
-
Nice cat! I took one to the fish hatchery in Puyallup to get sealed. I took it in frozen. Didn't matter that the mouth was froze shut. Gamie made a tiny incision in the back leg and ran the band through. Took about 3 minutes.

No, last year Feb/March, I don't remember.

awesome bob man. and congrats on your first predator!
-
That's a great looking bobcat, is it a Tom? I would have been a little freaked out if it had growled at me :chuckle: . I would bring it in as close to frozen as possible then get it to your taxi. I brought mine in half frozen and it wasn't a problem. Congrats on your first

Yes it was a tom. It definetly caught me completely off guard; i had no idea he was there, but for me the real worries started after i fired. He didnt drop, roll or hunch up or anything just flat out bolted. The idea of crawling around in the thicket looking for a wounded and probably even more angry bobcat in close quarters was the most nerve racking part, as i was alone. Luckily he was DOA when i spotted him.
Thanks again for the tips and info on the pelt sealing process, it came in very handy. i plan on pulling him out of the freezer 2 days before my appointment

Kitten Kitten!!! Nice Job!

Nice looking cat,Congrats! Did you weigh him?

A big congratulations on your first cat.
I am the odd duck that likes the red ones better than the light ones.
Here's to many more!!!

Thanks, Yes i most definetly was blessed with this bobcat, the whole thing was random and i know any future bobcat i hunt will not be that easy. I was only going to have the pelt tanned but ive changed my mind and im going to get a life size mount, since it was a very rare experience.
-
Nice looking cat,Congrats! Did you weigh him?
I forgot too weigh him, but i will as soon as i pull him out of the freezer to thaw. id say at leas 18-20 pounds if not a lb or two more.
-
Congrats on a sweet looking cat. I have yet to get me a bob. Mark

Don't know how stuborn they are nowadays, but back when we used to be able to trap we took them in frozen all the time. I was even able to get the officer to cut the band instead of puting it through the leg.

Thats a hell of a first predator. Gorgeous kitty. Grats!
