a guy I work with says he has a 1957 vintage lever action winchester rifle in .308 and I am trying to figure out what the heck it is....
I thought it would be a model 88 but he said it has an external hammer. As near as I can tell(which isn't much with this firewall at work blocking firearms websites) the 88 has no external hammer...
anybody?
we're just curious more than anything.
Thanks in advance.

No the model 88 does not have a external hammer my grandfather has one in .308 I know they made the mod94 in .307win. but was designed in 1982 ? I had it's big brother the .356win http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.307_Winchester (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.307_Winchester)
-
They also made the 1895 in 7.62mm Russian
-
the winchester model 88 was a hammerless that came out in 1955

got all that...we're pretty solid on it not being an 88 at this point...it HAS a hammer.
I haven't seen the gun so thats all I got to go on.
-
I'm bettin that if it is actually a 308win, that it's going to turn out to be an 1895.

Could be he thinkig of the bullet is .308" diameter,
Just a SWAG

I guess I may have forgot to add a crucial piece of info....
the gun uses a 4 shot clip or magazine or whatever you want to call it...the 1895 looks like it may fit the bill.

I don't think he knows enough about guns to even know to think that...does that make sense?
-
If it ends up being an 1895 it will probably be an '06 I don't think they ever made them in .308win http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winchester_1895 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winchester_1895)
-
They made the 1895 in 7.62mm Russian, which is similar to the .308
-
My quess it might be a Browning BLR and he has the date wrong, clip fed 308 with a hammer.

I don't think the 1895 was being made in 1957...... and since they never made it in .308, probably it is not a Win 1895.... :dunno:
-
And that's what's throwing me. '308win' The only lever action winchester I'd think would be strong enough for 308win from that era would be the 1895, but yes, production stopped well before 1957. (1940) I have to believe that there are some in 308, if there were any in 30-06.
So.. That leads me to believe that this guy 'thinks' its a 308. But its either a 307win or 30wcf/30-30. (.308cal) That would put it more reasonably as a model 94 from the date listed.
The only 308win Win lever gun I know of is the model 88 (introduced in 1955) as Jackalope first suggests. But the exposed hammer really throws me.
So, the only lever gun with exposed hammer in 308win I can think of is a Browning BLR. But the BLR wasn't introduced until 1980-ish.
Nope.. Not Marlin either.
I think we're all guessing at this point since we don't have all the information.

Pretty sure I'll find that the gun is not a .308
:dunno:
He's gonna bring it in at some point so we can look at it together...
-
any chance that it is a 303 british? I assume someone made that in a lever gun at some point.
-
Either that or it is a different manufacture and just chambered for .308 WCF
-
Model 1895 was chambered in 303 british......has a detachable mag.....and an exposed hammer. But according to my gun book, production was stopped in 1931. So if it is an 1895, it is a lot older than what he thinks and it is not chambered in .308Win.......
-
I don't think the mag on the 1895 is detachable i believe you have to load from the top of the action. :dunno:
-
what an exciting dilemma?
Can't wait to find out what at actually is? It is very similar to a suspense novel, where you can't wait until you get to find out who killed 'em.
:chuckle:

Yeah, I think you're right........ I think I stated that incorrectly.
My guess is going to be that he is remembering the exposed hammer incorrectly and it is in fact a Win Model 88.......
-
Wrong information from the guy...there's no external hammer and it's a model 88.
sorry.
-
so, did you get a smokin deal on it?
