Title: My 2009 Bear (with footage)
Post by: winston2789 on March 18, 2010, 09:44:21 PM
Well, I figured I would take some of the heat off of Machines with his "baby bear" . This is a video of the bear I shot last year. I will admit that it was a little ground shrinkage and poor judgement on my part. I have shot many bears...this being the smallest by far. I knew he was smaller but thought he was more like 150-160lbs rather than like 110lbs. Though, this is one less fawn killer and tree peeler in my opinion. He filled my tag and my freezer (well maybe didn't FILL my freezer) but I'm happy. He was at about 385 when I shot him. It also didn't help I had my cousin behind me telling me he was big enough.

I also posted a video in the deer forum of the day after in the same clear cut....came across a couple nice blacktail bucks.
Feel free to rip me apart.....it's all part of the game.

Enjoy

Cool footage and a great shot.  I think we have all misjudged bears, they are tough to judge.  I even misjudged the distance on a bear once because of his size.  Shot under him.  When I saw his tracks I realized how big he was and why I thought he was closer...

Ya, he hit the dirt pretty hard then fell into that root hole from that down tree. Best breakfast sausage you can imagine

Nice shot!!

I will admit to shooting one that was less that 150lbs on time. I went into a thicket after a big one. A bear stood up and all I could see was his chest, I knew it was now or never. I was sure there was only one. I shot. He fell like a ton of bricks. 30 seconds later I  heard crashing and out came the bear I went in after about 300 yards away.  :bash: Oh well, It was a cool cinnamon that I shot.

What caliber did you use,  were you using a treestand, or on the ground :hello:

Seth30- I'm shooting a 7mm rem mag.... with Winchester xps 160 grain bullets. I was on the ground.

D-rock425- Right on man, it seems likes its always real hard to get the perfect video. Sure would be nice to have a full time camera man.  :chuckle:

Finally got a chance to check out this video.  Great job!  I definitely understand what it is like to misjudge the size of a bear, no shame in that.  You can tell by looking at him that he is small, particularly if you pay attention to the size of his ears and the length of his neck.

All the same, congrats on a bear!  Better than I did last year.  Everyone shoots a dink now and then.  All it does is improve the quality of meat!

Nothing tougher than judging a bear at a distance and without anything of known size around it to use as a comparison in my mind.

Thanks for posting, it has inspired me to work on getting a video camera for my hunting pack with a small tri-pod.

Thanks again guys for the replies! I don't have any pictures of this bear on my computer. I need to see if I can find the memory card and get them on here.

I'll keep that in mind, I might be getting ahold of you when things get closer  :chuckle:

Good luck to everyone who drew spring bear tags, maybe this will give a little motivation. Shoot one bigger than this guy. Be safe and have fun! Make sure to identify your target too.
