The are out in force. Saturday we found 11 ticks on 2 of us :yike:. Just a heads up
-
This going to be a scary year hunting
-
Had a nice break from them for the last two years, but couldn't get into my favorite place due to snow.
-
Sneakyjake,
I don't no how high you hunt, but the snow line is about 3100 to 3500 rite in there in my area. Ya with this early snow melt and early spring they are going to be heavy.
-
11? I found 11 having a party on my neck at one time. :bash: I think I picked about 80-100 by the end of my walk on Saturday. No joke. No inflation eather. It was at least 80. I peeled my shirt off twice during the day and cancelled the tick party. :yike: :yike:
They are worse than i have ever seen.
-
Our base is around 2200 and the peak is 4000. We have been locked out of my favorite area for the last two years like everyone else. The birds get pretty wild in this weather. It is gonna be fun, better get my boots greased.

:cryriver: I hate ticks... It makes me want to go hunting in one of these.. :con:... I flicked 19 off me in one day and one off my balls, I dam near passed out.. I thought my balls were going to fall off for 3 months.. :ACRY: But god willing  their still dangling!! :llam: Get tick spray!!
-
I arrowed a doe near Snoqualmie one time. I looked at her belly and thought - 'hmmm, I've never seen dark patches on the belly of a deer before'. Since she was only a yearling, I threw her on my shoulders.
I walked about 70 yards and realized the dark patches were hordes of tick mites. It looked like millions of them once I got out in the open away from the dark timber and had light enough to see.
I picked ticks off for the rest of the day. I burned her hide after skinning her.
At least it still isn't as bad as places like Oklahoma.
-
ive gotten used to them, still i take alota precaution because as stated above there are some places where a man doesnt want ticks any where near :chuckle:
-
I always get 3 or more cans of tick spray and hit all the openings especially ... hats, facemasks, gloves, shirts, pants, boots, etc ... never had a problem since and don't ever want to ....
:twocents:
-
I used to hunt in fleece camo bibbs and always seemed to pick up a bunch of them-when I quit wearing the fleece I did'nt have near the problem. Also started wearing nice, snug gators and and spraying well-seemed to help a lot. Personally I think there was something about the flecce that attracted them, but only a guess
-
:chuckle: :chuckle:
-
:puke:
-
Thats just disgusting. Glad I am stuck on the soccerfield and can't shed hunt. LOL
-
:yike: MAKES ME ALL ITCHY JUST READING THESE POSTS. I NEVER HAD TO PICK TICKS OFF OF MYSELF BEFORE, :IBCOOL: BUT FLICKED SEVERAL OFF, PICKES LOADS OF THEM OFF MY DOG THOUGH.
-
But this stuff and spray the crap out of your clothing.

-
Damn, that picture just about made me sick. Yuk. I hate the little *censored*s. We used to get covered with them turkey hunting in Missouri. I too started using gators and spraying the crap out of my boots and lower legs. Definitely helps.
-
Thanks yelp, thats what I wated to see rite befor dinner
-
Is this bad? LOL :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
I tuck everything in! Pants in your socks, shirts in your pants and cuffs in your gloves. And if I think I feel something crawlin' I look!If you don't you'll wish you did.100% deet doesn't even stop 'em.But you have to admit that turkey hunting is pretty much making yourself tick bait. :bdid:... :dunno:
-
Yelp I hope that last one you poste,d was on a dog, because a quick glance sure looks like it's on someone's head :yike:
-
You know its bad when you have three testicles...LOL :chuckle:
Or your skin tag has legs. :chuckle:
-
here is 4 more we pulled out of mojo on our last shed trip, ol 509er took the pic just for stickslinger
-
Just as Im getting geared up and excited for Turkey hunting, you guys go and post this............. :bash: I can't stop scratching my head now and I'm inside!
-
Thanks for the heads up on the number of ticks in the woods this year. I agree that the last two years we have been spoiled by the lack of them. My first year turkey hunting we did not spray our clothes or have any repellant on. On the way home the inside of my truck was crawling with them. My Nephew Dakota Dave has thick hair and ended up with 6 of them embedded on his head! :yike:
Just another reason for newbies to avoid the turkey woods this spring and take up golfing!!!!! :bdid:
-
Yep, everyone stay home, no turkey hunting, no more shed hunting. :chuckle:
Every time I hear the work tick I start itching.
-
Yep, all you guy and gal turkey chasers ....... just hunt Easterns in tick-free Western WA this year and you will have nothing to worry about!! :P You also probably won't have to worry about having your bird(s) checked by the WDFW. Just look at the historical harvest numbers for the wetside!
-
Turkeys eat insects. This is why we let the ticks crawl all over us, to better our odds at having a flock come in... Sometimes you need to sacrifice for the hunt...
-
it's official, the ticks are gone!!!
Wastickslinger walked through the woods and took every one of them with him :chuckle:
-

But what if you got to take a piss? :dunno: Thats when the vampire latched on to my balls! :'(.. I asked my buddy what do i do, he said yank it out.. Thank god , it just latched on or it would have been ugly!! I would have been doing this to my balls :cue:... :cryriver:.. Tuck your clothes in is the only advise i have.. and Tick spray..

Not funny. Now you know why I hate those things. They love me. I gotta find a repellant that works.
-
Here you go wastickslinger, perfect stuff. Important though, hang your clothes on a line and stay upwind, spray your clothes down and let the stuff dry, spray your boots and let the stuff dry. Your good to go for up to six weeks, doesn't repell ticks it flat out kills them.

Seriously I need that!! Have you tried it? I am ordering some today. I might even pay the extra to overnight it. :chuckle:
-
I used it for years in the military, it is very effective, but very bad if you use it on your skin. Don't breath it in and don't put it on your skin. And don't put your clothes on while it is still wet. It's not like you normall Deep Woods off stuff. Spray your Hat, socks, pants, shirt and boots and your very well protected.
-
I have used this stuff for years and its great (either spray bottle or cans) ... make sure that all opens at least get covered ... under hat brims, face masks, shirt collars, shirt cuffs, down the button area opening, glove cuffs, pants & shirt waist areas, pant cuffs, pants zipper area, boots ... basically any area the bloodsuckers can get into, under, etc. !

Less ticks maybe but the west side is definitely not tick-free! I wish.. Dog got one next to his eye a couple months back. This whole thread has me itching and I'm sitting inside.. Yuck!

works pretty good for me, i use that than bug spray before i head out. that and wearing clothes that they dont stick too like fleece and suede
-
Anyone know if a thermacell has any effect on them? Or is it more for the winged bloodsuckers. I know it works well on skeeters and no seeums
-
Really? Worse than last year? I was in the SE in late April/early May and would pull at least a dozen off me everyday. It got to where I couldn't sleep because I would swear I felt one crawling on me somewhere. Half the time I was right.
I've already picked off a few scouting on the west side this year.

Back in "93 up in the Tucannon I lost 2 pints of blood to one of them critters. I thought the lump was a hemmroid and then I saw the legs wiggling! :yike: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: I took my camo glove...LOL :chuckle:
-
OMG, I just about lost my lunch :puke: I am going to order two bottles of that stuff.

I don't think so..but I have mine and I use it from time to time..Nothing beats underarmour and permerithrin spray..It kicks butt. Lasts for 2 weeks.
-
You can buy permethrin from your local feed store and then mix the stuff up yourself.
-
I hunted a mile by mile patch of State land out by Devils Gap, walked in 1 mile, walked over 1 mile then out one mile. Didn't get any gobbles so I left. Didn't do a tick check because I wasn't there long and I was parked out in the open. I jumped in my truck and saw a tick on my leg. So I jumped out and found 27 ticks on me. :yike:

Iread a post on here last year one of the guys posted, guy claimed he had one IN his ear latched on :yike: had to go to the hospital and have it removed. Every time I see a tick or hear a tick story since then I think about that story :o Who is the Tick IN the ear guy?
-
Yea....that was me.
It was attached to my eardrum.
The worst part wasn't the tick..... or the hypodermic in the ear...but when the anesthesia was wearing off...that was some serious pain!
I despise them! :mgun2:

No... I had my friend hold a mirror...LOL We then tied a rope around it and he pulled it off... :chuckle: :chuckle:

So once that bug spray drys it cant hurt you anymore? It seems like if you sweat through your clothes the spray would end up getting on your skin or even if you wipe your face or something. Any problems with this situation?
-
jager- Your forever in my thoughts, MAN I think Im gonna make some "ear nets" out of an old face mask. :chuckle:

If you take your dogs out in the field, you should put that stuff down their backs so if the ticks bite them the ticks die. I think it is the same stuff that you can put on them for fleas.
I still have a lump on the back of my head at the hairline where my mom was trying to get a tick out by using a match to heat it so it would back away. She burned up the tick but it left its head in there....
-
Buddy and I did some hiking around in the foothills around Dayton this weekend. We each easily pulled 80 ticks off on one little hike this morning! We thought we had them all off. On the drive home he found 2 more on him and I had one trying to drop on me from the roof of my truck....Damn near ran off the road trying to get that little *censored* out of the truck. My skin is still crawling.

its funny to consider the torrential weather, waves, currents, etc I'd take a boat in for duck hunting... and consider the big game that we see in the wilderness while chasing turkeys. Sleeping among bears, wolves, pissed off Meese, etc... And yet these tiny little critters bug us more than anything. this thread made me throw up a little in my mouth :chuckle:
Ticks are icky.

Did you say Meece?.. :chuckle: I love it, is that moose plural?

of course it is, what do you call them? mooses? that's rediculous :P

We were shocked this last fall when our Rooseys were covered in ticks. My boyfriend caped his bull and sold the cape in exchange/partial payment for a euro mount... and when we got to the shop there was over a hundred ticks crawling on the hide and in the sack.. so much for a tick-free elk season!
-
Don't wait until you get home to deal with them...or else.. :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
thats it I'm going fishing this year.

I've pulled two ticks off my dog in the last couple of weeks and we've only been around home. This isn't normal. Very seldom have my dogs picked up ticks from this side of the mountains. I'm afraid it's going to be a terrible year for ticks even over here. I'm curious to see how covered in ticks the deer and elk are going to be this fall.
I still have a lump on the back of my head at the hairline where my mom was trying to get a tick out by using a match to heat it so it would back away. She burned up the tick but it left its head in there....
That seems like a hard way to get a tick out. I just grab them with tweezers and pull slowly. Course I've never had to pull one out of myself, only my dogs. I'm thinking this might be the year though. :o

I thought about doing some turkey hunting this year, but this makes the decision easy. No way am I going turkey hunting! Hunting turkeys involves too much time sitting still and giving them time to dig in. Not gonna do it. Course bear hunting may be just as bad. :dunno:

That's the best method of extraction. Just make sure you get them by the head with the tweezers or as close to it as you can. Burning them off causes them to regurgitate part of their digested meal/ some sort of fliud back into your bite and can cause problems. Same with pinching them with the tweezers too far from the head or treating them with oils/chemicals to drown them like I've heard happens sometimes.
-
ticks ssuck lol i get an eary feelin and wanna scracth all day after seein one lol, one trip shed huntin bout a month ago resulted in a buddy who found two ticks on him and six or eight on his dog and sero for me :) :tung: thank u 100% deet

I don't think my mom was planning on actually burning it, just heat it to get it to back away. That was pretty standard 35+ years ago when this happened. :chuckle:
There are little tools like one called "ticked off". I bought a couple of these two years ago after getting into ticks down by White Salmon. Did not have to worry about it last year due to all the snow....
-
I didn't read the whole thing, but under armour or a similar underlayment goes a long ways to keeping them off the majority of your body. I brought a few home to bed with me and the wife was none to happy when we would be reading in bed and a tick would start crawling on her arm. :chuckle:

That's how my mother tended to a couple I ended up with on my scalp 15ish years ago as well. Even up to a few years ago in CPR and First Aid courses they would teach this as an acceptable method. These past two refreshers had been the first I had heard of burning being such a negative method.
-
couple weeks ago i was sighting in my bow in the white pass area. only went under one tree and through the brush to find a couple lost arrows... didnt think of nothing of it. went to bed got ready for work. had a meeting.. was sitting there and just kinda glanced down at the sweater i was wearing the night before and had one of them lil fockers crawlin on me like WTF! totally didnt expect it, was bout to flip durring the meeting but instead went to the bath n flushed him down the toilet. was runnin late so didnt do my morning shower. striped down in the work bath and checked myself and didnt find no others.
-
Bluebulls takes them home and starts his own tick farm from what i heard. :bdid: That is why I strip down at the truck my friend. If you ever see a pale white guy in his skibs beside the road its just me doing a quick tick check. I have even done it on the hillside before. Quick strip down. Did I ever mention that I really dont like those things.
