Title: how many predator caller's do we have here
Post by: bearmanric on May 15, 2007, 08:33:04 PM: i live for calling. i'll be spending a month at bear camp. off and on. going to do alot more coyote calling. really enjoy it. went to Idaho and Arizona last year got spoiled. what call's doe's everyone like i use my own and other custom's. if you guy's have any question about calling just let me know. I bear hunt same area as Riverswild. except i move around to near by unit's. get's crowded were we hunt. he know's alot on calling two.going to try getting a bear and coyote's this year with a bow. Post by: Machias on May 15, 2007, 11:01:18 PM: I do alot of calling, bear, lions bobs and yotes. I have had alot of luck with the Circe 3 in 1 call. Love calling yotes and bobs at night. Big Red saucers come bouncing in on you :):)

As Rick mentioned, I love to call bears. I also call a little for coyotes (tough on the coast) and bobcats and I am always waiting on a cougar.

Post by: boneaddict on May 16, 2007, 06:02:20 AM: I'm not the best, but give it a whirl every now and then. I got the fox this year, that was one goal, the next goal is a cougar. I am much better with the hooved animals, but practice makes...well not perfect but better.

i killed a red fox while deer hunting back home in upstate new york and pretty much ruined it with the '06, but gave it to a taxi to use as a display piece in his shop and he fixed him up pretty good.
have not seen a fox in wa.

Post by: bearmanric on May 16, 2007, 10:26:58 AM: i've only seen around 8 foxe's. seen several by satsop and Chehalis valley. two in the upper Wynoochee valley. and and couple around the skookumchuck valley. seem to be around farm area's.this year wnen i go to Idaho hunting going to get the tag were i can hunt fox and bobcat. seen a foox that had black in it 2 yr's ago no tag tho. Moved up here in 93 and want to start calling again with my grown son, but not familiar with the area (need help there). Use an old weems all call and the Crit-R-Call. Never had to much luck with electronic calls....

Will hunt mostly with camera, but some bowhunting, so can hunt some pretty tight areas. Would like to find some moderatly brushy canyons. Someone suggested the Snake river breaks, where may that be?

Post by: jackelope on May 21, 2007, 09:10:48 AM: bearbait...lots of yotes on the snake river breaks...that'd be a couple hours south of you. problem there is finding land to access, but the mention of coyote or lion shooting should come across good to the farmers down there. they don't like all the yotes, especially this time of year with fresh calves on the ground.

Post by: jackelope on May 21, 2007, 09:43:09 AM: along the snake river. no where specific, just the lands that border the river. a lot of people who hunt there will access it by boat, but if you can find a landowner, maybe feel free to hunt land, you'd be golden.
it would be about a 2 hour drive from the spokane area south on 195 to around clarkston, wa.
you definitely don't have to hunt the snake river to find coyotes. they are everywhere.

Post by: Fletch on May 24, 2007, 03:09:05 PM: I spend some time calling in the winter months...Ive never had anything come in that I know of other than coyotes. Have been doing some spot lighting this last winter too. There is alot of ground to drive and spot light out here.

What you could try, is to save some calling sounds to your computer, and if you can't practice at home copy them to a format you can use in your truck.
Record them like a foreign language tape, let the sound play a series, then mimic it.

Using a predator call, or most any game call, is like using a musical instrument.
It's just gonna take time to learn, and nobody can "give you" that talent.

More than anything though, I believe, the sound you make isn't really that important.
If you sound like something dying, or something mad, or just plain something interesting, there's a chance animals are going to come to check it out.
Hopefully it'll be the animal you're trying to call.

What calls are you using, and what are you having trouble with?

I agree 100%.
I have been chastized on a few sites for stating this, usually by callmakers.

There are only about a dozen "enclosed reeds" from which most predator and hog calls are made from.
Many of the same sounds, can be made, and will be just as effective, no matter what the call was originally marketed for.

I have a Quaker Boy wood duck call, and a Carlton's Lonesome Cow elk call, that are among my very favorite predator calls.
While they will make good duck and elk sounds respectively, they both also make many good predator calling sounds.

A very famous call maker and caller says "Sit with your back against some cover, and blow a call, any call, and if predators are around to hear it, chances are they'll come to see what all the ruckass is about."

The best teachers there are, are out in the woods, running and flying around.
You'll know when jays and crows, hawks, and deer, start showing up, you're doing it right.

If you really want to find success, you just have to keep trying.

Post by: tlbradford on August 17, 2007, 04:14:58 PM: Just to play devil's advocate a little bit... The more sounds you are capable of reproducing will help you in several situations. These include:
1) Coyotes that have been "educated" to distress sounds by a missed shot, a shot that took out one of multiple coyotes, or heavily called coyotes on public land.
2) A coyote that you have visually spotted that shows disinterest to your initial calling.
3) Relocating and recalling to a coyote that has come in and "busted you" usually by sight. Recalling a coyote that has winded you is rare.

The ability to reproduce a wide variety of sounds will hopefully enable you to find the sound that will make them curious enough to come have a look.

With bear, I don't think the sound is as important. It is rare that they ever hear a call. I can't speak to cougars, since I have never knowingly called one in.

I sorta called in a coon last winter( long story with uneventful ending) anyone here thats ever needs a pard on a calling trip for cats or bears Id be interested JB

I'm a recently addicted predator caller. Probably 4 years. Before that I was just off and on, opportunistic while hunting other stuff. (Hunted all kinds of game since my single digets.)

Been a crafter of one bent or another forever, so I started making calls. Lots of fun!

'06 - '07... Called several bobcats, got 3. Called in 2 Cougars (but never got a shot.) I had real good luck calling coyotes anywhere but home here in the rainshadow and rainforest! Probably 1 for 4 in Arizona, and I was close to 1 for 2 on the dry side. I only called 2 here on the Peninsula in dozens of stands, no shots in shotgun range, which is what I was carrying.
