I had big plans for both deer and elk but since I am starting a new job on Monday I probably won't be doing much if any hunting. :(

I'm always jonesin' for elk camp and another season, from the day the last one ends.
I usually see elk a few times a week, which is great but I really look forward to the next challenge and the opportunity it brings to bust a monster.
My first bull was my biggest so far 6X6.....can't wait to get out there again

Congrats on the new job.... Drooling for Deer myself. Elk's a bit much to haul out myself, too little freezer space...

I can't wait, counting down the days! I have been out in the woods the last 3 weeks,it is keeping my nerves at ease for now. Filming them is a good way to past the time.

im definitely getting the itch. im really hoping to spend a good amount of time scouting and hunting this year for elk.
-
I have been looking forward to elk hunting since last season ended. I am getting into bowhunting and must say I am addicted. My pops and I put in to hunt Montana this year but even if we don't get drawn I know I will be chasing elk around here. There is just something special about hearing a bull scream through the early morning air that makes ya feel alive!
-
I am always ready. I haven't had much time to prep yet with my 8 week old daughter at home but I will get there. I have a list (and I am I checking it twice) of the things I need to do.
-
im definitely getting the itch.
"Elkpiss" is getting a woody, and you're "getting the itch?" Bad combination. Sounds like it's worse than we thought.

This was my first year elk hunting. I think I did ok. I was invited by my buddy to come up to Elk camp. Been the same guys for 10 plus years. It was the most fun I'd ever had out hunting. I was invited back,so thats a good thing. I can't wait for next year. Cool thing is, the same group of guys get together for deer hunting. Great times, Great friends, Great stories.

-
:hello: My dad drew Multi season Elk with 14 pionts, He said he has a woody too now!! :yike:..
-
Do you see a benefit in having 14 elk points and the multi-season permit? Only advantage I see is the ability to apply for both east and westside permits. Just curious what is giving your dad a "woody."
-
I moved to the PNW to hunt elk...basically no other reason!
I killed my first bull like 4 days into bow the first season I lived here,(2007) ,,so 4 days of elk...
I was in Iraq fall 2008
I killed my 2nd elk about an hr into opening morning of bow 2009... Soooo, I moved here July 2007 to elk hunt and Ive had 5 days of it since :'(
I tell ya what was AWESOME!!! I spent a week tagging along with Tmike on his lil Naches tag hunt and DAMN...we were covered up in bulls...we were calling em in from 3 directions at one damn time...on multiple occasions!! now...forget woody...I had to resort to self abuse mid-buggle!!
I cant freakin wait til bow elk 2010 -
PS- Im just back from a bow for pig trip and got to test all my gear..man am I happy with those Shuttle T locks (Chris Titan turned me onto them and I cant thank him enough) they eat regular old blades for breakfast like hitting a soda can with a sledge hammer!

-If I had 14 Bonus pts and just drew multi season I would be one happy camper right now! But I didnt :'(

Why?
It seems to me that if 14 points help you to draw a "quality" bull permit, the multiple permit that cost $180 will be wasted. No?
-
Your joking right :dunno: Being able to hunt Bulls here and having the chance to hunt a monster Rocky Mt Bull wouldnt be getting you pumped! Oh I forgot you like to shoot cows :P

No. Definitely not wasted. You can apply for east side bull permits and hunt west side if you don't get drawn. Seems like a good way to use your 14 points to me. Sure is better than drawing something on the west side with those 14 points, or hunting spikes until you draw on the east side...
-
Sure. But I wouldn't want to spend the $180 on a multiple season permit in the same year I drew a "once-in-a-lifetime" bull permit. The multi-season just allows you to hunt general seasons that anybody and everybody can hunt. With a very limited bull elk permit in hand, I wouldn't even want to waste any time with the general seasons that year. This is, of course, assuming that the special permit hunt is one that is practically guaranteed success if you put the time and effort into it.

I guess I and others above just see it differently then you do. I personally wouldn't want to waste 14 points on a west side tag, and I wouldn't want put in for east side tags for however many years it takes to draw one because all the years you don't get drawn you have to hunt spikes. $180 would be a small price to me to have my cake and eat it too. I think of it this way: assuming I draw both the multi-season and the draw tag, that $180 just saved me 14 years of spike hunting with a million other spike hunters.
-
OK, I understand now. It gives you the ability to hunt bulls on the westside and still apply for east side bull permits. Makes sense. I hadn't really thought of it in that way since I am done applying for bull permits. Or I should say WAS done applying for them, until the new permit system this year, will now let me apply for both bulls and cows, so of course I will now be putting in for everything.
-
cant wait i have been out almost every weekend just looking. i cant wait for september!!

Im not quite the expert with the old point system like you are there Bobcat, but ya we are aware of being able to hunt both sides with that.. :o , but just having a bunch of points kind gives me a woody!! Granit we never draw *censored*, but what the hell a guys can hope!! I think my whole Fam is maxed out in every category... :yike: Hey Bobcat, whats better 3 points or 14, just curious if their is any advatages im not aware of with that equation? :chuckle: :hello:.. Just Kiddin Bobcat!!
:hello: Hey WSU, You got the right idea!! ;)!!
-
Wife finally drew something too, she got her Multi season elk tag !! I Know where she is putting in for ;) Definately Archery, and definatle a big bull tag :P
Is it elk season yet ???
-
I'm itching to get into the woods, been there a hundred times already, can't get in too far yet, but as for a woody, no, I'm a female, sorry,lol....
-
i dont think its open to draw or maybe..but it would be a tough call if i had enough points to "pick" my area for a special permit...blues sound good but it would be a tough call for the quinalt area where BTKR took his rosey...that thing is a damn BEAST :yike:
and he says that was the little one he shot after too many missed chances at a "big in" WTF :dunno:
if u held that rosey of BTKRs in ur hand...youd but whacking to the word Quinalt...I know I do :yike: :bdid: :hello:

My old man and I are actually going on a 9 day elk hunt in Western Montana from sept 24th - oct 3rd. I can't wait to go and we too will be holding out for a good bull. Our goal is to both shoot something over 300 inches but hell, I will be happy just being out chasing the screaming bulls around for a week plus!

Annual application for Washington draws and my usual trip to New Mexico.

I've been watching all the hunting shows on the outdoor channel and have been motivated to get into bowhunting and elk. I've decided that this summer I'm going to get a bow, learn to shoot it well AND do some scouting for Elk. I don't know much about either in the Spokane area but from the WDFW website it looks like the Turnbull area would be a good place for me to start. I bagged my first deer last year with a Rem 700 in .270. It was a nice 4x4 and dropped like a rock with my own handloaded 140 gn softpoint. I'd really like to get an elk this year, be it with a bow or rifle. Any tips on learning to shoot a bow, hunting elk or a good area to hunt them in? I'm not asking anyone to give up their favorite hunting spot or anything but a nudge in the right direction would really help a newbie out! Thanks in advance for any tips you guys throw my way!
-
The Turnbull Wildlife Refuge is not open to hunting. They are having some special hunts this year by permit only, for the first time ever. But you'd have to draw a permit and the chance of that is between slim and none. Since you're in Spokane you might try the northeast corner of the state, which is the only area east of the Cascade Mountains where you can kill any bull elk. The rest of the eastside is spike only. Success rates are very low up there due to relatively low numbers of elk scattered over a large area, but at least you are close enough to get some scouting in before the season. If you want to see more elk you could try any of the Yakima area GMU's. It would just be a little further to drive, but it would be easier to find elk. But also expect more comptetition from other hunters.
-
Thanks for the info bobcat. I just remembered I have a friend in the Chewelah area that says he has elk on his 20 acre property ALL the time. I'll have to check into what's legal there and talk him into letting me hunt there.
-
I've been watching all the hunting shows on the outdoor channel
You must be interested in hunting white tailed deer an turkeys than :chuckle:
-
Honestly Funkster, I like the woods so I'll get out and hunt anything I can given the opportunity. Only been turkey hunting once and didn't see a thing. I've only been out here for a little over a year and am not real familiar with the land and what areas are good for hunting the different species. I need to do some scouting and talk to some folks in the Spokane area that don't mind sharing tips.
-
Went out this past weekend and got into 4 different groups, saw about 65 elk, took me from 6 to midnight in about 2.2 seconds. :o
-
Went out for a couple of hours today in the Blues. Didn't see anything. 'coupla whities and a blue grouse, that was it...
-
Me to i hope ill find it
-
Were getting close fellas! Shwing!!!!
83 days till we leave for Oregon!!
:llam:
-
best I can do is a medium on till the draws are out
-
:yeah:
I'll start cutting firewood later this month though... and I'll start seeing them...and then it will start...
By August I'll be at a fever pitch, 15 cords of wood stacked at the house and still telling the wife "I'm headed up the mountain to cut some more wood! Might be a cold winter!!".. :P
-
ummm so I am not a dude  but still rather like seeing the elk and wish it was fall :yike: haven't even had summer yet and .... just wish I had more elk a little closer to home ......
-
:chuckle:

Im going up scouting in the William O Douglas today and tomorrow.
