Hey, everyone.. new to the board.
I am one of those super lucky people that got a spring bear tag first time entering. Pulled the skagit GMU 418.. any insight that anyone has as to what to expect in the timber lands would be really appreciated. Plan on being up there alot from April 15 - May 31.
Also.. has anyone received their hunt packets for this area? Really want to get my hands on it so I can start my scouting and plans!
Thanks!
-
no packet yet for me.
-
nope... hope tomorrow so I can narrow my scouting this weekend.
-
No packet yet for me either..
Hey, D-Rock425, You're pretty excited about your tag huh? I can tell.
I have the Monroe tag also. I think there's a couple guys from Lake Stevens with this tag.
-
Just so you all know...last year they gave out the keys only a few days before the hunt. So good luck with the scouting prior to that. Its locked up pretty tight up in that area.
Oh yeah, no packet for me today either. I'm guessing tomorrow.
-
I am not expecting my letter until Monday.
-
No keys til the 12th. If you are curious call Chris Hanky at 360 856 3500. He will tell you to come in with your permit and $100 for a deposit which will be returned when you bring your key back. Also if they have anymore problems this year it will be a done deal!!!! Be respectful up there and enjoy your hunt!!! Hope to see lots of pics!! Justin
-
Waiting on mine...I called and they said "soon look for it in the mail".....right figured that much
Finally pulled my backyard.......Monroe a ....about time...really looking forward to it!

Yeah I've been trying to get as much info as I can for this hunt. I have this whole week off from work so I've been on here a little more then normal too. I hope to get out and do some scouting tomarrow for a few hours in the morning.
-
I dont think I will be doing any scouting today it is nasty outside at my house.
-
I probably wont make it out today either...kids on spring break and we promised them we would go play in the snow....
But tomorrow I gotta go back up into the Lincoln unit to take some crappy pictures... :chuckle:
(some sign I found and thought was elk, but have been told it is bear).. :dunno:
I will post some pic's for the experts....

A second opinion? Ya don't trust me? :chuckle:

Wow!, 'cuz I saw about a dozen piles of this stuff in Lincoln, I guess I know where I'll be hunting in two weeks!!!
I'll go back and take some pictures !
This is your post from the other thread. Did you see a dozen piles all in one spot? If so, I would think that would be elk, not bear. But I'll be waiting for the pictures.

Bobcat..let's test that theory. Oh, wait. This must be bear because there are only ten piles in the pic. LOL
If I had a wider lens I could have gottten more.

OK, yeah just a theory. I've never seen that much bear crap all in one spot. I don't remember ever seeing more than one pile, maybe two, in one spot.

I only see that much in the spring and typically where a sow and cub are bedding/feeding on a regular basis.
-
Stik, post up the GPS coords and we'll go out there and see the sh!t for ourselves to see for sure if it is bear pelosi.
-
Was hoping for a packet in the mail yesterday. No go. :dunno: Now I gotta stay home and finish my own bathroom project :chuckle:
-
No packet yet for me either. I keep checking everyday in the mail.

I found some more today in a different location......
If I find a third area, I just might stear someone that direction......
I am still not convinced it is bear pelosi.......
If it is, there is going to be some good hunting in a couple weeks.....

Did you taste it? Should taste like bear roasted over a green grass fire. :chuckle:
If it were elk you would find elk tracks.

On a hard road, during these rains ?
both places are on the road, in between patches of reprod...
I am just trying not to get too excited, by being sceptical.....
I mean, if I found this much sign on one side road, and about 3 piles on a main line road, and was told by a Weyerhauser Employee where he saw some on the 6XX road,................
This place is loaded with bear (at least 3) and we are in for a good season.....(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbestsmileys.com%2Fexcited%2F3.gif&hash=f7452b3dd4c26494eef822cf0158dda1491f7727)

mail came to today no packet yet :bash:

Got my permit card today. Mark
-
Got the permit but no packet!
-
Got my permit and my letter from hancock with a map.
-
Got my permit and my letter from hancock with a map.
Yup, looks like the south block is the open area.
-
Got my permit today....
On it, it says..
Season: Open on days designated by Weyerhauser between APRIL 15 - JUNE 15
Boundary : That portion of GMU 501 that is designated as the hunt area by Weyerhauser Company
:dunno:
And the rest of the normal B.S......
No map or other information at this time.................
-
So it IS just Weyerhaeuser that is open? So apparently you are supposed to contact Weyerhaueser for that information? Or maybe it is just all Weyerhaeuser land that is normally open for public access? Kind of glad I didn't apply for it now.
-
The two things I noticed are , OPEN ON DAYS DESIGNATED BY...
And the extra 2 weeks..... :dunno:
I dont care about the rest, as long as the WH property I have been scouting is in the area designated as....... :dunno:
-
Got my Permit today too! No packet though.. was hoping to talk with you all about what the packet says.. at least for the North Skagit area.
-
Got my permit and my letter from hancock with a map today .

Yup, looks like the south block is the open area.
I have never been in Kapowsin. So have no idea what to exspect or where to go. Should be interesting.
-
Many years ago (before Hancock) there used to be a REALLY big one that hung around the south end of the lake...
The guy at the store complained about it getting into his compost pile, and we ran into it in the orchard while we were down fishing the creek in August.
That was when I bought my first bear tag....
Never had a chance for a bear after that. :bash:
-
As stick posted above....
I got my permit in the mail without any timberland contact info. In the past we would get a letter that explained who and how to contact the timber company as well as a permit at the same time. This permit is like the old days when you got your permit and just hunted the unit listed.
The perplexing part to me (unless we are going to get a letter from the timber company) is the verbage under Season and Boundary.
Season: Open on days designated by Weyerhaeuser between APR 15 - JUNE 15
Boundary: That portion of GMU 501 that is designated as the hunt area by Weyerhaeuser Company.
Why can't F&W provide a phone number or contact info? :bash:
Is WeyCo going to shut us out on certain days? :bash:

BTKR, I think I would just call the Weyerhaeuser hotline (1-866-636-6531) and hunt whatever is open to access in the Lincoln unit. Apparently that is what they are saying with the permit you received. Which pretty much means all Weyerhaeuser land inside the Lincoln GMU.
By the way, I just got back from there, and found 3 big, steaming piles of bear crap. Well, slight exaggeration, maybe they weren't steaming, but one pile WAS really big! I'll post pictures later if I get a chance. I got GPS coordinates. :)
Oh, lots of snow up there, it started at about 1300 feet elevation, and up about 1800 and above there was a foot on the ground. Had to get out and lock in the hubs....

Yes, that would be my interpretation as well, but having drawn on both public and private land in the past and receiving a boundary description on both, I was kinda expecting more of the same on this one.
Thanks for the number and I will be expecting the coordinates soon......by pm of course. lol :chuckle:
-
Better yet, I'll go up with you and show you where it is...

That's what I was hopin' for. :IBCOOL:

If you get back up there and they are smashed beyond recognition, sorry... :chuckle:
After coming down out of the snow myself, I saw the other 3 that I didn't take pictures of, but as I stated before, If the ones I am finding are bear...(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fbestsmileys.com%2Fexcited%2F3.gif&hash=f7452b3dd4c26494eef822cf0158dda1491f7727)

-
Got my permit. Are we supposed to get a packet for hancock also?
-
1800-782-1493 hancock info line. you'll need to go to there office. but i think they contact you first.
-
Nothing today, permit the other day, no info packet yet.
-
got the permit today
-
My buddy got his Kapowsin packet today including pass and map. Regarding guests it says that he can have family members, other spring bear tag holders, and annual pass holders. It seems at first read that I may not be able to accompany him on the hunt. Does anybody know if that is indeed the case?
If it is then that would suck. He doesn't have any family in area and nobody with an annual pass either. I obviously don't expect to hunt, but would like to accompany and help glass, scout, etc. He has a call in to them but hasn't heard back yet. Thought I would see what you guys think.
-
no you cant go in with him. thats the rules, and i find myself saying again and again. research the tags you put in for!!!!

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. It's really hard to prove that you aren't brother-in-laws.
-
Maybe get your dad to adopt him. ;)

family in there is children under 18 or your wife, and they all have to be listed on your permit when you buy it. my dad buys a permit every year so we can both go in there and hunt. bro in laws dont count. and if ya brake the rules your out i like the rules. it keeps guys from buying the permit. maybe it will keep guys from putting in for the spring hunt too and up my odds every year
-
The only way it will keep people from putting in is if there is factual information posted about the access permit and Hancock's processes.
-
no you cant go in with him. thats the rules, and i find myself saying again and again. research the tags you put in for!!!!
Settle down there cheetah. Now I'm sure that every hunt you have ever done went off without a hitch, and I'm equally sure that you were born with the arcane knowledge of Washington game laws, but us mere mortals sometimes run into bumps. We are certainly discovering things as we go, but that does NOT mean that we won't do the best we can to get the most out of the hunt. We have the time, the means, and the dedication. So you can come down off your pedastal now.
-
guess ill rephrase my response since it got deleted. it is mentioned in the regs that hunters interested in the spring Bear hunt in kapowsin should contact Hancock before applying. I'm not just making stuff up the information is right there :dunno:
-
You're absolutely right, and thank you for being there to set everyone straight. Your input is invaluable.

any time

I sure wish someone would get out and kill something....
This isn't the only post recently that seems to be deteriorating due to people getting a little "testy",,..
Come on guys, it's about having a good time :brew:, and enjoying the outdoors, not :boxin:

I talked to the game department yesterday afternoon. They were going to send the packets out probably today. They were surprised the permits were already received since they come from a "subcontractor". We should get them soon. The gal I spoke to stated there was a chance they might even get them out yesterday but probably today.

not meaning to be testy, i just don't understand all the guys that put in for these hunts and then when they draw them they are just blown away at what they entail. if your taking the time to apply and planing on taking the time to hunt then why not take the time to inform yourself about the tag if you don't know any thing about it, guys dont do it and then the tag goes to waste cuz they dont hunt it. that's all, just seeing it allot. really im fine with guys not hunting the kapowsin tag as long as i have one, more for me. but i know a lot of guys that didnt draw it that would go after that tag pretty hard
-
I wasn't necessarily referring to you, I have been noticing it on a lot of posts lately...
but I see your point,
however with the odds of drawing what they are one or two guys that don't use their tags is not really going to influence it that much..I mean it's like saying if someone doesn't buy a lottery ticket, I would have won....
-
bonecrusher,
You're assuming that because people don't have ALL of the information that they will not hunt. Making statements about people you don't know based on assumptions is.... less than helpful. I may have reacted poorly this morning since I hadn't had my second cup of coffee yet, but as annoyed as you are about people being informed I am equally annoyed by un-necessary and arrogant comments.
We may not have ever guessed that guests would be limited to family (I still think that's odd), but I assure you that we are excited to get everything we can out of this opportunity.

So how would you suggest to "inform" oneself when the permit areas are new or to keep abreast of changes on the old units? You can't get a straight answer from F&W and good luck getting ahold of anyone with permit knowledge with the timber companies.
-
ive had pretty good luck when i call a timber company. it just takes a little persistance. heck ive even talked to real live people at some of um.

I have called, written e-mails, even talked to workers in the field....
I don't care anymore what info they send us, I will be hunting on Weyerhauser land for Bear and Turkeys from Highway 6 north, From Elk Creek at Doty and the 7000 Mainline East, Garrard Creek south to Lincoln Creek and west of Bunker Creek, unless told otherwise....
I already have a couple good spots, and am going to look at a couple more tommorrow, Saturday, and Sunday...(mon, tues, wed, also) and THURSDAY ! :archer:

got permit on thursday and letter in the mail on friday.

Lucky you.

Got my permit, but no packet from Hancock. :dunno: no map showing boundary for bear. Is it same as last few years?
