I am looking for a break barrel pellet gun 1000fps+ I have looked at the crosman quest and a couple others around $100 any suggestions? I need to take care of some birds that are eying my garden.
Thanks
-
Also there are some refurbished remington and ruger guns for under $100 thoughts?
-
It's been a while since I've researched air rifles. But I know you can't get anything worth having for $100. The minimum price for anything even halfway decent I'd say is $200. Get up to about $350 and then you're getting into an air rifle that you'll want to keep and use for years. I'd look first at RWS.
-
Can't remember if mine was $500 or $800. Gamo, and that thing is brutally lethal
-
Actually if you want something cheap, look here:
http://www.compasseco.com/tech-force-tech-force-caliber-rifles-c-1_34_182.html (http://www.compasseco.com/tech-force-tech-force-caliber-rifles-c-1_34_182.html)
The Tech Force air rifles are Chinese made, and are supposed to be ok for the money. There's a lot of information on that site too that you can read.

thats a little sheap for 1000+ you can get a good gamo for like 150.00 they are nice guns i sold mine awhile ago

I will look into the gamo, I just dont want to spend 200+ to shoot crows out of my garden, it makes my vegatables get very expensive :chuckle:

I like those compasseco guns, I have been looking into the Gamo and some of them are not to much $ and seems to be a highly recommended brand, my old crosman 2100 lasted me 0ver 20 years and killed lots of birds and quite a few racoons in the last few years, it just wont pump up anymore.
-
crossman quest would be a waste of money, even for $100 they do not last at all. i had two 4 of them, and i know several people that had a couple of them, longest one lasted was about 4 months, they're gaurgage. ears my father-in-law gave me an air rifle as a gift about 2 years ago, walther talon, magnum, in .22 cal. its a wierd brand, but very nice, its i big gun though, and kinda heavy, looks sort of like the gamo wisper, well it shoots .22 pellets at 1250 fps, yes i said 1250!! its insane, i shoot it all the time, i shot at least 6 or 7 thousand pellots through it, and its still just as powerful as the day i got it. my father in law bought three of them for $100 each. i'll try to find out where he got them to let you guys in on the scoop
-
I have a crossman break action that I have had for a while. It is a good gun as long as you keep the screws tight. It used to be at the 1000 fps mark. It may have dropped off slightly. My favorite and best crow, squirel gun is the RWS 59. Side cock, so you don't have any loss of accuracy. It used to put a .177 pellet through a 2x4.

I don't mean to throw cold water on anyone, but remember that air guns are not legal for hunting in Washington.

Ive had a RWS 34 for about 10 years and it is a great pellet rifle.

are they illegal for varmit controll arounf the yard? that all i use mine for.
-
RWS is a good brand, i have a benjamin and its deadly. some of the precharged rifles are wicked but more money.

I picked up a Gamo and couldn't shoot a tight group at 18 yards. They are cheap. Called Gamo and they said to make sure the front screw was tight or the barrel would not line up left to right. It also has issues lining up vertical. Get a fixed barrel bottom cock or side for best accuracy. Sold the Gamo.
-
cant hit the broad side of a barn after about 250 pellets through my gamo varmint hunter. It was wicked when i first got it, now it wont hold zero for more than about 15 shots
-Wildfire
-
Forgot to mention that the Gamo also seemed to be temperature sensative. If it got cold in the garage and I shot it the group, when it grouped would be off. When it warmed up it was back, close to it's intended mark. It was also good for about the first 150 shots. I purchased 5000 pellets, so I needed something reliable.
-
Well I hope I have better luck than some of you I just got a Gamo. After I got it sighted in it will group very good.

Not to just dig up and old thread but thought I would clarify this. They are legal to hunt small game in WA only requirement is a small game license even when shooting varmits in your yard. Also they are not a firearm as Ive see suggested here.

The 2010 regs state on page 66 that it is illegal to,
• Hunt game birds or game animals with
anything other than a firearm, a bow and
arrow, or by falconry.
Furthermore even small game and crows have seasons.
11. Prohibited firearms/hunting methods
It is illegal to:
• Hunt game birds with a shotgun capable
of holding more than three shells.
• Hunt game birds with a rifle or pistol,
except forest grouse.
• Hunt game birds or game animals with
anything other than a firearm, a bow and
arrow, or by falconry. Bullfrogs may only
be taken by angling, hand dip netting,
gigging, and bow and arrow.
• Hunt game animals or game birds with a
shotgun larger than 10 gauge.
• Hunt wildlife with a crossbow, except
in firearm restriction areas. However,
disabled hunter permittees in possession
of a crossbow special use permit may
hunt with a crossbow in any season that
allows archery equipment.
• Hunt wildlife with a fully automatic firearm.

The 2010 regs state on page 66 that it is illegal to,
Call F&G they will tell you otherwise and put in writing if you desire as will WSP regarding wether or not they are a firearm. You just have to obey the laws regarding season and the ARE legal. F&G phone guy says they plan on adding air guns to the regs possibly next year due to the amount of calls they get regarding legality.

The chinese training surplus air rifles are great too for about 50 bucks. Bought one at Duffle Bag a few years ago. Its rated right around 1000 and drops blue jays and crows no problem. I love it for a cheap airgun.

Go for it, Don. I tend to go by the WACs and RCWs. (And yes, even the enforcement officers I've spoken with say it is illegal. Maybe they're wrong also, but they write the citations).

(7) "Firearm" means a weapon or device from which a projectile or projectiles may be fired by an explosive such as gunpowder.

Yup air is not explosive thus why they are not a firearm and non regulated and why purchase age is only 16.

This would be the key sentence:
• Hunt game birds or game animals with
anything other than a firearm, a bow and
arrow, or by falconry.
So, since air rifles are NOT considered to be a firearm, according to the law, they are not legal to hunt game birds or game animals. Just like a sling shot is not legal for grouse. Another law that doesn't make sense but the law is the law.

There is a written rule or law that the F&G sites if you ask them whether or not you can use a air gun. Its not in the regs. I'll see if I can find my letter if not I'll get another.

I'm not doubting you Don. The laws aren't always exactly as they have them written in the regulation pamphlet. I'm just going by what I've read in the pamphlet, but as it says on page 9, it is only a summary of the actual WAC's. It would be great to see the actual law that applies to hunting with air rifles, if you can find it.

so if Air Guns/Rifles are NOT firearms, why did my brother in law get arrested for illegal discharge of a firearm in city limits? got handcuffed and all.

Probably because the police don't know all the laws either.........

For what it's worth, I emailed Sgt. Anderson of WDFW Enforcement in Olympia this afternoon. I asked him "are air guns illegal for hunting in Washington?"
His reply: "Hi Bob, Yes air rifles are illegal for hunting in WA."

lots of birds died round the farm from the old crossman :chuckle:
-
Yeah the Beaman has killed quite a few birds out of my orchard.
-
My Gamo is hell on starlings. Got mine cheap at Walmart.
-
There is a big difference between nuisance non game birds/animals or depredation vs. hunting game animals.
One surprise is that you are required to obtain a permit to kill robins during depredation. I think the permit was only good for 25 birds.
-
Robins? Depredation of what?

I just got off the phone with them. You must be more liked than me. I just got the normal auto reply stating we will get back to you within 5 days. I just talked to 5 different people at F&G enforcement from oly all the way over to district one. They all say the same and consulted each other. If the game is unregulated meaning no bag limit/managed or is a varmit like a rat or mole there is no weapons restriction but you need a license. All stated they would probably ticket if you were shooting coyote due to their larger size and lack of weapon power to make a clean kill. Sounds to me like they need to get their story straight.
The director of the olympia office states that although the regs state one thing there is no rcw to go along with the regulation thus is subject to interpretation lacking enforcement. They will have a letter on their stationary typed and printed for me to pick up clarifying the rule. I will ask if I can scan and post it online when I pick it up later this week or next.

Robins? Depredation of what?
Robins are hell on cherries. they will sit and take a peck out of most cherries in reach ruining many times what they consume.
You have to get a permit from the USDA. Can only guess that this is because the robin is a state bird down south.
-
I use a red-ryder-carbine-lever-action! On a more serious note, the RWS I used to have was incredibly accurate with enough power to through a 2x4, it had an adjustable trigger too. http://www.umarexusa.com/product/RWS-Model-34,13,43.htm (http://www.umarexusa.com/product/RWS-Model-34,13,43.htm)
It was probably the most fun gun I have ever owned.
-
Information received from the commission.
Crows are predatory birds not game birds and are not subject to the firearm restriction as are starlings. Eastern gray squirrels are not classified but are non native and are not subject to the restriction or RCW 77.15.140. Coyotes are not a game animal per Title 232 of the Washington administrative code are not subject to the firearm restriction they are however non classified and permission is given to hunt by the commission. Most Rabbit's are either a game animal, endangered or protected see title 232.
You are free to hunt with an air rifle any classified native species not listed in Title 232 as game or furbearing.
Don
-
I wonder about coyotes since you need a license to hunt them.
-
I wonder about coyotes since you need a license to hunt them.
They have to require a license just like crows irregardless. Hunting of any kind in the state of WA is a Recreational License Required Activity per RCW 77.32.010.
Don
-
So the bottom line is that some animals and birds can legally be hunted with an air rifle, but not most. I wonder how many enforcement officers know where those lines are? My guess is not many.
-
da ol benny just took out a starling moments ago
-
OK to kill "predatory birds" but not "game birds" with an air rifle. I guess that is the distinction.
-
I find the Info suspect as in maybe no one really knows the correct answer. I believe it would be interpreted on the spot and then again in court if there was a citation.
First thing I know from the regs is that there is a season on crows and none on starlings. Except depredation which there is even a clause in the federal protection of magpies.
I believe Oregon has airgun specific guidelines including caliber limits for game. This is what we need to see. There are airguns small or big enough for each species even for big game.
As it stands there is a lot of gray area, which usually ends up costing the hunter.
-
There's no reason air rifles shouldn't be legal for hunting. You can use a 25 caliber pistol for elk hunting.
Why not a 177 or 22 caliber air rifle for grouse or rabbits?
-
CA game regs say you can use .20 or better air rifle for Turkey. I don't see why you can't use a .20 or better for alot of the upland and small game. Most of the decent ones are slinging lead at 800fps or better.
-
As it stands there is a lot of gray area, which usually ends up costing the hunter.
They have to cite an rcw, wac or municode to issue the citation.
Don
-
Here is what I've learned, which may still be incorrect:
(a) It is not legal to hunt game birds or game animals in Washington with an air rifle.
(b) It is legal to hunt non game animals and non game birds (predatory birds) with an air rifle.
(c) The laws do not make complete sense, because many air rifles are quite capable.
(d) The laws are misunderstand by many, including a significant number of enforcement officers.
"Buyer beware".
