We drug this up in a net in Alaska, the Bering sea if I remember correctly. It was about 8 ft long, missing most of its (very small) scales, had thick rubber skin and the head was partially removed from the gill area. I know what they told us it was, but that name is also the name of another fish. So what do ya think?

Here is another strange fish. I caught this one in Dutch, in front of the Grand Aulutian. It looked like a cross between a bullhead/cabazon and a kelp greenling, but it was black with red motling and bubblegum blue inside the mouth as well as around the mouth.

Sorry for the blurry photo, it is a digital photo of an actuall photo.

Dang.....ugly lookin little snappers. I don't have a clue. That first one looks like something out of the deep blue.
-
1st one I'd guess to be Dorado/ Dolphin AKA Mahi Mahi -very rare for that area. 2nd I'd guess to be a Ling/ Cabby freak of nature...
-
No way on the mahi mahi, they are almost cute on the face, not that grotesque thing unless I am seeing that wrong. Different mouth completely.
-
Def. not mahi mahi. i've seen them up close and personal :)
i have no idea.
-
Cute?? :chuckle:
That's a face only a momma can love...

My only other guess is that it's a filleted 'but and Billy's jerking our chain.... ;)
-
D--hook one...you'll love their face. trust me.
-
I've et 'em before -good stuff :tung:
Can't be Mahi Mahi, the northernmost species doesn't get that big... OK, we're stumped, what the heck is it????
-
got a 58lb bull dorado in the sea of cortez in '98 along with 13 others from 10-30? or so lbs. hardest fighting fish lb for lb i've ever hooked.
yep i want to know what the heck they are too...that other fish looks like a gila monster with fins :dunno:

that other fish looks like a gila monster with fins
So true!
-
I have no clue....that's why I was asking! Though I did like the halibut joke.
The first fish...The observer from NMF told us it was a Hagfish. (I know there is another hagfish).
The little/soft scales were gray/silver. It was missing most of the scales. That little skull like head was supposed to angle down. It had a soft mouth almost the size of a baseball. You can see where the skin was peeling away near the head. The skin was like a wetsuit. Very thick and rubbery. It was not a flat fish, though it was narrow. The spine and belly areas were very thin with the middle being about 16 inches thick. From back to belly it was about 30 inches. The handle/tail area was so big you had to put two hands around it.
The little fish on the bottom....I have no idea.

So we have some answers over at iFish. It is a Ragfish.
Here is a link to the other thread and another pic of a ragfish.

So Billy were you a regular at the Elbow Room?
I've fished Bristol for reds but never the deep blue Bering. I am crazy but not nuts. hahahaha
(Every time some one bitches about the price of crab I remind them of the dead men that helped supply the meal.)
-
So true.....I love that deadliest catch show on discovery. Its probably hoolywooded, but still a good show to watch.
-
Gawd that's uglier than a chummer upriver... I don't miss deadliest catch ever, love that show.
-
Nope not a regular at the Elbow Room, but I spent a small fortune at the airport and liquor store... in Dutch..then got real spendy at the Bush Company....not good..
I don't miss Deadliest Catch either...I watch the re-runs as well.
-
Bush Company = Trouble :P
-
I'm on board with the Dealiest Catch as well. The wife and I set aside every Tuesday night to watch it. That show was great entertainment after my surgery when I was layed up and couldnt do anything but watch tv all day. I have a couple of cousins who fish for crab, cod and halibut in the Bering Sea. They tried to get me to do that when I was in my 20s but I chickened out.
-
deadliest catch addict here too...got it set to record on my DVR every week. watch it when i get time.
i got a buddy out of dutch right now on a fishing boat.
-
I guess that's the best thing to watch now that the Croc Hunter got the chop.
-
OK have we figgured out what the fish is on the bottom yet? I've had a few of the fish heads on taxidermy net going nuts trying to figgure out what the top one is. But no answeres on the bottom fish yet.
Do they eat those Ragfish? If I caught something like that I'd probably go ahead and throw the poll in the water just so i know that is is gone! LMAO
-
Bush Company = Trouble :P
Yep, two goons handcuffed me and escorted me out.....that is all I will say about that!
-
Michelle - Someone said it was a Kelp Greenling in spawning colors. Not sure really. Don't know what they do with the ragfish, but I know they live very deep.
