Title: Montana speed goat units?
Post by: carpsniperg2 on April 06, 2010, 02:32:55 PM
I have hunted Montana with a outfitter and got a huge goat. but am thinking on doing a public ground hunt and putting in for the tag this year. I am sure there are some good units with allot of public ground with good goat numbers on it. If anyone that hunts there has some ideas on what units are good and units that they have hunted before and would be willing to share the info with me that would be great. i am not 100% sure i am going to do it but putting some thought into it. thanks

If I was going to put in I would focus on two general areas where I have seen decent numbers.

Between Lewistown and Malta.

Between Havre and Malta (north of the highway).

Not sure on amount of public land or best place. I know ranchers would likely permit access if you poked around. Just telling you where I would personally consider...

Lots of antelope in the 700 district with lots of block management.

700 is where I hunted about 9 years ago and did well. We were between Jordan and Miles City on Block Management ground. There's not a lot of public land around there but if I go back I think I will hunt the little bit of public land there is. The Block Management we got access to was just too small, although three of us did kill three bucks in three days. But it would have been more enjoyable to have more area to hunt.

Are you hunting rifle or archery?

Post by: carpsniperg2 on April 06, 2010, 09:33:05 PM
I think rifle thats how i got my last one and on public ground i feel better with a rifle than a bow now private ground i would love to shoot one with my bow. but it has been awhile since i shot anything with a modern gun. so i think that is the way i will go thanks for the info guys keep it comin. :camp:

x2 on Havre/Malta units north of the highway - 600's.  It's almost all private, but there are thousands of acres of BMA units up there with check-yourself-in rules.  Tougher draw odds - like 50/50 maybe, but harvest rates are extremely high.  Heard good things of 700s too.  I would stay away from the 100% draw odds areas- check the stats - they have low success rates.

If I were you, I'd go Wyoming - same time to drive to northern part of WYO as MT 600 and 700 units (more or less), and WY is like almost 100% success rates in almost all units and easier draws than MT.  WAY better speed goat numbers and better access in Wyoming - best state in the west for Antelope.

i think wy already had its goat deadline to put in i think :dunno: i looked into that as well a bit and would be open for that as well. also if anyone on here is going to mt or wy and would not maybe mind one more on a group app i would like to learn from people that know the areas and how to hunt them. i have hunted them in the past but to go alone is not as much fun either.

thanks dansk

Don't overlook the Charles M. Russell Wildlife are. More public land than you could hunt in a lifetime and plenty of goats.

we are going to put in for the area around Havre and have 6500 acres of private land that is loaded with antelope.  Never hunted them but have a good connection so we are going to give it a shot. You are welcome to go if you draw.

I was drawn for the 600 unit a couple yrs ago.  I grew up there and wanted to hunt the home place and it took 4 yrs to get drawn.  I had access to some private ground, but there is plenty of block management ground available...and plent of goats too.  Not sure which unit I am gonna apply for this yr...maybe somewhere else

My sister, my brother in law and I are putting in again this year (we didn't draw last year).  They have a buddy that lives in region 4 that says he can show us some places, but the draw odds are better puttin' in for 700, so we have a little bit of a dilemma.  Not sure what we're going to put in for yet... :dunno:

Check the success rates.. 400's can be hit and miss.  600s and 700s are high success.  That's a long haul and lot's of dough for an 'iffy' unit in my opinion.

They sure dropped the tag numbers in some of the 400 units. I hunted unit 481 in 2008 and there was 1200 tags last year there was 400 tags. The antelope numbers are down but they are still out there.

Good point.  My sister is going to talk to the guy she knows again.  If he doesn't have a "sure thing" lined up, we'll probably do the 700s.  I think it may have been the 2008/2009 winterkill.  Lots of deer hunters in the 400s last fall were not happy campers...

Path- noticed you drew deer combo too - would you go over twice or make a combo hunt earlier in november?  ...been wondering what I would do If I drew both deer and 'lopes in MT...

Go to Mt. or Wy. for the lope, drive to Colorado for Deer and then back to Mt. for deer.

Yeah, I am trying to figure out that one right now Roger.  Would be a lot easier if I didn't care about staying married, or getting court-martialed for AWOL... :chuckle:
I think I may have found a place in western MT to hunt mulies, that may uncomplicate things a little...  Not sure yet...

I generally take 4 or 5 weeks for my out a state/multi state hunting each fall. Get plenty of time off from work and the wife goes with about every other year. She's not a hunter and gets bored if we stay a couple of weeks in one place.  We have a special relationship that when I go without her it's OK. Got to love that.

I drew the deer tag and now im gonna apply for the 700 Lope tag. I am planning on going over from Nov 6th-14th. Will the Lope hunting be any good this late in the season?

Might be kind of tough finding lopes with horns still on their heads at the end of the season. Without looking I think the lope ends the 8th., not for sure.

When I hunted the NE corner last year in mid-Nov they had all dropped where we were.  I am in for Unit 480, apps went out today.  Fingers crossed....

Just got my copy of Eastman's, and they don't even mention those two units in the MRS Section for the draws.  My sister's husband has a buddy that lives in 480 and said he will show us around and help us get our goats, that's why we applied there.  If not for that we would have been in for the 700s.  We'll see if we get drawn.  Bonus point from last year + bonus point from this year... hopefully we get lucky...

I've seen tons of horns into November.  Especially during mild falls.  I always liked hunting them later as most of the hunting pressure was off them and they were back into their normal habits.  Hunted the 700 region only though.
