im getting ready to go get my first turkey calls this week and was wondering what i should be watching for and what has worked for you, also what call do you regret buying and why?
thanks for you time

Slate, very versatile, easy to use. There are a lot of different ones out there, glass, aluminum, slate. just find one that works for you.
On your other question about any tips. If you are already finding birds then half the battle is won. Put them to bed the night before, get on them before light, set up about a 100 yards away and listen to what they are doing, and be patient, I have had birds come running in to a decoy, and I have sat there for three hours before I could get one to come in.
Have fun, learn from it and be safe.

X2
If you're just starting out.....go with the pot call( Slate) they come in many different types and can be learned rather quickly, may look to buying a couple different strikers( pegs) that way it can turn one call into many.

I purchased one only a few weeks before I called in the one my son shot, his first turkey and the first one I'd ever called in.

I carry glass, ceramic, and aluminum pot calls and several strikers. Diaphragms are always in play, and nothing beats a good box call for cutting. I use cutting to locate mid-day while "running and gunning", as they say, (covering ground, doing set-ups & locating just as you would hunting elk).
Agree with the above comments that a slate (pot) call is easiest to learn and you only need to worry about a putt, cluck, and purr to get you started. Turkeys make a lot of different vocalizations but these are the bread and butter hen sounds that can/will attract gobblers. Conservative calling will serve you best if you're not well-read on turkey behavior.
Good luck!

Small to mid size Box call. Get one that works wet and does not need chalk.
No parts to lose, no striker to lose. No need to sand or scuff up mid day...
You can work it with two hands, or with one hand on the ground next to your leg as a bird works his way in...try that with a pot call, not so easy...
-
:)I vote box call also. easy to learn and verstile.

X2 :yeah: Box calls are easier than pot calls. A box call will make any call you want to make, even gobbles. If it's wet out, put the box call in a bread bag. ;)

a copy of Gobble gobble gobble by Roy Orbison  Actually we do not hunt them but there are about 3500 of them on the ranch where we hunt Whitetails. Do they taste like real turkey??

My own...

I've found when most calls don't work, I pull out my boat paddle box call. They seem to work when most won't.
-
now that I have them pretty well figured out I won't hunt without my diaphram calls...
If you're new and wanted my input, I'd figure out how to use them 1st.
-
If i could only have one i would have to go with the SONIC DOME! Most trustworthy call i've ever used.

This is what I take to the woods for calls.

Gee whizz man...that looks like 5 box calls...do you have a sherpa?
-
Sometimes it takes the right call to bring in a bird. Don't ask me why. The year I first used the aluma slate call, I called in every tom I worked. Hasn't been as good as that first year. I keep tight rubber bands around the box calls so as not to squeak while walking. ;)

Heck I was thinking the other way......PA...That's all you're carrying LOL ;) I'm more of a pot than box fan while there's nothing wrong with good box( I carry two)

I've got too many calls ... usually carry at least 1 box (out of 7), 1 pot (out of 5), 1 tube call, & at least 6 diaphragms (out of about 30 left after throwing away about 30) ... will pull out the wing bone and scratch box later on if needed. Way too many darn calls ...
:yike:

Wing bone? Crap, I tried using one of them and couldn't do it. To darned fizzy and bothered my lip. Now in the archive box.
