Title: New gun purchase taxes
Post by: Zuus on April 17, 2010, 02:49:49 PM
Stopped at my local FFL today and he informed me that any out of state purchases of firearms are now (actually since January) subject to state sales tax.  This amount taxed will include the shipping cost and insurance.  FFL service fee not included.  The FFL is required to collect this tax.
If you don't have a receipt for the firearm, or if it received as a gift, the gun FFL will have to charge you fair market value.

I couldn't get his link to work.  I had to type in the http://dor.wa.gov (http://dor.wa.gov) and then search for "interstate transfer of firearms"

Think this is crap?   >:(  Me too.  Call your local government official and complain.

About 9% more than your paying now depending on the county or city that you make the purchase in.  It's happenning to all mail order sales that go through a busines located in WA.  In a few years all mail order sales will be charged sales tax when they can figure out a way to monitor sales from companies that don't have stores in WA.  Other states are doing the same thing.

Just purchased a Kimber Pro CDP online from out of state.  The only thing that I paid sales tax on was the fee I paid to the in state ffl dealer to do the transfer.  I paid no tax on the firearm, or the shipping cost.  Just picked up the Kimber yesterday.

Rumor has it. many  of the FFL's don't even know about this law.  Yet they will be responsible to pay the back taxes if audited.  If you like your FFL, you may want to let him/her know

I know of a few shops that won't do transfers anymore because of this.

:)it is going to happen with lots of stuff. The govt. wants to tax internet sales. SST act was passed a few years ago but has been hard to implement.

The next step is to make it illegal to buy guns out of state.  Don't think it will happen?  They just passed it with flying colors on cigarettes.

Smokers are an easy target to try out ridiculous laws, no one gives a sh!t if you screw them.  But eventually, they will come around and take your rights.

If you live in Eastern WA, Diamondback shooters in Lewiston, ID does xfers for $15.  That's where I go.

Has anyone had any issues transferring in other states with an out of state drivers licence? I know you cant buy a pistol in washington unless you have a washington drivers licence.

Long guns are okay in ID, no pistols.  Pretty sure that's the same in OR.

Well, this is one more thing the thieving state is doing. Read on the states site and you will see this:

"If the firearm is obtained by gift, the instate dealer is obligated to collect use tax on the fair market value of the firearm, unless the receiving person can document that the prior owner had paid retail sales or use tax on the firearm."

So somebody can buy you a gift, pay their state tax, transfer it to you, and you now get to be taxed again for "use". B.S.

Not that I would ever ever suggest this but two boxes shipped via UPS cost a whole heck of a lot less.
