Left on Thursday by myself at around 5am from kirkland and drove to Hoquium to get my permits and passes.
I was the first in line and was told that only 50 had gotten their passes to date.
i asked her why it went from $25 to $100?
She told me "you're here aren't you?".... meaning cause they can.
i just smiled and said thanks.
Thursday drove the roads all day and say a herd of elk and a bunch of deer.
Learned a lot of good places to glass and a lot of good roads to drive.
Hiked for about 3 hours and then called it a day with it raining most of the day and pouring all night.
Tent kept me somewhat dry with the use of ropes and tarps.
Friday was pretty nice. covered about half of the unit with help of a horrible Map.
Saw more deer and a fresh fresh peel of bark.
Walked some clear cuts and sat on a few for a bit.
Called a few times with RR calls and sat patiently.
Went to town to pick up little lady to keep me company.
Rained all night on us.
Saturday we drove some roads, glassed some clear cuts and got some great recon about the unit.
Rained all day and into the evening.
still not much sign of bears.
saw more deer
Sunday woke up, packed up and headed to ocean shores for the day.
Great day to cruise the beach.
Great weather....
just returned home. will post some great pics we took tomorrow.
Next trip scheduled for April 30th.
Stay tuned.....
:hello:
-
atleast you got to learn so new area. gl next time you head int there.
-
Thanks yeah gonna keep at it.
-
Good luck, lots of bears down there. Grew up in that neck of the woods, never did hunt down that way much though.
-
Kept an eye out for your rig, but never saw ya. I only ran into 1 hunter in a jacked up Chevy and the Security guy. Spent most of my time near the Res boarder. Were you able to find a way into the trees at all? We tried and couldn't make more than a few feet sounding like a herd of elephants. That is the thickest brush and trees I have ever seen. And how about those clear cuts...or marshes, whatever you want to call them. I am used to WeyCo cuts, nice and clean with plenty of new growth. Never seen cuts with so much waste left behind. What is up with all the cedar chunks, shakes? We focused on the northern section, along the Res boarder. With the "quality" map they provided, we more or less wandered around finding our way from place to place. Did a lot of calling. Someone told me that it would be better to call later in the season, when the bears start feeding more on meat than plants. Saw deer, racoons and called in a yote, but no bear. In fact, I couldn't cut a track, I didn't see any scat or anything. I did come up with a previous year tree scrape. I could tell you what size boots the guy who flagged the trees wore, but no bear. Due to work, I won't be out until April 25.
-
Yeah i was all over that unit and the great map kept me good and lost.
I spent a little time in the trees but it was not easy.
ill be back out on the 30th.
i didnt see much sign either.
I will focus more on the rez boarder next time.
saw most sign there.
-
Keep at it man. The later in season, the better. I really got into the sign last year, bout the very end of April.
-

Yeah, I could say that I was lost most of the first day as well. Just kept at it, until things started to look familiar. Security said that there is a much better map, they just don't release it to the public. We even offered to buy his copy from him. ;) Well, he did say that he knows most of the roads! Maybe the weekend of the 1st my brother and I can meet up with you and work the border. It would be good to work 3 sets of eyes on some of the calling sets. Some of those cuts are really odd shaped and two sets of eyes can't see it all.
-
yes sounds good.
we will be in touch
it will be 4 sets of eyes my bro will be there too
-
more pics :P

Great pics Mike! Good luck gettin' your bear. You should have tried for the Monroe unit. I've heard about lots of bear in there and it's only 20 minutes from Kirkland.
Huntaholics!!!!
-
I did apply for that unit but was not drawn.
would be a lot nicer on the gas tank thats for sure.
Nothing will stop this huntaholic from huntin.
-
cool pictures so far. now get some of a dead bear.
-
If i had a nickle for every time i heard that... :bash:
-
kill a big 1 and remember it is a hunting trip not a camping trip. just focus on the task at hand. :chuckle:
-
why do i anticipate a 23 percent chance of a successfully filled tag and a 77 percent chance of a pregnant hunting buddy :P
-

oh trust me. I am hunting not camping. The first trip was more to learn the area and recon.
now its down to business.

-Steve
Better then crabs in the bush :chuckle:
-
Find the mushooms, and you might find Bears in the bush.
Remember, survey the bush from an elevated position when at all possible. You're looking for fungus, (mushrooms). While you're exploring the bush(es), Keep an eye on the fringe of the forest for approaching Bears.
It's easier to see Bears in clearcuts!
-Steve
-
there was always a certain weekend every month I tried to get the wife to go bear hunting with me :chuckle: But for some reason she didn't like the idea of bein bait :dunno:
-
3 pages already? I'm not coming back until I see a bear on the ground ;)
-
Yeah, He needs to take the "PICS UPDATED" part out of the subject line. I was gone for a few days, and damn.. I clicked on this thread to see fur laying all exhausted in the bush(es).
I'm quite dejected.
-Steve
-
I'll fix it...
;)
-
Cmon guys give BWB a break. Its not about killin animals; its so much more! Ehem, especially when you bring along the ol lady! :chuckle:

Thats why I went out on sunday...someone had to get some pics of bears on here, other than our 1 successful hunter! LOL.
Just kiddin guys/gals, looking forward to seeing all the success soon.
-
:chuckle: :chuckle:

Just got home from a very fun weekend with croix.
Left Friday morning and got home around 4pm today.
did a lot of driving, a lil sitting, a lil calling, and a little hiking.
Saw a little sign, no bears yet.
gonna try again towards the end of may.
definitely are learning the area.
:hello:
-
hope to flood don't come :yike: :chuckle: keep at er and good luck
-
Looks like you had fun, keep after em bud. Give me a shout when you get one down, I will be there to help. Mark

-
did a lot of driving, a lil sitting, a lil calling, and a little hiking.
Um... Someone else comment on what I see wrong with all this.

-Steve
If it is a new area he doesn't spend a lot of time it sounds to me he is learning the area. See's a good spot to call than he makes a stand. Wants to check and area out further he gets out and walks. :dunno:
-
3rd weekend plus?
What I'm getting at is that if you've found sign, in peels, other feeding areas, scat, then it's time for some focus on that area expanding outward looking for transitions from bedding to feeding. Unless you've got high overlooks of clearcuts to drive to, then it's time to stop road hunting and get into the woods.
-Steve
-
Ill bet you will start seeing more fresh peels in another week.
Do those big puddles in the gravel pit have tadpoles? More than once, we saw fresh bear tracks in those puddles where they were getting a drink when the wx was warm and drier, and I think they might have been catching tadpoles too.

Jackofalltrades have you hunted the Copalis :dunno: Mark

-Steve
Give the guy a break, he did some driving, so what...
-
Jackofalltrades have you hunted the Copalis
Nope. Sorry. But don't let that diswade anyone from slamming me for saying that he might be doing more road hunting than anything else. I know it's thick down there. There's a lot of thick places I've hunted. I was trying to state the obvious, that he's already seeing fresh sign. He might want to concentrate his efforts in the location of that sign.
-Steve
-
We are doing exactly that. But thanks for the check up. The majority of the driving was to learn the area.
but thanks for the :spank_butt:
-
Dont worry too much bout it Backwoods...my brothers call me the "road warrior"...
Of course, they didnt get a bear or deer last year and I did so... :dunno: :chuckle:

We used a lot of aerial mapping and tried desperately to find our way into some of the more remote stuff . What looked to be an easy task turned into more driving than we wanted because of new roads and crappy maps. Areas that looked good on aerial were often freshly cut and not as good as the pics we were working from and turned out to be a wash. We actually stomped the woods for several hours and spent several more out in the cuts glassing and calling. I know that my old knees are happy to be home ;) By the end of the weekend we narrowed that unit to a couple of really good locations and I'm pretty confident that backwoods will be pulling a bear out of there before it's all said and done. We learned a lot and had a great time. I wish I could go on his next trip.
-
:hello: :IBCOOL:
-
u guys should of went clam digging. at least you would of came home with some meat. :chuckle:

-
Oh btw the calls are great! thanks again for the prototypes.
rick called for me a bunch with them and they sound great!
-
that pic with your feet up, looks like my views half the time when I bear hunt.
If you want a for sure way to find a bear...take a nap...when you wake up, one is usually in sight.
Usually works for me... :chuckle:

Oh, I wouldn't believe a weather report that far out. They're only good a day or two in advance.
Especially for that area.
Even though it "always" rains up there, like you said, the reports are not accurate that far out.

i just want 75 and blue sky for 4 days thats all i ask

-
I hunted that unit with a spring tag last year and feel your pain. hunted 8 days before i finally connected. I never saw a bear until that day (which ironically was this day last year, May 23) and saw two within 10 mins of each other and was able to get the second. keep pluggin along, though. I am attempting to attach a pic it but i'm not real good with these "confusers" so I apologize in advance if it doesn't come through
-
Nice lookin Bruin Brew. Welcome to the site. Mark
-

-
Just got home guys and I am sorry to report that there was no blood shed this weekend.
Got camp set up thursday night in the pouring down rain.
Hunted pretty hard Friday, sat and Sunday. Glassin, driving, sitting, glassing, sitting, calling, sitting, driving, glassin, driving, sitting, glassing, sitting, calling, sitting, driving.......
Did get into some elk (25 and 5 bulls) and jumped a coyote and some grouse.
One trip left on the second week of June.
Congrats to my buddy ED for connecting this weekend.
will post pics soon.
-

Looks like you had a blast. I really thought you might connect last weekend even had a feeling about it. I will look at my schedule and talk to the She and O about going out their with you your last scheduled time. Maybe another set of eyes will help. If nothing else it is another day in the woods. Have you seen any sign, poop, peels anything? Great pics...
-

You're going to connect soon.
-
Trip planned for June 10th-thru possibly June 15th.

But GOSH i really wanna whack one!!! :rockin:

I will be out and about that weekend as well. My Brother and I still have tags to fill. I have seen 2 and not had any luck getting a shot. Seen them off of the 8000 and the 6000, while driving to a new area. Still no luck calling one in for me, just yotes. Good luck, still looking to run into ya out there!
James
-
i hope one of you guys connect, there sure hasnt been a lot of bears hitting the ground this spring
-
Yeah i hear that.
we will probably be camping at our usual place off of the 8000 in the gravel pit.
White toyota tacoma primos elk sticker on back window.
hope to see ya out there.

:P
-
The gravel pit near the end? That must have been you I saw a couple weeks agoe. That seems to be a popular place! If you could hear the calling, how did it sound? :dunno: If you remember :chuckle: Good luck man!
-
Yes that was us and yes we heard all the calling.
It sounded really really good.
Did you guys call in a yotee or was that a call? The one sounded really close to our camp.
I knew i should have come over and BSed with you guys.
The word on the street was that you guys were there a week.
you going back?
yeah that is the third time i have stayed i that same spot.

Yeah, I will be heading back on 6-11 after work. Usually don't get in until 10 or 11. It is a 2.5 hour drive for me to get there. As for the yote, don't remember if I was being a smarta$$, or not. It seems like every time I get set up and start calling, we see 3 or 4 rigs driving by. Then I usually give up and make some silly calls. Hey, you never know, it might pique some curious bear to look up at me for a dose of Nosler.
Last weekend I sat about 2 miles from there crosshairs on a "bear" for at least 25 minutes. Through some brush, could only see the ears and right side of his head, the arc of his side to the ground. The wild raspberry bushes, at least that is what they look like to me, were covering him pretty good. Had my brother calling him from another spot. He never twitched an ear or moved a muscle. He was far enough out my 6x binos could not pick out any details, and my 4x scope wasn't any better. Wouldn't you know, it was a super rare Stump Bear! No kidding! Saw it with my own eyes. Good thing I didn't pull the trigger, my brother would have never let me forget it!
Any how, good luck and maybe we can catch up this weekend!
-
:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
Sounds good!
i have two other members going with me this week.
we will be either at the gravel pit or we will be at the promise land camp ground off of 101.

Well...............
Finally home from the "last hoorah" bear camp for spring bear 2010.
First off let me thank Ed and Rick for doing everything in their power to help me tag out.
We had a great time and got some unforgettable memories from this trip.
Unfortunately it just didn't work out this time. I am happy with my efforts and learned a lot about myself and about bear hunting. Also thanks to everyone from the site who was able to point me in some directions.
We were able to dial in a few very good spots and it seemed as if it might happen, but that's hunting and i cant wait till august.
-
:)
-
:)
-
Backwoods, you might have to get into the "camp cook" business. Are you for hire?
-
Actually yes i am. I love to camp cook its very therapeutic.
Honestly I have thought about starting a business. :IBCOOL:
that's one thing about hunting camps, with me you're gonna eat very good.
ps. I cant take all the credit Ed makes a mean steak too.
:hello:
-
looks like a great trip all and all.
-
Yeah it was a pretty good season.
30 days in the woods is always a good time.
Even if nothing is hanging.
-
With LTL there, I am surprised I didnt see any rock chuck or something freaky to eat....
better luck next time guys!
-
It was a pleasure pounding the woods and trails looking for bears with you and Rick. I am happy to share the things I have learned about, as far as what to look for when it comes to bears and where to look. Most of the knowledge I have, I was able to learn from generous people like Rasbo. While I know and I understand I am truly still a rookie when it comes to hunting bears it was nice to share some of what I know and see it play out in the field. While we did not get a bear on the pole, we did find his tromping grounds and favorite trees. Close but no cigar!!!!!Nothing like diving head long into the thick brush and trees to find the deepest darkest moist places to hunt a bear and do it with good people on beautiful country. Your putting in the time Mike and you will be successfull eventually; it is only a matter of time, patience and a little luck till you bag a bear. Rasbo your lessons rang clean and true on this side just like in your stomping grounds. Thank you!
August can't get here soon enough. I look forward to the next adventure with good friends.
-
Looks like a fun hunt and learning experience bear or not.August will be here soon.
-
Looked like good times man.... is that a model 721??
-
Just wanted to say this was a great thread to keep up with. Hunting is where we create the memories and shooting is simply where we create a highlight. The pics and storyline was great. Thank you for sharing your pics and overall hunt. Look forward to the next thread.

Thank you so much!
Hopefully when i get drawn for a "big BULL" this year i can have another thread.
:chuckle:
-
sorry you didn't tag a bear but since we're 11 pages into this thing, let's see more of the food action! You can cook in my camp anyday but you'll have to bike all that stuff in 5-10 miles :chuckle:
-
No problem.
I am for hire!

Dang, all that cooking could be considered baiting!! :chuckle: "Honestly officer, I love my bacon really, really, really well done." Did you check your camp for tracks? Nobody went hungry I take it. The Gorilla tape is a nice touch to hold those wraps together.

I cant believe you have that much time to cook :dunno:

well I'm pretty sure i know why you didn't tag a bear. eating like that every day in camp I'm sure you were farting from the tent to the mountain top all day long. they've got a pretty good nose you know? :P
