Does anyone know how much noise a bear makes pealing at a tree?
I would imagine you would be able to hear something like that on a calm day maybe 50 yards?
Thanks, Greg. :dunno:
-
not sure how much noise they make girdling, but if you can hear them you will see them....
-
Heard a bear one night pulling down/at an alder in early august trying to get to the grubs underneath it...... i damn near *censored* my pants. if there is one tearing at a tree you'll know. there is no other sound like it.
-
they will make some noise for sure :chuckle:
-
They scrape the cambium layer with their front teeth after removing the bark. I haven't heard a bear do this but many times they break lower limbs and I'd imaging the bark removal is a bit noisy.
-
It will also depend on what part of the tree they are working on. If they are down on the ground you may only hear them pull off the bark. If they are up in the tree then you may hear the commotion of climbing and pulling bark.
If you heard activity, and it was a bear, then it more than likely was stumpin' for bugs and grubs. This can often be heard a long ways away. One time I heard a bear pulling long slats off a cedar log and you could hear the cracking and slapping from 200 yards away.
-
I wish I heard that noise last year during the fall bear hunt!
-
I've never seen a bear peel up in the tree only at the bottom few feet.
-
low down..
-
When a bear is popping stumps it will stand the hair up on my neck. :twocents: Mark

Look up. lol
On the coast I have found peels as high as 60+ feet. The higher up, the easier the bark peels on those larger trees.
-
On the quinault reservation you will see a lot of trees peeled way up in the trees and when they are eating cascara berrys you will see the treesswaying back and forth thats how we have seen a lot of them.
-
Yep. Here is a high one.

Yes, but if you look closely you will notice that it is completely different.
Porky damage.

Notice how small the bark pieces are and if you look close you will see turds and quills.

I'll post a few peels as I can find them. I came up on a bear on a fresh job two springs ago and have some good photos of the tree. Got to find those. Some are old but I've seen maples peeled up 10' where they run up the tree like a banana peel.
-
Good information guys, thanks.
-
Yes, great job Thanks! :hello:

I found fresh peels yesterday in the monroe unit. I parked and could count 10 from the same one spot. I was thinking they might only be a few days old at the most.

Found a few more and will post, also got this sow and three cubs on one of my cams in the same area.
