Title: Tree peals and noise
Post by: Thehowler on April 19, 2010, 07:53:31 PM: Does anyone know how much noise a bear makes pealing at a tree?
I would imagine you would be able to hear something like that on a calm day maybe 50 yards?

Post by: bow4elk on April 19, 2010, 08:34:44 PM: They scrape the cambium layer with their front teeth after removing the bark. I haven't heard a bear do this but many times they break lower limbs and I'd imaging the bark removal is a bit noisy.

Post by: billythekidrock on April 20, 2010, 05:23:18 AM: It will also depend on what part of the tree they are working on. If they are down on the ground you may only hear them pull off the bark. If they are up in the tree then you may hear the commotion of climbing and pulling bark.

If you heard activity, and it was a bear, then it more than likely was stumpin' for bugs and grubs. This can often be heard a long ways away. One time I heard a bear pulling long slats off a cedar log and you could hear the cracking and slapping from 200 yards away.

Look up. lol

On the coast I have found peels as high as 60+ feet. The higher up, the easier the bark peels on those larger trees.

Yes, but if you look closely you will notice that it is completely different.

Notice how small the bark pieces are and if you look close you will see turds and quills.

Post by: bow4elk on April 23, 2010, 04:52:56 PM: I'll post a few peels as I can find them. I came up on a bear on a fresh job two springs ago and have some good photos of the tree. Got to find those. Some are old but I've seen maples peeled up 10' where they run up the tree like a banana peel.

It looks like a chipmunk or porcupine chewed on it a bit.

houndhunter is right but i've seen a few actually up in trees eating bark....
