Title: Bear Size
Post by: quadrafire on April 22, 2010, 10:09:45 AM
Is 6ft 2in large for black bear? What would one weigh approx on the hoof?
A friend shot one and had a rug made 2-3 yrs ago. Nice size bear, but I don't have much to compare to.

Didn't know bears had hooves.   :)

I guess you want to know what it would weigh "on the paw?"   :chuckle:

When you hit the 6 foot mark you have got a pretty nice bear.... :twocents: Have the skull measured if he's still got it, that will tell you how good of a bear it is as far as book animals go

A 6 foot 2 rug is probabbly a 200- 250  pound bear . On the carcass its probably 5 1/2 feet nose to tail.

And that was just a guess. it really depends on if it is a real stalky bear or slender. How wide is it in the  belly? If it is pushing that 4 foot mark its on the 250 pound side, if it is closer to 3 foot wide then closer to 200 pounds.

How wide is it in the  belly?

Would you get that measurement on the rug or would that be on the carcass?

like said it is hard to guess anything over 6 is a very solid bear. but to guess the weight is very hard the bear could be a chunker at that size and hit 300 or a slim bear and just maybe make 200 so it is hard to guess for sure.

sorry to  :jacked:
but my taxidermist said my bear measured 6'-7" when he skinned it, will the rug be that big or bigger or smaller?

to the OP my bear was this big and 3 guys could not lift it onto an atv to haul it out, we had to quarter it.

Typically a spring bear on average weigh less than the same fall bear. They pack on a lot of weight over the summer and fall months.

Also an older bear will normally weigh less than a younger bear in his prime would.

There are a lot of different scenarios that will go into weight and length.

If you see a bear that looks long, with short legs, short nose and small ears SHOOT HIM!

Any black bear at 6 feet is a good bear for sure.  The five I have taken are all in that range up to 6'6".  I have gotten them all in the spring and the largest one weighed 370.

All were older bores.  The oldest was 17 that I took in Manitoba.

6' 2" is a good sized bear. Normally a bear's hide is measured nose to tail and then front claw across to the other front arm's claw. Those two measurements are added together and then divided by 2 to get the squared hide size. Most bears will measure longer claw to claw than nose to tail. My biggest bear measured 77" nose to tail and 88" claw to claw.
