Well has anyone heard anything about the Salmon and Halibut derby that is going on up here in the Penninsula area?
-
Um, I don't think halibut are open... Just some blackmouth running around.
I'm getting the boat all ready for this year. Right now I'm redoing the interior so I'm ready for halibut and salmon, oh and maybe a few ling...
-
i would have thought for sure it said salmon and halibut? ill have to find out...........
-
I've never seen Halibut open until May. There is the Discovery Bay salmon derby and the Sekiu salmon derby going on right now. I've tried them and they are not worth the gas usually, just little guys and not a lot of them, but nasty weather.
-
When is the Neah Bay whale derby? I've got my .50, harpoons, buoys and dynamite ready to go.
-
yeah dman you are probably correct then..........probably just salmon...
and if were going for moby dick then im riding in your boat this time also polarbear.......lol................
-
The discovery bay derby has been pretty good from what I have heard. i think a 19# fish is in the lead.
Sounds like it have been pretty good up there for them.
-
Halibut open in April for P.A area and May 13th for Neah Bay, slab on!
-
Some of the biggest halibut come from the inside. In fact, offshore sites like Swiftsure don't do as well as inside hotspots on average... At least that's my take after fishing for 15+ years for them all over.

Yeah you guys are correct sort of, Let me see if I can explain it without confusing myself.
There will be several derby's held this year from February through October for both salmon and halibut, (during their seasons) and the tickets you buy are good for all of them. In other words you only have to register one time and can fish all the derby's.
I think it is a Swains General Store monthly derby (in area 6) in that there will be 4 prizes each month and any fish caught during an open season can be registered at Swains General Store except any halibut caught during the Memorial Day weekend derby will not be eligible for the monthly Swains prizes. (Those fish will be registered with the Salmon Club at the Port Dock and there will be separate prizes for them.)
Is that clear as mud yet ?? :dunno:
That is how it was explained to me so I hope you are more confused then ever !! :chuckle:

Here is a awesome family oriented and serious angler type derby. Every year all youth receive around $50.00 worth of gear just for signing up and fishing. Last years adult winner gave back $500.00 of his winnings, so first prize this year I think is going to be $1,500. They have an amazing amount of stuff to give away and raffle. Lowrance donates all kids of fish finders and electronics. I believe the top Lowrance product last year was worth around $1,500, and they had numerous others.

-LOL ya, I have yet to mount my .50 on the bow this year for the Neah Bay event!
Beautiful 19.4lb fish won the Discovery Bay derby, looks like the Springer's are trickling in.
