Title: Lying SOB WDFW!
Post by: Jerry on April 26, 2010, 03:45:01 PM
The WDFW said that they needed to reduce the anterless harvest in the Yakima elk herd )(GMU 578 I'm talkin about). So, they have restricted it to 3 point or better. Here's the anterless take for the past 3 years:

Now I'm only talking modern firearm season:
2006 - 49
2007 - 59
2008 - 51

In 2008 there were 16 animals taken that were more than 3 point...8-4 points, 7-5 points & 1-6-point. No data out yet on 2009 & I can't find it broken down for horns.

So...to REDUCE the take of anterless elk from the Yakima herd, what was WDFW's solution? Hmmm...to make 150 cow tags available for the 2010 rifle season for elk in GMU 578! In the past three years there's been 160 taken altogether and now they're gonna giveout, I mean sell, a 150 cow tags?!? WTF??

This ain't about reducing the take..it's about revenue. Why don't they just tell the damn truth for once. Lying *censored*s.

Well, you have to look at the expected success rate for the permits.  If they figure on a 33% success rate, then they expect about 50 animals to be taken.

But, I do agree with you assessment.......they are lying *censored*s.

I would figure only 5 to 10 percent for a success rate, so with that you'd be looking at 15 cow elk being harvested, at the most, out of 150 permits. So that is quite a reduction.

How many tags were issued in previous years, that will tell you if they are cutting back on harvest? :twocents:

I believe 578 has previously been open for antlerless elk during the general season, so special permit necessary.

0 antlerless permits in 578 in 2009.  General season modern firearm was "Any Elk".

The unit has been a fur tag/any elk unit for, oh, around 20 years or so, I reckon. A fur tag unit doesn't mean it's any easier to find the slippery buggers.

The WDFW has been trying to mess this unit up for the past 4-5 years or so, both with elk & blacktail. They are idjits! I really doubt that, outside of enforcement officers, that any of them leave the office except at quitting time!

I don't see the problem. They needed to reduce antlerless elk harvest, and that is what they are doing by taking that out of the general season and making it a permit only hunt.

Is it that you don't believe the elk herd needs to be reduced in that area? Or you think 150 permits is not going to reduce the harvest enough?

My understanding is that the WDFW is changing management strategies in these units (568, 574, 578).  Before they were managed strictly for blacktail deer, and now they are going to switch or even it out for elk.  Bobcat is pretty close on the 5-10 percent success rate for these hunts.  That being said it should give you a harvest of around 10-20 cows, which is a reduction from previous years.  Personally I think this is a good move as it will turn these units into good elk hunts in a few years, and will add animals to surrounding units in the national forest which are in decline.

I agree with bobcat on this, I wished they would do the same thing in NE WA instead of having wide open any elk. Our herd would do much better.

Sure hope we get that Selkirk moose permit before that.........Oh wait, it's any bull. Still would be a great draw before things change!

Isn't 578 { and 568,574 } part of the St Helens elk herd ? I always thought it was ??

Intersting theory...attempt to reduce the harvest by adding more permit tags while increasing revenue. I'm assume this means for the general season no cow tags only permits?

IN 2010 the general season in 578 is 3 point minimum.

i am glad they did this, because on a heavy snow year the elk that come out of the lewisriver unit get slaughtered. but i think they should of just moved the 560 boundry to the glenwood highway, and that would of solved the problem.but that would be to easy and if they had they couldn't soak you for another 6.50. good luck guys i won't be back for about 5yrs give them time to grow.

First, unit 578 is not part of the Yakima herd. The herd in 578 is actually stems from the Mt. St. Helens herd, but that doesn't really matter I guess.  578 has been any elk from about the beginning of time, this area along with 388 (formally 588), 564, etc have always been managed as deer wintering areas and agricultural main stays, which in return they didn't want the elk in these area's, that is the reason for the "any elk " unit's in the past. Now they realize that these areas can hold the deer and elk populations with no problem and as far as agricultural, there has been a decrease in the amount of Ag. and more development. I think the three point or better is great, and as far as the more antlerless permit's that just SMELLS OF MORE REVENUE FOR THE WDFW!
