Title: Where to hunt? Please Help!
Post by: archerTim on April 26, 2010, 05:13:42 PM
I grew up hunting whitetail and turkey in PA, but have not hunted since moving to WA in 2001. I miss it and want to get back into it this year. I live in Puyallup and want to hunt somewhat close to home. Can someone please give me some ideas on where to hunt within the Puyallup, Mashel, or White River GMUs? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Mashel is mostly private and I might be wrong(wouldn't be the 1st time) but I think elk in the white river unit is permit only.
Also...just to give you a heads up...
typically coming on here and asking for where to go hunting information in your first couple posts on the site will get you blasted. We don't mind helping when possible but you're probably not gonna get a ton of responses.

Tim, From one old east coast hunter to another. grab a reg book and figure out how much road time you are willing to spend. I spend a lot of time on the east side for elk (muzzy)and west side for deer (modern) learning areas, some are better than others but you need to be in the woods now learning (scouting) Like your other reply said they don't really like helping new guys out on this sight. You may take their once in a life time deer/elk . If the military ? brought you west you have some bonus spots as a bow hunter.

You can always start off on the nearest busiest corner of your neighborhood...... :chuckle:

Seriously though, there is a ton of state land south of you for turkey and deer.  Take a look around I-5 and Hwy 6 for starters.
You wont find turkey hunting on the wet side easy though.

Thanks to all for the replies. I am not trying to find out people's secret spots just wanted a general idea of some common hunting areas. Being prior military and now an air force employee, I think I'm going to check out Ft. Lewis for some blacktails.

Don't foreget to see if you can hunt or if they still hunt Indian island. It is Navy but I am sure DOD can use it. was LOADED with archery deer years ago

haven't allowed hunting on Indian Island since 9/11. same for Bangor - and i really believe that there may be some state record blacktail in those areas now. too bad we can't get at 'em.

Ft. Lewis can be very productive.

I would go with fort lewis for deer.  For elk, head down I-5 another hour and you will be in prime elk area.  Units like Ryderwood, Coweeman, etc. all have tons of elk. If you bow hunt and want to get away from crowds, bike in on Weyerhauser land behind some gates.
