I've never thought of packing a small animal this way. The picture is Winter 1887-88.

Pretty sure I wouldn't want to.
-
It ain't as user friendly as it looks!
-
you can make a backpack out of him to works great..but make sure ya got plenty of orange...awesome pic
-
I think that guys were just way tougher back then... We like to think that we're tough these days but we don't have anything on those oldtimers.
-
Having all the weight on one side gives me a backache just looking at it.

:yeah: Exactly what I was thinking. I know I couldn't carry one that way. It might be better to have two, one for each side, and balance the load. :o
-
in new zealand allot of the outfitters make backpacks out of them like rasbo was saying split the front feet then tuck the fronts threw a cut on the back legs and instant back pack easy on the goats and rams and smaller game not as easy on a stag :chuckle:
-
Never mind how he's carrying that doe. Look at the buck. :yike: At can't see his right side antler but his left side sure is nice.
What do you think the guy by the fire is telling the guy with the doe?
-
Yea the guy with the doe does not look to happy.

When I was in highschool I carried a little basket rack buck this way about a mile to my truck. Only because I was by myself and late for Thanksgiving at my grandparents. I wouldn't reccommend it. :bdid:
-
that picture is f*****g awesome.
-
Nowadays, we have men carrying "manbags" like that!
It doesnt look like a comfortable way to carry it...but thats just me. Great pic. Nice buck on the ground. Check out the guy at the fire, he has a nice pistol on his belt...and a huge shealth maybe in front?
-
I'd sure like to have the rifle in the lower right
-
I've done it twice with 2 whitetail doe's my father in law shot. I did it in wheat country and it was relatively flat. It's not that bad and a hell of a lot better than dragging the deer a long ways, at least for me.
:dunno:
-
Awesome lever gun up front.
-
that is a really cool picture! looks awkward to me but hey whatever works...
-
I might be able to do it with a yearling! No way I could carry a buck or doe very far like that. Love the oldtime pictures!
-
BTKR. . . . . .why haven't you posted the picture of you and your deer back pack?
-

you have to be tall enough too so it won't drag on the ground.
-
I have carried a doe like that before, while I was crossing a deep creek. When I got her up on my shoulder I was really suprised how much more mobile I was..... I imagine if you had to walk like that for 2 miles you would be a hurttin unit.... Plus that dude is on roids for sure, you cant tell by the photo but my money is on him killing that thing with his bare hands.
-
BCchaser has. Haha. Keep in mind that this was no small animal. Was a 200 lb doe. BC is just a big dude.
-
i think the guy in the old pic probably balanced the load by carrying the buck on his other shoulder. you cant cheat the mountains pilgrim

While I will agree that BC is a large dude, that pic would make him go about 600 pounds. He's not that large. That is a great pic. You probably could have just put her in your pocket if you had another one to deal with.
-
Awesome pics!!!
-
Hey crowns if I remember right I think you said you would beat me back to camp by going back to the truck! I had a river to cross with that one too! :chuckle:
-
Cool pic BC!
-
Love that old picture. Tough old dudes. That's why life expectancy in those days was only about 40 years old. Those guys are in their teens... :chuckle:
-
The backpack works fine on a small buck or a short ways on a big buck. Tried it a couple years ago on a 4pt blacktail and only went 100 yrds before stopping to bone it out. At 30 yea, at age 53 it isn't worth it - they might be packing you out.

i would loved to live back then.
-
I wonder if he is telling the guy with the doe "Dude, steers ain't in season."
:dunno: looks like a cow to me

Man that's an awesome pic. Real men of the mtns.

Done that to a couple fork horns and a few spike BT.... Dad did it with a big 2 point Muley up the side of Stroughbacke Mt. One time.... I heard the shot... By the time I got there he was at the top of the ridge and I was driving the Cruiser up the road..... I said I'll take it from here.... :chuckle: The back pack works good.... Kinda neat to....
-

Ya but back then men were men and tougher! :chuckle:
-

Put your small one over there away from mine. :chuckle:
-
I've carried out quite a few like BTKR is doing, never made a backpack outta them, just got'em up on my shoulders and walked'em out. Not sure the one sided thing would be too great on the back. Although the doe in the original picture is no monster. The buck on the ground on the other hand is a dandy.
-
I wonder if those guys are sleeping on self-inflatable air mattresses, or do you think they are using the old poly pads...? :chuckle:

probly just crawled into the pop up trailer just out of the picture.
