Post by: JAMMER55 on April 29, 2010, 12:06:33 PM
Hey guys,
I've been looking at the Ruger GP100 .357 mag stainless with 6" barrel for a long time now.  Just looking to get some feedback and see what people think.  Thanks

Rugers are some of the strongest revolvers made. Unless you do something stupid, they'll last forever.

It's for shooting fences when they get in your way.

I've had the 6" barrell stainless model in .357 for over 20 years now.  It is my primary side arm when I carry while hunting.  I love it and would buy another in a heartbeat.

I had one, blued.   I was never to happy with it.  Even from a rest, shooting single action I could never get good groups with it. Think I got a lemon? Everything else I was shooting that way, Taurus, S&W, Redhawk grouped great.

The only thing I noticed holding it in the store was that the front sight was black and might make it hard to pick up dark targets.  Any suggestions for this? Is this even an issue?

The front sight is black so it won't glare from overhead light.   Yes, you can get a fiber sight for it.  I know people that are using GP100's in stock form in competition doing quite well against the Smiths of the mid 70's. That says something. There was a bad run of them a few years ago, but the majority are great guns with normal Ruger fit/finish, and durability.

Its funny, I just started my research today into revolvers. The GP100 was one of my top picks but was getting on here tonight in order to post a question regarding it. Low and behold someone beat me to it!

Of the many guns I have owned and sold over the years my 4 inch GP-100 is the one I regret getting rid of the most. It was one of the best shooting 357 magnums I have ever owned. One of these days I will get another one.

Don't own one but I have shot my fathers SS with 6" barrel a bit and it's a solid accurate gun. :twocents:

WOW! Awesome pic Videoman.  I checked the Ruger site today and they want $50 freakin bucks for one of those fiber optic sights  :yike:
I thinkin the nail polish sounds like a good idea after seein that B.S.
So from what you guys have posted so far the GP100 sounds like a no brainer.  So how about the holster?  What are you guys using for this thing?

Nice gun, well made, a bit heavy but overall a dandy sidearm.

i had a gp100, it was pretty good. gave it to my brother and about 2 years later his house burned down. he found it in the rubble and had it checked by a local gunsmith. it checked out fine, had it rebuilt/refinished and still uses it today.  i would rate it a well built firearm.

Check out sharpshooters, they rent guns at their indoor range.  As for buying it, I wouldn't count out the double eagle pawn shop in Deer Park.  If they don't have them cheaper than anyplace else, they will at least match anyone's price.  :twocents:

I have mine for 3+ years. My fishing/hunting companion... Blue with 4 inch barrel. Very accurate. I bought a front sight with RED insert from Ruger directly. Works just fine.
