Here in Germany, buck season opened up May 1 and my husband took me out to his new land today. We got out there shortly after work and I started reading my book. I was a few chapters in and was getting to the really good part when my husband elbowed me, leaned to my ear and said, "This is your good buck, put your book down." So we started watching this buck. It was about 7:05 when we first saw him and the only shot he would give me was his butt. I was getting really impatient because his antlers looked really good and this was going to be my first deer ever as long as he didn't get away. About 7:45 he hopped back over the creek towards the woods and finally gave me his side. I settled on him through the trees and shot. I felt really confident with my shot because I had about 40 minutes to stop shaking from excitement. He jumped up pretty high back into the creek, then back out and ran into the woods. We waited for awhile then got out of our tree stand. Heading over to the spot that I shot we found a good amount of blood. My husband (addicted) was being really careful not to mess up the blood, just in case we had to get the dog out, and I saw him, "Dead deer!!!" and ran to it. He was a sechzer (3x3) which is pretty good in Germany, equivalent to shooting a 4x4 Muley. Not in size, but in being big for that animal. I was really excited about it all. I finally shot my first deer and it feels good. My shot was really nice and now I finally have my own trophy to hang on the wall.

Here are a few more pictures. My husband is so nice. He gutted the deer for me. =)
-
awesome....congrats to you guys.

these deer peak at about6-7 years and then begin to regress. at first glance with the size of the antlers and how clustered and close together the rosen(bases) had grown i thought he was a reguressing buck but looking at his teath he was probably 3-4 years old. he was a forest buck so he was on a smaller scale than the farm country bucks.
thats my girl.

Everything in Germany is private land. We paid a certain amount of money to the forester so that we could hunt there whenever we wanted for the next year. No other fees unless we want to buy the meat and we always get the trophy.
-
Very nice, congrats!
-
Great looking animal....congrats..

lieser bitzen didnt stick when i had her drag it out of the brush so i could field him up. I didnt give her a shutzen bruchen because i thought the forster should do it.
-
very cool congrats to her
-
So you pay the land owner to hunt the land but they get to keep the meat?
-
all land is "private" whether it is owned by an individual or the forst department. the forstampt needs hunters to keep the numbers down so all the young trees they plant dont get munched on. this land is leased from the forstampt and we hunt it under the pretence that we kill as much in their respective season as possible. ;)
-
congrats! i look forward to more threads about downed animals in germany!

Congrats to you both. Mark

As he lays photos. he only got about 10-15 meters after the shot.

That's what I thought, same in Austria, did you have to complete the hunting class?

What caliber rifle did she shoot it with? Cool looking buck! Congrats! Sounds like a bunch of fun!

Nice...
I still like it here much better, since our licenses and tags are cheap.
Been there, done that... In Europe - take any place - hunting and fishing is regionalized per one unit (river, lake, forest). You pay to the private party, a landlord so to speak, who manages the area - to have a privilege to hunt. Part of the fee goes to the State, of course. So, you have to be really rich to have some variety of hunting and fishing.
Roe deer is good eatin' too.
