Title: Late season calling
Post by: Tilley Rd on May 07, 2010, 03:36:23 PM
We had turkeys all around us this weekend but none of them would even look at our decoys or come to our calls.... all of the long beards were with hens but even the small flocks of jakes ignored us... we ended up getting three birds for the two of us but it was more of a pattern and ambush situation..sat in the blind silent with no decoys out and let them walk by.. I would like to take my daughter over and try but I'm wondering if we are done calling for the year.  the ambush worked out great but I'm not sure it's worth the drive to try and get that lucky again.

if you can pattern them and if that works that would be fine but generaly not a good idea to spot and stalk turkeys gets kinda dangerous. it should get better with most of the hens setting and the toms hunting for the last tail around :chuckle:

Late season, they'll still act to a call, I try and not do so much on the real aggressive stuff, for they are getting wary of fighting each other and other hunters, but I always start off soft in case there is a bird close by but I will get out and get  loud on occasion to try and find a recpetive Tom. My season last couple years didn't start getting good until Mother's day weekend, and I hunt almost exclusively public ground. They'll work, but if you're still seeing toms with multiple hens, that tom really has no reason to gobble. And the Jakes it can be a few things, one if they com investigate I'm sure a painful memory from the last time they gobbled or came into a call that all they got was a butt whoopin from another Tom. I'tll still be worth it to take your Daughter out for a lot of reasons, I took my Daughter out last year during the weekend of May 15-16 time frame and we were in birds all weekend, had a strutter at 20 yards( But in a bad position) then she called the same bird in for me and I missed him :bash: But she had a great time and heard plenty of gobbling. :twocents:

Thanks for the responses maybe we will give it a try next week.... We did not spot and stalk... we were sitting in homemade blinds waiting for them to walk by.
