So the training for my 5 mo old Chessy Chief is not going as well as i had hoped... I'm not having the time i had for the last dog, and my wife/daughter seem to interfere with the trying i do seem to accomplish. I am going on vacation for a week soon and i thought why not pay extra hand have him trained as well for an extended stay. I know everyone thinks you train a Chessy with a 2x4 but it doen't really work that way....I talked to Nordom Chesapeaks and he didn't seem interested. I would like some one who understands chessies and i'm not afraid to fork out.. :bash: I'll mostly be duck hunting with some pheasant hunting at the bro in-law's farm.... Chief sits, stays fairly well, kennels, loads up in the truck, and other day to day stuff well. He struggles with healing, fetching (retuning to me).... I willing to let him go for 1-2 months and fork out some pretty good dough.... What should i expect to pay, and get in return for it? Who should i Talk to ? I Have an idea as to how much it should cost and will say so after i get some input.... Thankyou in advance from a chessie lover.
My past chessie was trained by me and was acceptable for a first hunting dog. I did not have a wife or kid a the time and spent 1-2 hrs a day working with him... I don't have the 2hrs a day now and my wife/kid make what training i have done less consistent. I do get to take the dog with me to work, he gets time to run around my 2 acre fenced yard... My last dog came to work as well...

Good place to post this. Sorry I am not more help. Hopefully Happy Gilmore will see this and help you out. You may want to PM him. He knows dogs, training, trainers, and if I am not mistaken he knows about Chesapeake's as well. Good luck.

There is a great Chessie guy in Stanwood.
I don't have any experience with him personally just watching him handle his dogs in hunt tests. But, I'd give him a call and meet him.

Talked to a chessie owner who has had traingn one with long hollow... gona visit him this week and see where it goes.... From my searching around there arn't that many place "locally" to send your dog for hunt training.....I plan on dropping 2-3k on the dogs traing and everyone says 3-4 months.... Most "Trainers" want to instruct the dog owner not the dog. :( I left my chessie with my neighbors when i visited my inlaws this weekend and the Chinook river archers shoot in camas.... When i came back the neighbors said sat ot the deck all weekend and looked at my fromt porch and didn't even play with the other dogs much. :'( He's been listening so much better today i'm not sure i can send him away for very long.... I was really excited about Nordom in stanwood but they wern't interested in the least... My ignorance of how long how much must have thown up a red flag for them because they didn't say they even take dogs... :dunno: Who knows maybee i'll just keep my hard earned money in my pocket and work harder on traing my own dog, and my little girl (who just loves playing with my chessie)....

Good choice you'll like Ryan. A lot of the dogs are sad for a couple days after being dropped off but they get used to it when the work begins. Good luck

I signed the paperwork with Ryan at Long hollow when I visited his place on Tuesday... Down to earth good guy... I like the fact that he mostly trains on his land or land that is 400yds down the road from his place... More training time.... I asked him why other trainers i had inquired about do not accept dogs for training.... He guessed it had to do with the competitions that the "trainers" compete in... If you are a breeder and sell your dogs started, or put together a workshop to help you train your own mut, then you don't compete with Full time professional trainers.. There are many Knowledgeable people that don't make their living from training but compete as a Amateur / novice... If I understand correctly that is why there are relatively few people who take dogs for training... The amateur would then have to compete with full time trainers... If I am mistaken or have some of my facts wrong please say so... I think i understand why i was frustrated trying to find a full time trainer for my dog... This seems to be the best explanation...

So I had to deliver some tires to E Wa and drop the head trouble maker off at long hollow retrievers.... We took one last road trip together, spent the night at my brother-in laws place then dropped him off in E-Burg on my way home tonight. :'( I miss the little stinker already! Fortunately i started last week telling my little girl that Chief was headed off to Duck Hunting school for the summer.... When i Got home she asked where he was and i reminded her... She asked how long is he going to have a sleepover at school? Kids say the damnedest things.... Miss the pup and sure my little girl will too..... Dogs at boot camp so i guess i have to get my duck hunting gear in order so i can continue his first year training....

So its been a month and i haven't seen the little guy... Went over to the brother in laws for the 4th of July... Shot some carp watched some fireworks ate some BBQ oysters, life was good.... I stopped by LHR on the way over and the way back from Moses to see my pup...
Got to see chief work a little... he fetched a dead pidgin from 100yrds to my hand from the launcher! That was one of the big reasons he went to boot camp.. :) He healed great and his obedience was much improved. He still has 2 months to go but he is already doing great.... I've missed the little stinker and so has my little girl. I can't wait till hunting season so i can put him to work and have him around 24 7

Nope not this time... I'll be back over there before too long and then i'll have to shoot some carp with him on moses....

Sounds like fun. Let me know when you're going. Been itching to get over there and do some fishin or shooting carp for that matter.

Went on over to Long Hollow Retrievers and did some training with Ryan. It was great to work with Chief and see other dogs being worked... 1 more month to go.... He's done with all his force fetch training so i was able to take him Saturday evening over to the brother in law's.. Chief got to escape from boot camp overnight.... Took him back Sun evening. :'( I'm ready to have him back now! Chief will be working on LOTS of retrieves and steadying to shot...

I know what you are goin through special t. I dropped my shorthair lab mix pup off last friday and i miss her like hell. the girlfriend wants to go over every weekend to see her. things just aren't right without her tearin around the house chewing on anything she can get her mouth on and jumpin in the pool then running around the yard before coming in the house.

Right on! Check out the other little Chessie he has- I think a Fireweeds dog. Looks just like my little "gansta" Ty.

picked my "pup" up... not so little anymore :'( took him to work let him run the yard and worked on some extended downs... He KICKS ASS! I'm so happy to have him back. :) Got a drink in hand and dog under foot again...life is good! I'd post a new pic but my cell cam crapped out on me... :(
