I think I found a little bit of bear sign. :chuckle:
This morning I went out to move a trail cam and then decided to take a short walk. Well it turned into a couple hour hike, but I learned a little bit more about where this/these bears go later in the year.
I followed a lightly used trail and it ran into a heavily used bear trail. You know the type, where the bear steps in the same spot every time. I followed it a short distance and it went right under this downed tree. Too bad we can’t snare bears.

A little farther down the trail I found a recently disturbed depression against an old cedar stump and thought it looked like a possible bear bed but I did not find any piles of scat next to it. I walked around to the other side of the stump and found an older depression.

Next to the second (older) depression I found the jackpot of poo piles. I have found numerous beds and many piles of scat before, but this is the largest pile of piles I have ever seen.

I am not sure how many times he crapped here, but I figure at least a dozen. Maybe he moved his bed to the other side of the stump because he couldn’t stand his own stink.
I moved on and walked into a little opening and found buck rubs in the willows on both sides. Might be a decent place for a trail cam.

As I moved closer to the creek I found some bobcat and coon tracks.

And more bear sign. I found tracks with front pads about 5.5 inches wide and a hind that was about 7 inches long. I also found a couple of skunk cabbages that were dug up by the bear.

Following some deer tracks I then climbed up out of the swamp and into an old cut. There was lots of deer sign and some broken cascara. I will be sitting here come September.

If he told you he'd have to leave you there tied to the stump covered in honey. :chuckle:
Did you put up a trail camera?

That certainly answers the question "Does a bear s#!t in the woods?"

No, I left them in the primary feeding area. Next week I may move one near these piles if they have fresh deposits.
I am a bit concerned about running them off with all the hiking I did today and the fact that they are starting on other foods.

I'm sure you've heard it all before but here it is again. Your sure are a "crappy" photographer. :chuckle:
Nice pics man. Keep us posted. It's kinda nice having someone on here that has a passion for bears. I just wish I had the time get out as much as you. Good luck keeping track of "Scar Face". He looks like a biggun. Can't wait to see a picture of you holding his head up. Just remember to smile when they tell you to say cheese. :chuckle:

Thanks.
Honestly, I spend more time uploading the pics and story then I do in the woods. I have only had time for a couple hours in the morning on the weekends right now and about to get busier. Luckily I am pretty close to the woods.
I really hope to keep tabs of "scarface". He is a whopper, but I wouldn't turn down the second bear either. :chuckle:
-
Man, was that up Chit Creek???? Did you have a paddle????? :chuckle: :chuckle:

Hey BTKR,
I actually made it up to Capital Forest today for some scouting around. :IBCOOL:
I KNEW I recognized that fallen down tree/log with the bear trail under it. I hiked around for about 2 hours. It wasn't Scarface making those big piles. I am pretty sure it is a color phase that has been hanging around that area. I got atleast 1 picture of the Bear. It will get posted up here in a few minutes. :tung:

I have to agree with Michelle it pretty much looked like the same area. The bear was a color phased that was using that trail seen the big piles of poo but not as big as what it looked like in the picture. I got a couple pics of the bear if you want me to post them up. But Billy it is your bear, your spot so I won't post them if you don't want me to.
