Hey guys new on this site well been on it for few months but posting for the first time. Wondering if anyone knows how levenworth is and if theres any elk there.
-
Thats ur 1st post??? Start with an intro and leads in, you will probably get some help after that.
Welcome to the site. ;)
-
I wouldn't recommend the Leavenworth area for elk. Unless you really don't want to see any. Why Leavenworth ???
-
Just wanted to go up there for elk, but better question probably would have been are there any elk there?
-
go to wdfw.wa.gov and click through to the hunting section. There you will find harvest statistics by GMU for elk. You can get a pretty good idea by looking at that where the elk are. Here is the link http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/harvest/2009/elk_general.html (ftp://http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/harvest/2009/elk_general.html)
-
The only place around Leavenworth I have ever seen any elk was up on Blewett Pass, South of Leavenworth on 97.
-
Almost no elk north and east of Leavenworth, few elk west of leavenworth, some elk south and east of Leavenworth. Odds of tagging an elk or Sasquatch north of Highway 2 are pretty comparable, odds of tagging an elk south of Highway 2 are just low.

Why do you think that is? The country looks good. I would figure the some of the Colokum herd would move around up in there.

There is an any weapon, any elk season in the GMUs north of Highway 2, intended to minimize elk.
-
Does the dept of F&W not want them to establish there? Most of the orchards are to the south if I remember right.
-
I would be curious to hear the game department's take on it.
-
Just look at the harvest reports as dreamingbig suggested. Look at the Chiwawa GMU (245.)
-
i know a spot not too far from there where the bulls are going nuts every year when im at bear camp. theres elk around but probably not a ton

I believe that the game department's take on it is that they want the quality mule deer to be the priority there.

On one of my early summer camping trips up there a few years back, top of the pass going towards Tronson meadows I found all kinds of Elk skeletons, I think more than a few had been butchered there. I've seen some huge Bulls East of there in the Table Mt. area, whole lotta young ones.
Never seen Elk near Leavenworth, a few Masons though... :chuckle:
-
Looking at the seasons for GMU 245 it appears that they want them to reproduce but not get out of hand. There isn't any season prior to October 30th and then it is an any elk any weapon season from Oct 30th to Nov 15th.
Last year there were 6 elk reported taken out of GMU 245.
-
i know up near conconully you hear of an elk every once in awhile... but then the game dept goes in and kills them. they don't want elk there.
-
There is a small herd around Winton and Merritt. I've seen a few LARGE bulls while working the train between Wenatchee and Seattle. Not a ton of elk, but there are a few.

:yeah:

Where a bouts where the big bulls you saw between wenatchee and seattle?? :dunno:
-
I hunted that special hunt, cow hunt they had open last year a couple times. Didnt see any, but heard of 1 or 2 being shot. ???
-
Not any one place special. We just used to see them between Merritt and Winton.
-
Yeah i been in levenworth couple of times but never saw no elk there really wasnt looking for any, but they have this cow hunt in september i thought maybe to try it out. See maybe i can get lucky, planning on going there and talking to a few people with land over there, because it says most of the land is private, so will see ill try, ill keep you updated if i see anything.
-
my mentor who's been bowhunting for 25 years drew an any bull tag up there last year and said he never got within 150 yards of an elk.
-
150 yards is fine with me. Up to 800 yards perfectly fine, as long as i see it its going down! ;)
-
that cow hunts a joke. i was over there bear hunting and i didn't realise there was a cow season open when i headed over (don't elk hunt east) there was 10 trucks to a gate and every *censored* was on a quad or dirt bike. needless to say the elk were quite safe.
-
the only elk i have seen is in das-sport. (I THINK THIS IS CORRECT) anyway it is in one -of the shops in town. there are some nice bulls in there. great beer and good brats . :chuckle:

Yeah that plan is falling threw, cause all i keep hearing is that its a :bdid: so i got a new plan with my buddy to hunt west somewhere near st. helens.

First of all. that was plural and you can only legally obtain 1 elk per season unless you get a second elk tag.
so i didnt shoot anything, never said i did hotshot, theres elk up there and is a controll hunt. So what, people hunt it, just like theres people swamped in the colockum for elk, yeah theres lots of sportsmen and we all want to lay our hands on a trophy no matter what it is.
I still dont see how im a *censored*, explain, shoot me a PM if your embarrassed and dont wanna turn red infront of everyone.

wow people in our little home state of Washington are awfully in love with what they call an elk herd. Never hunted Levenworth. Pretty country im sure there has to be a few small herds spred far and few between if any up in that area. I'd proabably converse with the locals that live there before planning a full on hunt there. Seems no one can stay nice on these fourms. Everyone acts like there spots are the best and no one knows about them. Better off drawing a camel tag in this state verus killing an elk.
-
Like people have said here... there are a few elk around the leavenworth area, I have seen a few near and around plains, just north of leavenworth. My cousin sees a small group there a few times a year, he commutes from plains to seattle three times a week. My parents retired in chiwawa pines, they have seen a few over the years as well, they are there but very few...not your best bet for filling the freezer! The few that get dropped in that area are from a local logging outfit that has their eyes on 'em year round. :twocents:

well anyone up behind that gate on a quad or dirt bike would be a *censored*. that's how. not saying you were but if indeed you were than well you were being a dumb ass. its a 4 mile walk and you can hear the quads at the gate from the top.so I'm sure the elk can.how did you know i was a hotshot?
-
well that doesnt prove my ass is dumb. but hell what do i know i ride an atv to go hunting. :dunno:
-
boy you were right. got me all embarrassed and turnin red now :hello:

I wouldn't waste my time hunting elk near Leavenworth. Much better places and elk in other areas. Needle in a haystack

True, unless you know someone who owns property in the area that is frequented by the herd. Which alanger just might.

yep.

So far everywhere where i hunt, theres always signs that you cant ride quads, thats why i dont even bother, plus i like hiking and thats where the bigger bulls are at :IBCOOL:
-
I work with a guy that has a lot on the wenatchee river that says there is a small herd that goes from dryden to Lake wenatchee. About 40 to 70 Head!
-
Ok thank you for that, so far all i herd is that theres nothing there. Well i might try it out if i have some free time. Any specific place they stay at? I know they move alot, but theres always that spot that they like to stay at for a while.
-
Bearhide PM sent ;)
-
Better off just to hunt up Blewett pass
-
Who knows, them elk move alot.
-
Im going to hunt a different spot, for the general season, but i might try that place out for the early dates in september, thanks alanger for pm. ;)

Here's the gate to go in from.
This hunt is tricky, gotta be able to have a great vantage point with the elks.
-
That's where I seen the Elk when I was over there a couple of years ago, off Camas Creek Rd. I actually saw them on the 7200 road, about 2 miles from the "Y" where you pass through the "no shooting zone."
