Anyone hooked into some shad yet?
-
isn't it still early???
-
If they did it wouldn't be too smart to admit it since the river is closed to fishing for them until this sunday...
-
wdfw lurker..........ENTRAPMENT! LOL :P
-
isn't it still early???
I bet there is some in the river. Two year ago a buddy and I caught about 15 in a couple hours down around Kalama on the May 16th opener
-
Counts were 30 yesterday. At what daily count (after the opener) should I start fishin' it?
-
Where do you plan on fishing? If up by the dam, there should be catchable numbers by the first or second week in june
-
I am going to give the dam area a go. Looked at some info from WDFW and Bonneville . Would a 16-foot semi-V and a 40hp prop do ok there, or should I get my buddy with a sled or just pound the bank? Either way, I'll be there.
-
I've never fished them from a boat up by the dam, I've just always banked it.
-
Your boat would work fine. You run down about a half mile to the island and anchor in 10 to 15 feet of warer. The 10th of june is when they figure the peak of the shad run.
-
Cool, thanks. If anybody wants to meet up, looks like I'll be there the weekend of the 12th! :fishin:
-
You should be able to catch a few. If you haven't fished the area out of a boat be carefull. The current fluctuates and towards the boat deadline it is rocky and you can loose anchors. The fishing may be really hot at that time.
-
We use little dick nights that are silver with the red tail. Use a 3 way swivel with about 3 feet of lead line and a 5 foot leader it takes about 3 or 4 oz. to stay on the bottom. You also hook more if you lift your pole up and down all the guides do this.
-
just bring some colored beads and run one to your hook. dick nites, triple teazers and shad darts are a waste of money.
-
Should be catchable numbers running late third week of May. Fish the Shad rach and have fun. Best crab bait in the world also. Fathers day weekend is normally around the peek of the run. They like small gold colored things. Gold hooks make a big difference.
With my work schedule I might buy shad this year for fishing sea monsters. I'm going to only have sundays to fish and don't want to take to much time on the shad. but they are fun to catch!!!

Just what are you willing to pay for a mess of these little buggers ?? May be a way to off set a gas bill or two !!!
-
Fishcrazy are going to put in at bonnieville and run down or washougal and run up. I think someone said the deadline is marker 82. I have never run up but cohoho said it was;nt to far. I see lots of boats fishing at camas but don;t know if it;s for shad or sturgeon. I usually go down around the second week in june.
-
I hoping to head out on Sunday so I'm anxious to hear how you guys do the next couple of days.
-

Put in at Camas and anchor off the Washougal or up river by the tugs.
Fished Steamboat landing in Camas today. Slow but saw about 2 doz. caught in 4 hrs.
-
I am looking to buy 20-25 fresh shad if anyone is willing to sell them, I use them for crab bait.. I have zero time to fish for them this year....If you got-em let me know how much $$ you want for them....thanks
chris
-
I don't think you can legally sell them with out a license as they are a game fish. Barter may be a better word to use. :twocents:

Robodad, that was bada$$! :yike: :yike: Was that Bonneville?
Yep it was in the Columbia somewhere !!
I found this website with a wealth of knowledge and tips and videos for those that don't know much about some of this stuff, have a look at some of these videos and post up some comments here !!!

They are a food fish.
-
PM sent. Numbers are growing, 3466 yesterday
-
Another couple weeks still, I try and wait until they clear 30,000 a day.
-
A few years ago my buddy and I stopped by Bonneville on the way back from hiking when the count was about 300 per day going over and absolutely killed them we put about 30 on the bank in about 3hrs, only thing we could think its maybe they were all stacked up below the dam waiting for a big push or something??? tried it the next couple years with low counts and didn't bank 1 fish...must have been a fluke day.....
-
30,000 a day! :yike: Well I sure hope there is that many in front of me at any one time. :fishin:
-
If you have a boat no need to go all the way to bonneville, put in at camas and fish just down river from the launch or run up to the dolphin in 15 feet of water. I use a gold snap swivel and a gold #2 hook and that is it, some times i will put a red bead above the snap swivel
-
Steamboat has been pickin up. Slow sometimes.
I have about 1 doz in the freezer if anyone needs bait.
I'm fishin almost everyday cause I'm unemployed, so if anyone needs bait give me a holler.

Thanks for the invite. Too bad bitin was slow. Fishin with ya was great though.
Thanks again :brew:

So are Shad just used as bait, or do people eat em? Or what? Always caught a few to catch sturgeon with, that was it. :dunno: :dunno:
-
I know some people that eat them. They can it like tuna. They like it.
-
Mostly used as sturgeon, halibut or crab bait.
Some cook em and eat them.
Best recipe::
BBQ on a cedar plank, season to your liking,
Throw away fish and eat the plank. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
One word. BONES
We rolled ink on some and made fish print t-shirts. :chuckle: :chuckle: They came out great.
Then I burried them and planted my corn over them.
-
Shad are gateway fish... They are fun to catch but they are better when you turn them into tastier fish (sturgeon, halibut, crab)...
-
ohh how i miss the shad run, used to kill em with my dad and older brother. been a couple years since i have had the chance to fish for them because i joined the army, but i should just be in time to catch the tail end of the run next year when i get out and am back home for good!!!! good luck everyone and enjoy the fishing!!!
-
We were able to get enough for bait yeaterday. Fished the shad rack for them. bite was good but not hot. it won't we long and we should be seeing 100k - 150k going over per day. I think we just need some nice weather to kick them in gear.
The Sea Monsters have been slow!! We should be getting 6-8 per day and i have landed 1 in 2 trips with a few other mised chances.

fishcrazy I won;t be down until the middle of june just wondered if you were down by bouy 82. I think that is the new deadline I have never been any further down than the falls. Were there many other boats down there. Are you going to make lyons ferry.

I'm not sure axactly where the new line is. I found the marker on the Wa side but not the Org side. Anway yes I have fished the erea. Several otehr boats and people with their head in their arss. They like to anchor right below other boats and not give them room to chase the big fish. I will try and avoid large clumps of boats when trying to get the big ones.
As for lyons ferry. I really don't think so. my fishing time is very limited right now. I'm working 6 days a week untill the end of June. Gotta make the money when I can. Construction= feast or famine.
Good luck!!
Kris
-
Thanks Kris I will give you a report when I go. Construction sounds just like commercial fishing feast or famine. Were still trying to find some of our pots after the last big blow 60 mile winds and 28 foot swells some of the pots slide as far as 7 miles up the coast. Fish or no fish and rain or shine we will have fun at the catfish hole.
-
shad count went from 6000 to 28000 in the last two days at bonneville. anyone been out for shad or oversize sturgeon?
-
:yike: :chuckle: thats a lot of shad, our buddy down the road went out "they love to fish for sturgeon" and they caught some nice ones but no monsters. its been a long time since i fished for sturgeon, i remember one day we caught about 80 shakers in one day. one of the funnest days i have ever had with a fishing pole in my hand we did land one keeper and a black *censored* that was tagged but not big enough close but not close enough
-
Hey carpsniperg2, can we fling broadheads at shad?
-
70,000 shad over the dam yesterday :yike:
-

i havent fished for them since 07 but we have always used darts and jig heads and always brought em in. we even have our trick for our jig heads which usually work no matter what :chuckle:
-
Around Camas and up at Bonny, we are using dick nites in red/silver, red/brass, chartruse/silver/ red or orange and white.
Saw folks using darts at bonny, but dick nites were catchin 2-1
-
What size/oz dick nites are good?
-
Stupid question!!
Are these shad edible?
I used to net thousands of them in Missouri when I was a kid and they were just trash fish. I couldn't imagine eating them.
-
Why so stupid? :dunno: I am fishing these critters for sea monster bait. While they may be a trash fish, they lead to hours of fun and the opportunity to catch 10-foot plus fish later. This is the perfect fishery for beginners or families who want to have a good experience when they go. I will fish for anything, and they are all fun. These are not the little 4-inchers southerners use for bass bait, they average 2-5 pounds and yes, they are edible, I just choose to use them for bait!
-
:yeah: :yeah:

What I meant was, I am asking a seemingly stupid question, Not that shad catching is as stupid thing to do. Sorry about the confusion. It was a serious question. I think it would be a blast. I am not that close to the River and was just curious if they are eaten here. I didn't even know about the use for bait. Color me ignorant (I don't even know if these are the same type of shad we had in MO)
-
Thats cool, they are a blast to catch you can get a ton in the tri-cities in about 2 weeks and then catch some huge sturgeon in august when it opens by the damn. We did it last year and had a good time. Good luck

They are very good smoked.

PICS!!!! How late in the season is it still good??? Do I have until July 1st???

Back from the shad trip. The flow was high and the shad fishin' was slow. Only caught a dozen or so, then we decided to try oversized sea monster fishin. That proved to be a brilliant choice! We hooked nearly a dozen and ended up landing one at 9:59 pm on Saturday night. We were such rookies, we were fishing with 30lb. test and finally got a 7 1/2 footer to the boat. Pics this afternoon!
-
Here is the one we landed, about 7 1/2 feet, not to big, but big enough for us!

And here is our bait that we caught

We (I) also got lucky and caught a 16-inch walleye. Wasn't sure if I could keep it, so I turned it loose (bad idea). I found out after reading the regs that I should have donked it! Shad fishing should pick up in the next few days according to some locals.
-
I am heading down in the morning. Nice pictures but the water sure looks high do you know if you can keep legal sturgeon there now. Hope to get some pictures to show you.
-
You can keep them below maker 82, I think that is right at Mulnotna Falls (not sure if that is spelled right). I would call the hotline and see. The water was rippin and very high. It seemed like the shad were running in the bushes and trees. Even some guides were having trouble setting anchors.

I've never fished for shad before, but it looks like you had a great time (and got decent weather!). What did you use for shad bait, and where did you launch at? congrats, good pics. I've sturgeon fished before, but something about that picture makes 'em look creepy.
-
dic nites work great from a boat
-
I fished the same erea yesterday and today. Water was crazy high!!! I ended up with a 25" walleye also. We fished from 6:00 am -1:00 pm on sunday for 5 shad. We fished oversize for a few hrs but wind got bad and we just gave up after a few hrs.
Today the wind was better but the shad bite was still slow. we got a few and by 9:00 am we made a run for the gator grounds. We got a few bites and hooked into a good one. The reel locked up and we lost the fish. Later I pulled it apart to find the factory had left 2 extra screws floating around in it. (new reel) :bash: We tried another spot and started getting bites right away. 1 came off in a few seconds due to a week hook set. My brother forgot to put his purse down when he set the hook :chuckle: The next one was picture perfect and the fight was on. We got the fish pulled into shallow water and was about to get a look and it spit the hook. :yike: We had to get going as we had 45 min to get back to camp and pull out of th KOA or get charged for anothre day.
The water dropped about 3' in the last 24 hrs. The Sea Monsters were on the bite today and we seen many hook ups!!! Wish we had more time.
Next weekend I'll be chasin June Hogs so this might have been my last trip for Sea Monsters for this year.

Yes! but the run will be on the other side of the peak. It should peak in the next week but might be late from the looks of things.
Send me a PM and I can give you some pointers.
Kris

Looks like I may not make it back down again for shad. If anyone catches too many or doesn't keep em, I'll take em!
-

Wish I would have known. I tossed a few over before heading home the other day.
You need some for crab bait? I have some frozen.
Kris
-
Fished the shad rack the last couple days the water was really high and shad fishing poor we caught 12 shad for bait and landed 9 oversize.
-
There you go that is beyond great OS action right there. Nothing like a 300lb fish behind the boat, and people wonder why I like to go so much..
-
NICE buckhorn2! I cannot wait to get back down there. Fishcrazy, I will take any your are not using, I am so hooked on oversize sea monsters I may be divorced by the end of summer!
-
Lost are smaller anchor at the shad rack I don;t know but might have hung it up in the old pileing it finally broke our anchor line. Stopped on the way down the river and went up to the fishery;s and bought another one. Does anyone know the number of the fisherys there They might sell shad there and I am going down again next week. They were getting shad at cacade locks in the locks but would have to get an oregon license so be cheaper to by them. I saw 2 gillnet boats fishing shad there.
-
I will be fishing for shad and salmon at camas this week.
If anyone needs bait, holler at me thursday or friday, see what i got.
-
Fishincliff, I will be down that way on Friday. Yes I did see a tote of shad at the Fishery last weekend. The commercial guy said that he would be there again on Thursday evening. I do no have the number for the Fishery, but I will call another friend and see if he has it. Good luck to all!
-
We saw 2 gillnet boats come down and fish shad in the afternoon above the island if you get the number put it up I want to again next week.
