I'm reading through the regs and applying for all my tags and I read this about the second deer tag:
"You must purchase a second deer tag to participate in this hunt and the second tag can only be used in the permit hunt. The second tag must be the same weapon choice as your first tag. Your first and second deer tags can each be used to take a deer during this hunt. The first deer tag can be used during
the special hunt or the general deer season. You may hunt only with the hunting method in compliance with your tag."
I get that I have to buy a second tag and it has to be the same weapon. But I don't get the "your first and second tags can each be used to take deer during this hunt" and "the first deer tag can be used during the special hunt or during the general season".
Sounds like I can use my general tag during a special season if I have drawn a second tag that the dates are not the same as the general season. What if I draw a antlerless modern second tag for early october? Can I use my general tag during that time also? I wouldn't think so but it sure sounds that way to me??
Or are they just trying to say you can use the first tag you bought for the general season, in the special season, and the second tag you purchased after drawing the "second tag", in the general season? :dunno:

They made a correction to that note. Here it is:
Page 25
For the second deer category under the notes at the top, the notes should only include the following text:
Notes: You must purchase a second deer tag to participate in this hunt and the second tag can only be used in the permit hunt. The second tag must be the same weapon choice as your first tag.

Thanks. I hadn't read through the corrections yet. Had me totally confused for a minute..

So i can take 2 deer in that second deer tag season???
Your first and second deer tags can each be used to take a deer during this hunt. The first deer tag can be used during
the special hunt or the general deer season.
I thought your first tag could only be used for general or if you drew a special permit. ANd your second tag allowed you to hunt for a second deer for the time frame and unit you drew it in.
Probably having a mental moment today...

My understanding is that your primary deer tag (1st tag) is for the general deer season. You cannot use your 1st deer tag during the second deer season (if the 2nd deer season is at a different time). You have to abide by all general season rules for your 1st tag (i.e. 3 pt min, season dates, etc.)
If you are selected for a 2nd deer permit, and buy the 2nd deer tag $26 (you can only buy it if you are selected for the permit). Then you can take a deer with your 2nd deer tag for the permit area, season, and rules for the 2nd deer season, regardless of your 1st tag and the regular season.
The 2nd deer tag/season is completly independant of the general season (even though they may be at the same time). So if the 2nd deer season and the general season are at the same time, and the 2nd tag is for antlerless and the general is 3pt minimum, you can fill either tag first. You do not have to fill your regular tag prior to filling your 2nd permit tag.
Look at it as two different hunts, each has its own rules and regs, and they are completly independant of each other even though the dates may be the same.

from page 25 of the special permit 2nd deer tag area
Your first and second deer tags can each be used to take a deer during this hunt. The first deer tag can be used during the special hunt or the general deer season. You may hunt only with the hunting method in compliance with your tag.
Is this in the errata? no it's not...
so does this mean if I don't fill my general tag I can shoot 2 does in the 2nd deer special permit season?

jackelope, I don't understand what you mean ???
Did you go to this link: http://wdfw.wa.gov/wlm/game/hunter/huntregs2010_errata.pdf (http://wdfw.wa.gov/wlm/game/hunter/huntregs2010_errata.pdf)

no it does not, general tag is general ONLY, second tag is under second season ONLY
-
skinnyman has it right. look at them as two different hunts. just follow the rules of each hunt ie. dates, anterless vs 3 pt minimum, etc.

That's not what it says...it says your first deer tag can be used during the or the general season. Does that mean I can use my 1st and 2nd tag during the special season or just one of them? This is all assuming I draw the 2nd deer tag of course.

yeah I did and I don't see anything about it there...scratch that part of my post...
-
Yes that is what it says, i called Oly to make sure and they say it is a typo, the only time you can use the two tags in the same time frame is if the two seasons overlap, other than that they are independant of each other
-
Yes that is what it says, i called Oly to make sure and they say it is a typo
So that's not what it says then....if it's a typo...just saying.
-
so we just have typo's in our reg's?
thats another awesome feature...
-
you stole my reply jackelope :chuckle: that is the terminology they used when i called, i wonder how that would play out in court though :dunno:

??? You are supposed to ignore the note in the regulation pamphlet and only go by the revised note which is in the "errata."

teh wdfw and the regs books are both *censored*s :chuckle: (i learned a new name to call people yesterday, lol
). i have drawn numerous second tags and they always were/are independent from teh general tag. but what can you expect from the wdfw?

as usual...Bob knows everything.
*censored*.
:)

I believe it is Mr. *censored* :chuckle:

:chuckle: Thanks for all the responses fellas. The original regs make it confusing but the "errata" clears it up.. It sounded to good to be true anyways so I knew it had to be another WDFW mistake.

SO how do people that don't have the internet supposed to keep up with these changes? My best friend doesn't have internet access unless he goes to a library or someones house that does. How do those people keep up with misprints???
What happens when someone shoots 2 deer and they have the regs right there to show that they were within the letter of the written rule? Because there is no "errata" in the game regs?

I am pretty sure the first thing the Warden will say is "It is the Sportsman's responsibility to know the rules and the laws". Just like hunting near private land it is YOUR responsibility to know where YOU are.
-
They would probably cite the note on page 9 of the regulations:

Unfortunately, there is no valid excuse. Game and hunting laws change, and not necessarily on an annual basis. I suppose one without internet access could request a hard copy of the regulations with the errata at a WDFW regional office.
I think it is better that WDFW corrects an error rather than be forced to live with it until the next hunting season.

I understand it is the sportsmans responsibility. I just don't like the way they proof read a document that we live by in the field. How many people read that note and bought a second deer permit app. I almost did. But now i won't.
