Title: Guns you've regretted selling or trading.
Post by: wence5 on May 12, 2010, 01:38:23 PM
Thought this might be interesting, or could bring forth some strong emotions.  :'(

I'll start off. I bought a used Remington ADL with a Monte Carlo stock in .22-250. It was a beautiful rifle and a tack driver. Sold it (made a couple bucks on the sale) and bought a Ruger MKII in .223, because ammo was cheaper to shoot. As soon as the guy drove out of sight I knew I had made a mistake.   :bash:

So what say you?

WHen I was 16 I bought an old Husquavarna .270 and harvested several deer with it.  In 2002 I sold it so I could buy a new .270 Rem 700.  The Rem is a much better gun, but I loved that old rifle.  Lotta memories.  Should have kept it and found another way to come up with a couple of hundred bucks.

I LOVES my Remington 700 ADL with Monte Carlo stock'd .22-250 !!!  That's what I have to say !!  I've dropped MANY a caribou with that gun (when I lived in Alaska).  Mine's a shooter too... especially with the 6-24x40mm scope I have mounted on it.

I do wish I hadn't traded off my S&W model 629, 6" .44.  It was partial down payment on a Polaris snow mobile I'd acquired (as well as a Beretta 92F as down).  Don't really miss the 9mm, but I would enjoy having that 629 back again.  The snow mobile?  Well... a few years after moving back to Seattle... a buddy of mine in Alaska wanted to buy it... so, I sold/shipped it to him.  He took his little brother out when it arrived, and his little brother rolled it !  I kept that thing lookin'/runnin' SWEET too.  It was ALL "black" with red accents with aftermarket suspension/track... and was one rockin' little 400 Indy

Remington Model 1100 12 gauge skeet shotgun, S&W model 29 44 mag, and 1950's Winchester Model 94 30-30.  I sold them before I moved to Australia and now that I'm back, I have regretted it ever since.  Thank god I kept my Remington 700 ADL 30-06 at my parents house while I was away.

When I was in my 20's I sold off a Browning A5 Sweet 16 shotgun that I was given by my adopted granddad.  I shot my first duck with it on Hood Canal.

Always thought about the gun and really kicked myself for selling it, especially as it was at the insistance of the first wife when I really wasn't hunting much.

The only fortunate part was I sold it within the family.  Tried gettting it back from time to time but never could get it back.

Can't really recall what happened but I finally got it back a couple of years ago.  Traded a 12 gauge for it.  Sure am glad I was able to get it.

My first gun, a Savage over/under.  It was 20 ga. under and 22lr over.  My dad sold it to a neighbor so I could get a 20 gauge pump.  I tried for a long time to track the neighbor down but no such luck.  My dad regrets it as bad as I do but he didn't have the money at the time and I was only 12 so I didn't have any money either.  Hopefully some day I will find another.  I've seen one other but it was a basic model, mine had a pheasant scene engraved on one side and a coyote scene (not sure) on the other.  I killed a lot of birds with that gun and it was my first.

I had one of those in .223 and 20ga.  Loved the concept... but the particular one I bought (used) couldn't group any smaller than a paper plate (9") at 25yds (with the .223) !!  I traded it in on my .22-250

S&W 629Classic
Ruger sp101 .357
Glock 30 .45

Bought and sold a bunch of Rifles 1894's, L1A1's .22's And a few other handguns, I sometimes forget what I used to have.  Don't miss any of those but I'd love to have those 3 Hanguns back.  Don't think I'll ever sell another one.

A Winchester mod. 1200 in 20 gauge pump that my dad bought for me when I was 12 for working for him all summer.  Hunted a lot with it, frequently it would try to load 2 at a time from the magazine and jam.  Had a beautiful stock.  Regret selling it because of what it represented, not because it was a great gun.  Also had a single shot .22 Savage that was the same story.  Wouldn't always eject without the casing getting stuck, but it was one of those happy Christmas memories.

I have NEVER sold any of my guns....NEVER.
I have.  If I didn't, I'd have 3 or 4 THOUSAND firearms.  Not even MY understanding wife would understand that...... :)

But the one I regret?  A Savage M24V .357/20 gauge.  I cannot remember for the life of me why I traded it off, but I did.  I'd sure like another.

The one I wish I hadn't sold was a Winchester SS M70 Classic in 300 WSM.  Found it at a Walmart in AZ on sale for $499.  Ran in to some lean days and sold it for the same price.  It was a shooting machine. :bash:

H&K 91 sniper model and an H&K 94, I sure wish that I hadn't traded them but I got a several guns and a bunch of cash for them when the "assault weapons" ban went into effect.  Since then I have made a deal with myself to never get rid of or trade any gun.

Traded my .300 WBY MKV stainless to my best friend after I bought my Sako TRGS 7.82 Warbird. My Warbird shoots GREAT, but so did that WBY. It was the very best, most accurate weapon that I have ever owned. My friend and me almost always hunt together whenever either one of us hunts and it just kills me to have to look at that WBY in someone elses hands. I will NEVER trade a weapon again. NEVER!!! My wife shoots the exact same model WBY only it's chambered in .270 WBY mag. My friend never let's a chance go bye to try and "horse trade" me out of that .270. He just don't understand that it is NEVER going to happen.

Had bought a 70's vintage model Ruger 7mm from my Gramps for 100.00 .I could drive tacks with and it had the heavier barrel.Killin machine but it would kick my ass so bad.I was hurting for cash later and it really didnt have much sentimental value to it so I sold it.I kind of miss it now.Hard to find accuracy like that.

My first shotgun - 870 Wingmaster.  It was an old one that only held 2 3/4 inch shells and I sold it to buy my next shotgun when I was in college (bought a S&W 1100, sold that to buy a Beretta, sold that to buy a Benelli but only really regret that 870.)

ive traded and sold many many guns and really dont regret most of them. they were normally traded or sold to up grade or replaced as soon as the funds allowed. I did sell off a t/c renagade to fund builing a varmit rifle and I think it would have made an excellent elf rifle. I also sold a taurus .44 special w/ a 3" barrel and adj. sites that I kinda miss. Some of my biggest regrets are good deals that I passed over the years.

Dang, I could kick myself. I once had a beautiful little Winchester model 1400 20 GA semi-auto shotgun. It was a bear to clean but was so nice for upland birds. I sold it to buy a Mossberg over & under. What a mistake that was. I'm sure O/U shotguns are very nice and all and this was the cheapest O/U you could buy but I just didn't like it. Wish I still had the Winchester 20 GA.

2 that come too mind, first one being a Ruger 77 "200th year of american liberty" 250 SAVAGE, the other being a mint 99 savage, with the shell counter 358 win. Every time I think about the 250, I wanna puke.....  Also miss my old BAR 270 Wby Mag, not that I like BAR's, mostly cause it was a blood thirsty killin machine. Lotta good memories with that rifle.

I've let a few get away that afterwards I sorta regretted but none of them were rare or irreplaceable. I've never sold a hand medown or anything like that so I really don't have any regrets about selling any of them. Rifles are just inanimate objects, like tools. I use them or replace them.

Well I have a lot, the only 870 that worked I traded my first rifle for .303 Brit Savage that I took my first deer with, should not have done both. My 1911 Union Switch and Signal I got for $150 shot the crap out of it and sold for $300 now over $1K. My custom M1A1 I built from a NM barreled action to a great shooting auto that would take any ammo. And not but lease my Valmet O/U and single that I traded for a outboard motor, I won most of my class shoots with that shotgun. And after I sold it a matching set of O/U 30-06 barrels hit the street at a good price.

Sold 3 a little more than 25 yrs and been kickin my own ass ever since. H&R 12ga, 5 shot 22 marlin, and a old ruger 22 mark11. The ruger 22 is my biggest regret. It could knock the pubic hair off a nat at 25 paces :'(.  As of last year I finally filled the void and bought another one a Mark 111 target hunter which I really enjoy. But I still miss that old ruger and with 20/20 hindsight it will never happen again I guarantee it ;)

I'm not a big Taurus fan, but I worked the trigger of a Model 66 Nickle 6" 357mag some 25 years ago that I sold to a friend about 8 years ago. It is by far the most accurate revolver that I've ever fired. I'd put it up to my Kimber comp gun any day.

Miss that revolver. If I still had it, I'd be competing for my Distinguished Revolver Medal with it.

edit:
OK, maybe not the most accurate one I've ever fired. My Dan Wesson is damn accurate.  But that thing just fit my hand quite well and was a tack driver 'in' my hand.

Being a lefty has always resulted in challenges, especially with guns.  The few manufacturers who sold left hand models (weatherby excluded) offered few caliber options.  My elk hunting mentor carried a 338 Win Mag, and that thing accounted for more meals at our table than any other gun in the cabinet.  I used lever guns and finally got my first left hand bolt when I graduated from HS, but it wasn't the gun that I longed for.  Some years later I finally decided that I could afford a custom built dream elk gun.  I acquired a presentation grade left hand Savage 110 in 7 mag and sent it off to my gunsmith.  He re barreled it to 338 win mag and added a removable muzzle brake.  He fluted and bedded the barrel, and I had the whole thing plated.  I topped it with a new 3x9 Redfield Illuminator.  This was back in 1986, long before the craze for stainless guns and muzzle brakes.  I took several elk with it, and then became fed up with hunting in my home state of Oregon.  I decided I was done hunting and actually didn't go for several years.  I was trying to fund my then latest hobby of fly fishing and a trip to the Florida Keys for tarpon, so I sold the damn thing for half of what it cost me to have it built.  It didn't happen immediately, but there came a time that I began to regret it.  I think about that rifle often now and only hope it has gone on to many more adventures.  I'm looking to have another one built in my favorite 338 win mag caliber.   Probably on a 700 action this time.  As I get older, I agree with those that say caliber isn't nearly as important at learning to shoot well.  But there's just something about that 338 win mag that screams "Elk".

Side note on the removable muzzle brake, I used it once at the range and took it off.  That was $300.00 down the drain.  Those things are not for me.

When I was 21, my 69 Opel Cadet Rallye engine froze up and I sold it for to a neighbor (who rebuilt the engine and then drove it for years).  That summer I traded a Remington Model 742 Woodsmaster, Canadian Centennial Special Edition in .308 (that I had received from my Dad) to a friend for a Black 62 Chevy SS Impala with Red Interior.  I really got the better end of the deal, but when the tranny (Powerglide Slushbox) went out two years later I made the mistake of giving ithe 62 (Black Beauty) away for practically nothing.   My friend still has the .308 and has shot several elk and deer with it.  I have never gotten around to picking up another .308 and I really wish I still had the classic Impala muscle car!   >:(

i was going to sell this so i could get another lens for my camera.  It was a graduation gift from my father and after I pulled it out of the safe i realized how nice of rifle it is and I changed my mind.  glad i did.  its a M70 Winchester 338 Mag.
Your dad would have kicked your arse. I would have helped him.
