Great pics.
Makes my skin crawl though :yike:

Snake behavior is absolutely fascinating......... The big ones are always in the SAME place. The little ones are always in the same place. WEIRD
This got the ole' heart going. I know they aren't big western diamondbacks, but man. Guns were a blazing for a few. Needed a speed loader.

OK, so here I am standing on countless snakes this afternoon, and not really alarmed. I take this picture.

bare in mind, the aspect was basically straight up and down..........
I about fell over on this one, which in this case backwards would have been preferred over forwards.
they should make six shooters that shoot at least 10. :)

Pretty cool to see so many, great pic's DK. I haven't seen a rattler in this State since I was about 6-7 years old.

let the bull snakes eat the mice. kill them damn rattlers :mgun:
-
Closer to home.....getting too expensive to shoot them. Damn shot is 10 bucks a box (20 shells). Besides one errant pellet can put the hurt on a piece of camera glass. I did bust a few. Most of them I just stepped on or around. One time I was standing on about 100 1-2 footers, with about half of them buzzing. MAN thats creepy.

:yike: what kind of boots do you wear? i've had lots of run ins with rattlesnakes, but nothing this close... do they strike right away?
-
Bone- I think this is the only time that you'll have guys asking where you took these photos so they'll make sure NOT to go there. :chuckle:

I'm making my first trip to Potholes this July with the kids for a yote hunt, how prevalent are rattlers in that area? should we be looking for snake proof boots or gaiters?
-
while we're on this subject,.. what makes snakeproof shoes "snakeproof"? what kind of thickness can i snake bite through? how high up the leg? this whole snake thing really got me thinking, lol i've been around rattlesnakes alot, but i got into hunting less than a year ago, and never really had experience with them up close,...
-
In this particular area I wear my regualr hunting boots ALL LEATHER, I think that would be the important part. Remember their fangs are like sharp hypodermic needles. They are 12 inches high. I also wear snake chaps. I didn't for years, but had several close calls. I don't wear them other than when I am in the middle of these dens. They are almost vertical, and where they get you is when you crush them under a rock and rub the back of your leg in theri face. About the back of the knee. Watch your hands. Its precarious on shifting rocks with a camera lens and system in one hand and gear. I use a potatoe fork as a third arm or leg. Watch your hands! Not saying most of you climb around in snake pits. but I set my camera lens down, came back for it, checked before I picked it up and sure enough, one crawled up by it. Another I went to step down and almost put my foot on him directly. Thats how I got bit last time, right in the toe of my boot. They generally reach around and nail your foot, right about where those cool ventilated boots are letting that fresh air in. WEAR LEATHER! I'll get around to more pics.

We've had two documented fatalities locally in the last couple years. One was the one in Vantage, a rock hound, got bit in the neck. The other was a mountain biker, I believe in Cowiche canyon....snake flipped up in his lap and he died of DIC after being bit a couple agonizing days later.
-
I gently lift the rock off.

DIC = Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), also known as consumptive coagulopathy, is a pathological activation of coagulation (blood clotting) mechanisms that happens in response to a variety of diseases. DIC leads to the formation of small blood clots inside the blood vessels throughout the body.[1] As the small clots consume coagulation proteins and platelets, normal coagulation is disrupted and abnormal bleeding occurs from the skin (e.g. from sites where blood samples were taken), the digestive tract, the respiratory tract and surgical wounds. The small clots also disrupt normal blood flow to organs (such as the kidneys), which may malfunction as a result.[2]
DIC can occur acutely but also on a slower, chronic basis, depending on the underlying problem.[3] It is common in the critically ill, and may participate in the development of multiple organ failure, which may lead to death.[4]
-
Yep, essentially you start clotting and if you survive that (kinda hard on organs) you start bleeding from everywhere.
As a bloodbanker, I throw all sorts of products at you as fast as I can, but your chance of survival sucks. Its called the coagulation cascade as there are a ton of things that have to work in order for you to clot normally. The original Cascade failure. GENERALLY one of the biggest killers with snakebite. The toxin starts the Cascade failure, and you go into DIC. Even with anti-venom as by now, the venom has nothing to do with your death. It jsut started the cascade failure.
-
Hey Bone, how many times have your boots been bit :dunno: Mark
-
Couple times. Usually from stupidity, like trying to step on their head or something like that. This time of year, they mostly want to get away from you, unless you pinch them with a rock or something.
Every year I find snakes with their rattles cut off. I HATE that. So, I make sure their head is munched before or after I do any cutting.
Best way to stop a snake is to bust them in the midsection. They can't crawl that way. You shoot them in the head and if its hot, they have the ability to shoot off into their exit.
HOWEVER, this means their business end works just fine when you go to cut their tails off.
BY THE WAY, you go to cut their tails off, BEWARE, they often shoot pure ammonia at you through their anus. Its in a fan shape, so make sure you aren't angled at it. You don't want to be standing in a rockslide with a 1,000 rattlers blind, or worse, bent over puking if it gets in your mouth. Its NASTY.
-
Reminds me of my younger days, a find like that always called for the old deasel mix. Get a good burn going at the den and then a forked stick hunt for rattles, skins and meat from the ones that were fast enough to get away.
Shootmoore
-
Looks like you need some good snake recipes! Awesome pics. Your a braver man than me.
-
the hemo toxin in rattle snakes have more than just one protein strand designed to kill you
-
cooool pix. I have'nt seen those in the wild.
-
I stumbled over, possibly that den, once a long time ago... and was not ready for the number of rattles that I heard directly below me... My reaction was pretty dumb...I came off that talus slope at a skip and jump pace... somehow didn't get hurt... SURE glad I wasn't carrying anything expensive like a cam, gun or binos at the time!!!
I've long forgiven Doug for his rattlesnake vendetta... but I maintain there is a good reason they are out there...just like all the other critters in the woods... guess its the ecologist coming out in me.... :hello:
-
i've got that ammonia sprayed on my hands more then once while cutting of there rattles. :puke:
-
Cool pics!!! Thanks for posting them!!!!
-
Hands one thing, face another.......thats nasty stuff.
-

I THINK THIS HABBIT WILL GET ME HURT SOMETIME... LOL I EVEN GRABBED SEVERAL BIG RATTLERS BEFORE.....RIGHT AFTER A 25 POUND ROCK HITS THEIR HEAD

They are.

I strattled one there predatorpro. I had to seriously resist crushing him with my $800 fly rod. I did the same over by Lenice. That one I actually pinned its head down with it until I could get the tube off from around my head. That was hairy and fun all rolled into one.
-
One I almost stepped on last year as I was getting out of my truck....

Someday I hope to find one like that. I wanted to check out a den that has some 4 footers in it usually. Thats about max for rattlers in this state. Its interesting that they tend to be very aggressive too. I hope I get to it before they scatter. Not sure what they will do with this weather.
-
Don;t like those things. Told a friend about a place to hunt in montana and he had his story in this months hunting fool. We hunted all over that place and with the story he has a rattlesnake picture I had no idea they were around there. It was over by miles city. Ernie I hope those are wa. pictures not montana.
-
Hehehe....nahh...thems Montana Pics! (not the giant one...that is in TX or something??? I dont know)....
There are plenty in Miles City though!
-
:yike: The one in the last pic is a monster hornseeker. How long is he?
