Post by: Michelle_Nelson on February 21, 2008, 02:26:06 PM
I know I have seen this topic befor but. . . . I found 2 article in 2 different hunting magazines talking about using dogs.  I don't know the names of the magazines off the top of my head but I will post the names later tonight.   :)

Michelle, I wish you had not mentioned this.  We are sure the game dept. checks this site, and now all hell will break loose.
I know they are all huddled up in an office, with pens, paper, computers and calculators, just rubbing their hands together and jumping up and down.  now look for:

Canine shed hunting fee:  $50.00
Shed hunters punch card:  $25.00
Required  game dept issued canine collar and tag with the owners name and D.O.B, as well as the dogs name and D.O.B, plus religious preference of both dog and owner, plus make. model, and year of the vehicle used to tramsport said canine and owner:  $75.00
I just wish you had not mentioned it.

It gets BETTER

I just found a Press Release from WDFW. There is a new Reward Program for turning in people that suggest new animal aided tactics, even if they are eventually approved.

It's $75.00, Which will be $5 less than the cost Jerbear "discovered"

they'll always find a way to get'ya huh? :chuckle: :chuckle:

I was a kid I used to hang out at a little league park and one day a stray lab was following us around. We had a baseball and were playing catch and the ball ened up in the woods. While we were looking for it the dog followed and found an old baseball. Someone threw that old ball back in the woods and the dog came back with a newer one. We started to fake the dog out by pretending to throw the ball and within minutes he would come back with a ball. Pretty soon we had a half dozen balls and the dog was not falling for it anymore. So I would pretend to throw the ball while another kid was throwing rocks. The dog would hear the rocks and go look again. We ended up with a 5 gallon bucket full of baseballs which we sold to a coach for a quarter a piece. Never did see that dog again.

I think if you are willing to let your pup work over a few sheds as a treat (like cop dogs and ball or rags) you should be able to get one trained. Take a shed with you on your hunt and pretend to toss it in the woods for the dog to find and if there are any around it should find them.

Thats not the only can of worms she opened.  How about the fee or fine when you blast a 5K dog for running deer in the spring, then find out he was with his owner.

I could have used a dog yesterday. I could not find anything but a pile of dead deer that looked like they had been poached. Saw a lot of deer though and they all looked really good and fat. I also saw a Martin which I have never seen before. They are a very cool little animal.

A Martin...wow that is a treat.  Very secretive critters.  I was drooling over the weather and wishing I was out shedding, but decided to save the gas and enjoy the time with my family.  I picked up my daughter that doesn't live with us, and we flew kites, played soccer, shot bows and the new 410.  She enjoyed that.  I put one of those ground hog targets out there and my wife and her plinked away at it.  I have to remember that just because it is this nice in Yakima, there is still 4 feet of snow where I shed.  We thought about going out today, by Moses, but the wind and rain will keep us inside I think.  Maybe I'll get those taxes done, or another taxidermy project.

we just went to get out of the house. I have been cooped up for way to long. The good spots still have to much snow.

Illegal in the state of Washington for a common citizen to do euthanize a dog for running deer or other wildlife!
According to the game warden in our area the following procedures must be followed.
1. You make complaint
2. They investigate
3. Between the two of you identification of owner of dog is desired
4. Game warden needs to contact dog's owner if possible
5. If the problem persists then and only then can action be taken
6. Action can consist of the following but not limited to
    a. fine owner and have dog confined to kennel, chain etc.
    b. live trap dog, find home for dog, fine owner
    c. euthanize dog and fine owner

If the proper procedures are not followed the dog's owner has a legal case to sue you or the state for wrongful death of the dog.

my dog is so obsessive about things that i would be quite confident i could train him to find sheds. i almost want to say easily, but i won't cuz i know better than that. if i lived in an area where there was more shed hunting opportunities i would work harder at it.

Head-shot, I worked with a lady that owned that breed, but it Squiggy was considered inferior because she had some hair, it did have those ugly teeth though. Funny thing every AM I'd come in, sit down, look over my repair calls for the day and that ugly ass dog would crawl up in my lap and want me to pet it and such. Really a nice dog once you got over the teeth and the sparse hair. At first it gave me goose bumps!!!!

My dog is in Bird Training school and I asked the trainer about this. He said one guy came up to him at the sportsman show and wants him to train his dog how to hunt sheds. He said you just have to get a shed and get the dog used to bringing it back to you the reward him.

I worked with the border collie on this some and had a little success.  She's a freak about fetch and will play with anything i throw.  We had an antler in the toy box and get her playing with it then took her out to find some placed antlers around the yard.  She ended up finding a couple, but we found more than she did on horseback. It was nice having her grab them and give them to me on the horse.
I don't think she's going to make much of an antler dog...  :dunno:
