30-06 for me. I think it's the best overall hunting round for North America. Although if we were talking SHTF gun I'd say .308 b/c of the amount of govt ammo out there  for it.

:)for target work I would go 308 because that is a very popular target round and there are  lots of target quality rifles around and great target ammo.
For hunting I'd go 30/06 because the 06 with a 180 grain is a known deadly combination, the 06 shoots this load slightly faster than the 308.
neither has any real disadvantage.

i love my ot 6 i would recommend any hunter to get one. there the ideal gun and like said above with 180 grains it makes a deadly combination.

I’ll abstain; there really isn’t enough of a difference to worry about.

30-06 all the way

I voted 30-06, but it depends. If I wanted a short, light rifle, then I'd rather have the 308. But in a standard weight hunting rifle (around 7 lbs) i'd take the 30-06. I think with a lighter rifle, the 308 would be an advantage due to less recoil.

30-06 for hunting. The .308 is a good steady round for targets at a distance.

about 3-4" diffrance at 500 yards and 100-150 foot pounds muzzle-500 yards the 30-06 is a little better but i still like it better

Yes but I dont see how that makes any difference, niether of these cartridges should be used on game that far anyway.

Which is about 200-250 yards more than the average hunter should be worried about.

that's gonna start a fight.
should your 270 be used at those kind of ranges on game? if so, why?

308/3006 are great at 1000 yards its people who are the problem. :chuckle:

I voted .308.  I'm getting old and I think a lighter weight rifle would be more fun to pack around.......and a .308 would be easier to get in a light rifle and it would kick less than the 30-06.

With todays bullets like Barnes and Nosler E-tip, you can get away with lighter bullets than in the past.  A 130 gr barnes TSX would be good medicine out of the .308 for deer and probably elk..... :twocents:

30-06, every time, hands down.  If they would have sold it in a youth model rifle, PathfinderJR would have gotten a 30-06 for his birthday instead of a .308

not a fight but a lesson :chuckle: both of those guns still have well over 1000 foot pounds at that range more then enough to take a yote deer and elk. i could look it back up but i am sure the 308 was 1350ish and the 1500ish like said MOST hunters should not shoot that far BUT some are capable. and lets not start another thread about to far and this and that. i was pointing out a fact, that is all.

and a lesson for 270shooter here is a lesson from my ballistic software.
270win 150grain bullet at 500 yards is 53" low when zeroed at 200 and 930 foot pounds :P
30-06spring 150 grain bullet 45" low and 1235 foot pounds

A DIFFRENCE OF 8" and 305 foot pounds the 270 loses :P

but my 270wsm would kick the crap out of both and 95% of the guns out there as far as drop

It's not fair to compare same weight bullets in differing calibers. Try 130 grain .277 versus 150 grain 30 caliber. Plus 8 inches at 500 yards is very little difference anyway.

BTW, what is "bi-est." ???

opps hit the spell check and it switched it to that

and the 270 130 grain at 500 yards is same point of impact as a 30-06 with the 150 and still 200 foot pounds less

and bobcat that was in my first point like i said very little diffrence. that was my point

Ok I just have to do this.

A 150 gr sierra BTSP loaded by federal premium drops 43.7 inches at 500 yards when zeroed at about 1.5 inches high at 100 yards. Also it has 1268 ft-pounds of energy at 500 yards. Here is the link.
http://www.federalpremium.com/products/details/rifle.aspx?id=234 (http://www.federalpremium.com/products/details/rifle.aspx?id=234)

Now a more realistic thing to do is compare different bullet wieghts, 130gr in the 270 and 150gr in the 30-06.

The 270, shooting a 130 gr Barnes X bullet at 3060 fps is 38 inches low at 500 yards when zeroed at 1.5 inches high at 100 yards. Also this load has 1206 ft-pounds of energy at 500 yards. Here is the link for that one.
http://www.federalpremium.com/products/details/rifle.aspx?id=238 (http://www.federalpremium.com/products/details/rifle.aspx?id=238)

Now the 30-06 I used info for the 150 gr nosler ballistic tip (I didn't realize that there wasn't a 150 gr barnes X load, but they both are close in B.C. so it shouldn't really matter) It starts out at 2910 fps and drops 42.6 inches at 500 yards when zeroed 1.5 inches high at 100 yards. Also this load has 1243 ft-pounds of energy at that same distance. Here is that link.
http://www.federalpremium.com/products/details/rifle.aspx?id=265 (http://www.federalpremium.com/products/details/rifle.aspx?id=265)

So, the 270 is better, even if just slightly, you cannot say that the 30-06 is a flatter shooting cartridge because it is not. It has 40 pounds more energy but the deer isn't going to care. And as far as distance goes, I guess what I said at first was wrong, both of these cartridges are capable of killing animals at 500 yards, hell I shot a montana deer at 475 yards with a 140 gr accubond. But most people should be shooting that far.

I love my Winchester Model 70 .30-06.  I love my Remington 700 LTR .308.  I voted for .06, but I recommend both.

I would go with the .308 every time.  Unless you are shooting 180 gr. and bigger bullets, they are so close to equal it is not worth arguing about.  However, the .308 uses less powder, is lighter, and less recoil.

308 my dads into target shooting and collecting military style guns so I grew up shooting a hk91 and a steyer SSG.Was the natural choice and surplus amno is cheap for plinking.Hasn't let me down yet.Cant see much of an advantage to switching to another caliber.

308 for a target gun, 30.06 for hunting.  barely any difference, but if i give them specific duties i have better justification for buying them when the wife says no. 8)

it don't really matter. There the so close in ballistics. Its really a choice of do you want a short action or a long action rifle. I own both. The 308 goes hunting more than the 3006.
