ITs going to be a bleak year. The only mule deer I saw were DEAD ones. About a dozen or so. There are so many that the coyotes aren't even cleaning up the kills and neither are the Ravens. They are all hanging about with their bellies full. Then there was this fellow. Even down low there are a few whities down for the count. This guy was in about a foot of snow, in the wide open. Though about 250 yards from a cougar den, I don't think this is what caused his demise. No cat sign at all. He either just layed down and died or the wolf I saw got him. He was in the wide open and able to flee, I doubt the coyotes would have got him. Anyhow, he shed his antlers but will never have a chance to regrow them.

The deer are able to move about on the crust now, but the moose are breaking through. Now its their turn to struggle. Sorry, no moose pics. I was trying to give them their space. They were having a hard enough time.

He ahd pretty nice pedicles, but his hoof size wasn't that big, and he didn't appear to be that old.

That's a really bad sign.......if the strongest members of the herd are dropping so much for all the fawns and weaker deer........

By the way, this was a whitetail for those of you who can't tell, or for those of you linking my mulie conversation. Its about 50-50 what I saw for live deer versus dead deer, and its real early. For those of you that know winterkill, when the cheat comes out is when they really start dieing in March. DEVASTATING! It is way too early to be seeing this man dead animals.

I tried to bypass as many as possible. For the most part they just stood and watched, and let me pass. Whitetails are ususally falgging and frightful this time of year.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Fbonesbucks%2Fwhitewint.jpg&hash=7171eed327b90c54b9ed26f6d251b7741dd27f15)

Thanks for the report :hello:
-
Funny thing i saw some snow shoe tracks yesterday while shed hunting
-
I saw a few myself that wen't mine. :)
-
Acually I was in mule deer country I only saw one set and they were a couple weeks old
-
Wow....over a dozen in one outting already....way too many!! That sucks!
-
Bone why do you have to depress me. I am going to my spot tomorrow and I am afraid of finding the same thing. That is a horrible thing to see and from what I here if we have a cold rainy spring those deer that are still alive will not have a prayer.
-
Bone, please tell me that isn't near my neck of the woods! I havent talked with my buddy over there in a couple of weeks so I don't know if he has run across the same thing. I know that the deer started pushing his horses and cows off of their hay a couple of months ago. He started placing alfalfa on the other side of the fence to keep the deer away from the livestock. The last time that I was chatting with him he was feeding close to 60 deer at his place and 30-40 over at mine. I noticed when I was over there in October that there were a lot of really small (late) fawns. This kind of weather is tough for those little boogers to survive. I sure hope that it dosent turn out like the winter of 96-97, but it starting to look that way. Damn, just when the herds were doing great. :(
-
Yep, your neck of the woods. You are sharing it with lone wolf too. That ought to excite you. Damn big coyotes anyway. ;) I guess the wolves have been there for a bit, but this guy was further out than normal. Probably a young male that was kicked out.
-
Damn, damn, damn! I bet that is the same wolf that was running around my treestand area. My buddy shot a cougar over there last month just up behind his place. Crap! Now I want to head over there and check out the situation. I'll have to give my buddy a call at lunch time and see what is going on.

Thank for the update, hopefully what you saw is not a preview of what is to come..Wish I could send some of the westside weather over for the winter
